Not exactly. He said if college football isn't played, the rest of the fall sports would follow suit.
Quote:“If there’s no college football this fall, there’s very little likelihood there will be any other sports because 85% of revenue derived in college athletics comes from the sport of football,” MWC commissioner Craig Thompson said in a video released by the league on Monday.
It's sobering that he's thinking in those terms because it confirms that losing football is a distinct possibility, but this isn't really news because there's no way they'd play soccer or volleyball if football was cancelled and/or campuses were closed; that's just logical.

Well I think that's clear. You cancel one fall sport, you cancel all.

You might think PAC 12, Big Sky, Big West, WCC, WAC, D2, D3 and NAIA as well if the whole west coast is in a lockdown.

Listen to what he says: 85% of revenue at MWC schools is derived from FB.
That number is probably above 90% in the MAC/CUSA/SBC.

UConn’s President is saying no fall sports, then again UConn has not had a football team since 2010.

BREAKING: UConn Pres. Tom Katsouleas says that fall sports will likely be cancelled.
"Current thinking is that likely fall sports will be cancelled - with the exception of those that can be played at a safe distance”.

Also, not every team has to play this season. Schools can take this season off and restart in 2021 if possible.

There are athletic departments out there that can’t go a year without football revenue. This is going to hit the G5 and FCS really hard. I wouldn’t be surprised if we never see some programs field a team again.

There won't be any more football this year. We've already seen the only 10 games that will be played in 2020.
Just get used to the idea, and move on.

The data that the schools send to the federal government says that football revenue is quite a bit less than 85%.
If you look at those numbers reported to the feds, and even if you include all revenue and expenses "not allocated by gender/sport" as football revenue and expenses, football is 60% of reported revenue at the highest-revenue program in the MWC, San Diego State. Football is also about 60% of reported expenses for the entire SDSU athletic department. At Boise State, which probably relies more on football than any other MWC athletic department, football plus all revenue "not allocated by gender/sport" is 74% of reported revenue and 64% of reported expenses.
This data is from the federal database posted at: https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/
The largest problem any of these athletic departments will have is that they are losing nearly all of their revenue without losing similar amounts of expenses. Without playing the sports, they will save travel costs and the costs of operating venues on game days and practice days, but the bulk of expenses are salaries and benefits, and those can't be eliminated unless they stop paying employees altogether.

Right. They need to finish a basketball season before we can move to football.
Ain't gonna be any more basketball in 2020 either.

I think you're right - we're not going to be seeing much of anything. The MWC is merely stating what all the other conferences and the NCAA is already thinking.

If CSNbbs is going to come out ahead of this crisis, it needs to reinvent itself. A good start would be a DavidSt YouTube channel.

Can you imagine a bracket style tournament on his predictions to move up to DI or to close? The madness of that tournament! [Actually it could be pretty fun to watch us hash out who we think is in the best position.]
I think that we might be reading more into Thompson's comments. If there is no football, then all sports would be cancelled. The question is if classes are happening in the classroom, but still no football. That would be very interesting.

If football cant be played nothing in the fall will be played.
I'd even argue most schools would wait until 2021 to start things back up since most places dont make enough on mens bball to justify opening all winter and spring sports.
