Minor leagues and MLB
IMO, not completely surprising given that MLB always had the leverage of being able to choose how many players they supply to minor league affiliates.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/...-in-teams/
Quote:When MLB and MiLB negotiators convene on a teleconference on Wednesday, multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations say MiLB will indicate that it agrees to 120 affiliated teams in a new PBA.

Such a concession by MiLB could be a clear step toward a deal. MiLB has now agreed to find ways to come to agreement on almost all of MLB’s public demands. Now the open question is whether MLB will be willing to accept the concession as a foundation for a potential deal.
Quote:Now MiLB is expected to signal its assent to a system going forward where each MLB team will have four full-season affiliates, plus one Rookie-level team at its spring training complex. Such a move fulfills the largest remaining demand MLB has requested in these negotiations. MLB teams have looked to reduce the number of affiliates each team has. MLB had already reached agreement last month with the Major League Baseball Players Association to cut the number of rounds in the 2020 and 2021 drafts, which will almost assuredly cut the number of players MLB teams sign each year.

Question RE: Minor leagues agree in principle to MLB plan to reduce affiliated minor league teams
Not sure if I've seen this posted, so here it is...

it would mean as many as 42 current minor league teams would be lopped off by eliminating short-season and Rookie ball. Two independent league teams, the St. Paul Saints and Sugar Land Skeeters, would be added to affiliated ball.

Now MiLB is expected to signal its assent to a system going forward where each MLB team will have four full-season affiliates, plus one Rookie-level team at its spring training complex. Such a move fulfills the largest remaining demand MLB has requested in these negotiations. MLB teams have looked to reduce the number of affiliates each team has. MLB had already reached agreement last month with the MLB Players Association to cut the number of rounds in the 2020 and 2021 drafts, which will almost assuredly cut the number of players MLB teams sign each year.

Here are the 42 teams ticketed to be removed from the affiliated minor leagues in Major League Baseball’s proposal. This list is highly preliminary, and Baseball America had heard rumors of other teams being on the list earlier in the process. To read more about MLB's proposal to eliminate teams, click here.

RE: Minor leagues agree in principle to MLB plan to reduce affiliated minor
I wonder who all is moving to AA?

I figure Fresno, currently in the AAA Pacific Coast League, should move down to the Class A California League to replace Lancaster, and both Sugar Land and St. Paul, currently independent, should join the PCL (AAA), which will likely split into two.

PCL: Tacoma, Sacramento, Reno, Las Vegas, Salt Lake, Albuqerque, El Paso, San Antonio, Round Rock, Sugar Land

New AAA League: Oklahoma City, Wichita, Omaha, Iowa, Saint Paul, Memphis, Louisville, Indianapolis, Toledo, Columbus

IL: Nashville, Gwinnett, Durham, Charlotte, Norfolk, Buffalo, Syracuse, Lehigh Valley, Scranton-WB, Worcester

The Southern League is due to lose two - it seems like Rome (GA) and Augusta (who actually plays in North Augusta, SC) are really the only two South Atlantic League teams in the current footprint. Bowling Green would make sense, but I don't see another Midwest League team coming with them.

I would expect the Eastern League to take Wilmington (DE) and Fredericksburg as they would be the northernmost remaining teams in the Carolina League

TL: Arkansas, NW Arkansas, Springfield (MO), Tulsa, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Midland, Frisco

SL: Tennessee, Rocket City, Birmingham, Rome, Augusta, Montgomery, Mississippi, Pensacola, Biloxi, Jacksonville

EL: Bowie, Richmond (VA), Fredericksburg, Akron, Altoona, Harrisburg, Wilmigton (DE), Reading, Trenton, Portland (ME), New Hampshire, Hartford

RE: Minor leagues agree in principle to MLB plan to reduce affiliated minor league teams
When this proposal was first leaked a few months ago, it was reported back then that a Saint Paul franchise would replace Fresno with Fresno moving to the A California League, and that another team (possibly Round Rock) would move to AA so that a AAA team (presumably the Astros AAA affiliate) could be in Sugar Land.

MLB wants to cut minor league travel and eliminate the shuffling of MiLB teams that sometimes leaves MLB teams stuck with a AAA team on the other side of the country (last year the Nationals' AAA team was in Fresno), so it's possible the PCL could be an 8-team league with the AAA teams of the 8 MLB clubs in the west. If that happened, it's likely that Oklahoma City, which is not just an affiliate but is also owned by the LA Dodgers, would be in the PCL.

RE: Minor leagues agree in principle to MLB plan to reduce affiliated minor league teams
It's always seemed strange that Memphis was in the Pacific Coast League. The travel to play the teams in the far west is brutal even though the PCL used an unbalanced schedule where only 30 of the 140 games were against teams in the other conference, that is the far west. I had heard some talk, that's probably all it was, that the American Association may reform after it disbanded after the 1997 season. It would include Round Rock, San Antonio, OKC, Wichita, Omaha, Iowa (Des Moines), Memphis and Nashville. That's 8 Central time zone teams. Two old American Association teams, Louisville and Indianapolis would come back in giving us 3, 10 team Triple A leagues, all pretty much geographically footprinted equally. Sugarland would become Double A and fall right into the Texas League while St Paul would align perfectly with the Class A Midwest League.

RE: Minor leagues agree in principle to MLB plan to reduce affiliated minor league teams
7 months after my last post there's some info leaking out now about the MILB realignment. Fresno is being downgraded from AAA to A. Somebody owes that owner a lot of lost franchise value. Wichita (one non playing year in AAA) and San Antonio (two years in AAA) are being reassigned to AA. Two independent league teams, St Paul and Houston suburb Sugarland are moving up to AAA. They must have great facilities. The Astros have already signed for Sugarland to be their AAA team replacing Round Rock. Round Rock is angling to get the Rangers AAA affiliate from Nashville. The Brewers AAA affiliate would be available for Nashville (from San Antonio) but this could get interesting since Nashville basically kicked out the Brewers, who wanted to stay there, four seasons ago. The Marlins AAA affiliate from the one non playing season in Wichita, is heading to Jacksonville, moving up from the AA Southern League. Since travel costs and saving money is a primary concern for this realignment, I hope a new centrally located AAA league will form that includes Memphis and Nashville. If not, then I hope Memphis (my home) and Nashville (200 miles up the road) can join the IL. The PCL is just too spread out going from Tacoma to Reno to Sugarland (Houston) to St Paul. That's some seriously expensive travel. I've read they hope to have all this finalized within a month. We can only hope.

I called Sugar Land home for about 15 years. It is wild that there's a AAA baseball team there now.

Today is the day and MiLB is taking a much different shape officially.

MILB is updating things as they become available.

All but about 5 have their AAA team within easy driving distance. A bunch have the AAA team in the same metro (to name 4 off the top of my head--Houston-Sugar Land, Seattle-Tacoma, Atlanta-Gwinnett, Minnesota-St. Paul)

And probably a good strategy to tie outlying areas to the major league team to have their affiliates in the same general area--for the vast majority of teams.

RE: Minor leagues agree in principle to MLB plan to reduce affiliated minor league teams
Looks like MLB got what it wanted. Now that MLB has control over which teams play in MiLB and at which level, an MLB club holds over the head of each of its affiliate team owners the potential threat of moving to a new affiliate in a new location and dropping the current minor league team to a lower level or into the ranks of unaffiliated teams.

Say the Marlins decide in a few years that Jacksonville ought to upgrade its training facilities, build a weight room, dining room, new practice fields, better lighting for the ballpark, whatever, for the Marlins AAA team. In the past, the AAA owner could just wait until the contract with the Marlins runs out and become the AAA affiliate of another MLB club. But now, if the AAA owner doesn't want to pay for that, the Marlins can go to their low-A team in Jupiter, Florida, persuade that owner to make those upgrades in Jupiter, and then move Jupiter to AAA while dropping Jacksonville to low-A. Faced with that scenario, the Jacksonville owner will ante up for those improvements.

RE: Minor leagues agree in principle to MLB plan to reduce affiliated minor league teams
The state of Alabama maintained all 3 of their minor league teams. All are AA clubs and in the Southern League.

Birmingham Barons, Montgomery, Biscuits, and the illustrious Rocket City Trash Pandas.

Not that long ago, Mobile had a team in the same league, but it was bought and moved to Hunstville/Madison within the last couple of years. At one point, all 4 cities had a team in the same league. Kind of a shame that Mobile doesn't have one anymore as they used to play in Hank Aaron Stadium(still a team in nearby Pensacola, however). Yes, Hank Aaron is from Mobile. Willie Mays is also from Alabama although he's from Fairfield(near Birmingham).

They've lost Jacksonville though and the team in Jackson, TN was apparently not invited to join an organization.

Through the years I always tried to see a Mobile Bay Bears game when we vacationed in Dauphin Island. Hank Aaron stadium was a nice facility. Close to Mobile is also the Biloxi Shuckers that moved from (oddly enough) Huntsville a few years back. Now Huntsville took Mobile's team. Kind of a Southern League 'whack-a-mole' game. Tennessee used to have 4 Southern League teams for many years before Memphis and Nashville went AAA in the 80's and 90's leaving Knoxville and Chattanooga in AA. The team in Jackson Tenn that got contracted was the old Memphis AA team that moved there when Memphis went AAA in 1998.

This is the list of the 120 MLB-affiliated minor league teams for 2021, along with their assigned leagues.

The MLB office has not yet decided whether to keep "traditional" league names for these minor leagues.

I went to a Biscuits game a few years back.

They launch hot dogs into the stand and then they launch biscuits into the stands. It's amazing.

I guess if MLB expands, they'll add another AAA team to the Midwest and Southeast divisions (thinking Wichita and Birmingham/Orlando/New Orleans), and split AAA into 3 or 4 conferences/leagues. AA affiliates would have plenty of recently departed markets to choose from for the "Southern League" or "Eastern League".
