Notre Dame needs to furlough their head football coach. In fact they could just fire him and that will save more money for a little while.

In all seriousness, this is a consequence of our current financial climate. I work in higher ed and I know that this is a possibility. Hope people have enough savings and pray for the best.

im not even sure why they bothered with this. Its a 7 to 10 day furlough. I cant imagine that will make much of a difference to the schools budget.

Aren’t the bulk of coaching salaries paid from donations?

"Furlough" in this case means giving up two weeks of pay for those making $150,000 or more. Employees that make less than $150,000 will have fewer lost days of pay.

Quote:The highest-paid employees, those who make more than $150,000 a year, will take 10 furlough days. The lowest paid full-time employees (40,000-$74,999) will take four furlough days. Those making $100,000-$149,999 will take seven furlough days and those making $75,000-$99,999 will have five.

Well, there is the symbolic value. It would look bad if regular faculty and staff were getting pay cuts and the football coach was getting off scot-free.

Also, if the coach makes $1 million, then two week's pay is about $40,000. That's not a trivial sum.

From my point of view a 10% pay cut would have been more substantial from a bugetary point of view (which a number of other schools have done) and would have looked much less dire than a "Boise is Furloughing Its Entire Football Staff" headline where you dont read the details (and you know many wont read the details).

My guess is the coaches pitched this ILO a pay cut, a pay cut could last the duration of the existing contract while a furlough is limited to this year. A for creativity.

Not all schools are similarly impacted, and no school wants to cut any more than they have to. So if Boise is only cutting two-weeks pay and not 10%, then that means they think that's all that is needed, at least for now.

I recently left it, and agree. Regular faculty at the big schools will be fine. If you're not one of those, hope you've done some saving. I'm especially worried for the adjuncts and post-doc's/research assistants.
