I believe it was distributed based on number of students receiving financial aid

that explains trade schools and community colleges but why does a place like Harvard need any assistance..

Because they have students there on aide or scholarships but, to their credit, Harvard declined the money.

RE: Stimulus Package $$$ for Universities
Harvard has accepted $9M of funding from the CARES fund and will put it all towards student financial aid.

Still raises the question should any private organizations with billions of available funds take aid at this time. It's not a good look.

Companies are drawing on their revolvers, and individuals are dipping into savings.

Trump had some pretty harsh words yesterday for Harvard and said he expects them to pay that money back.

This isn't just about Harvard. Over 100 universities have $1B+ endowments.

https://thebestschools.org/features/rich...-research/

Most "flagship" universities are on this list.

Texas is receiving $31M with a $30B endowment.

Penn St. $55M, $4B

Ohio St. $43M, $5B

Texas A&M $40M, 14B

https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2020...l-stimulus

$14B of stimulus, probably 25%+ going to schools with more than enough funds to weather the storm.

It would be great for the super rich schools to give that back, and I do think it's ridiculous for them to keep it, but there should have been measures to keep the money from going to these schools in the bill.

Why do those in academia that preach about corruption in America have to be shamed to do the right thing. Hypocrisy level - Doc Holiday.

Even Doc Holliday admitted that his hypocricy has its limits.

Not sure they would.

just one of the things that the democrat controlled house put in there and stuck their guns on. a good idea at first glance because was intended to help them defray moneys used to assist low income students. the problem is the rich so-called all caring universities should just use some of their big piles of cash to help those students because this way it ends up being funds from currently hard pressed taxpayers. IMHO

I thought Harvard didn't charge tuition for accepted students whose families make less than $75k per year.

This. No one expects rich Americans or corporations to voluntarily give up tax breaks. It would be very nice for wealthy schools to help out even a portion of what they're capable of, but it's hilarious how we're now acting like they're supposed to ignore that they're impacted financially, too.

With that said, I'm glad some schools are starting to turn it down. It's just a shame that the image management had to be a reaction to so much self-righteousness.

Maybe it starts because they are already tax exempt?

Oh, I'm sure that impacts a lot of folks' views. Our entire tax system is based on playing a big accounting and liability subgame within an even bigger financial game, though, so I still find it funny to point to accepting any of the rules of the game as the thing that's finally going "too far."
