MLS and the Western European schedule
I don't realistically think COVID-19 will be over by this August, but if it nibbles away at the 2021 season, why not switch to a fall-to-spring schedule?

2021-22 Season:
July 2-25 CONCACAF Gold Cup/Preseason
July 30-August 1 Preseason Match
August 6-8 Regular Season Begins (Week 1)
August 10-12 Leagues Cup Round of 16
August 13-15 Week 2
August 17-19 Leagues Cup Quarterfinals
August 20-22 Week 3
August 24-25 Week 4 (Midweek)
August 30-September 7 FIFA International Window
September 10-12 Week 5
September 14-16 Leagues Cup Semifinals
September 17-19 Week 6
September 21-22 Leagues Cup Final
September 24-26 Week 7
September 28-30 Week 8 (Midweek)
October 4-12 FIFA International Window
October 15-17 Week 9
October 19-21 Week 10 (Midweek)
October 22-24 Week 11
October 26-28 Week 12 (Midweek)
October 29-31 Week 13
November 2-4 Week 14 (Midweek)
November 8-16 FIFA International Window
November 19-21 Week 15
November 26-28 Week 16
December 3-5 Week 17
December 10-12 Week 18
December 17-19 Week 19
December 30 MLS All Star Game
January 7-9 Week 20
January 14-16 Week 21
January 21-23 Week 22
January 28-30 Week 23
February 4-5 Week 24
February 11-13 Week 25
February 15-17 CONCACAF Champions League Round 1 Leg 1
February 18-20 Week 26
February 22-24 CONCACAF Champions League Round 1 Leg 2
February 25-27 Week 27
March 4-6 Week 28
March 8-10 CONCACAF Champions League Round 2 Leg 1
March 11-13 Week 29
March 15-17 CONCACAF Champions League Round 2 Leg 2
March 21-29 FIFA International Window
April 1-3 Week 30
April 5-7 CONCACAF Champions League Round 3 Leg 1
April 8-10 Week 31
April 12-14 CONCACAF Champions League Round 3 Leg 2
April 15-17 Week 32
April 19-21 Week 33 (Midweek)
April 24 Week 34 (Decision Day)
April 26-28 CONCACAF Champions League Final Leg 1
April 30-May 1 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs (Conference Quarters)
May 3-5 CONCACAF Champions League Final Leg 2
May 8-10 MLS Cup Playoffs (Conference Semis)
May 15 MLS Cup Playoffs (Conference Finals)
May 22 MLS Cup Playoffs (Final)
May 30-June 14 International Window

Unfortunately the varying dates for the Gold Cup mess with the US Open Cup. Ideally you'd have it in July as part of the preseason, with all 27 US MLS teams entering in the Round of 64, and play it over 3-4 weeks. MLS teams could then schedule preseason matches against each other as they are eliminated. Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver would do the same for the Canadian Championship, except they would enter in the quarterfinals, with 5 Canadian Premier League or other teams having advanced from earlier rounds.

RE: MLS and the Western European schedule
No time like the present.

Especially if this whole merger with Liga MX goes forward. Scrap the current structure and just begin a new season in the Fall.
