Stars/Heisman contenders
One of the things that I think would represent the next step forward in the FBS world would be real national recognition for some players in our conference. I dont believe there has ever been a true Heisman contender in this conference. But it can be done.
Look at other G5 programs. Boise State had Kellen Moore as a finalist for the Heisman in 2010. Marshall had Randy Moss in 1997 and Chad Pennington in 1999.
I'll need help on this: how many first round draft picks have emerged from the Sun Belt? I'm not aware of any in recent years, but I'm no historian.
I think that standout stars is one of the things that separates the Sun Belt, and App State specifically, from garnering the respect that the UCF's, Boises, and Marshall's have gotten over the years.
One other thing: any predictions on who could become a true national star on current rosters?

RE: Stars/Heisman contenders
You would be an Edwards type QB from App St to maybe just maybe pull it off. That players would need to lead the team to multiple top 25 finishes and wins over big time P5 programs, like Boise St used to do. Then their senior year they would need to be undefeated and maybe a top 10-12 team. This player would have to be well known and talked about prior to their senior season and then cap it off in dramatic fashion.

Since the Sun Belt started in 2001, there have been 65 total NFL draft picks, but only two were first round draft picks:
2005 - Demarcus Ware (Troy) - 11th overall pick
2008 - Leodis McKelvin (Troy) - 11th overall pick
Neither of them were considered Heisman candidates in college. The Sun Belt has never had any real Heisman candidates. A G5 team has to likely go undefeated to have a player be considered a Heisman candidate, just like Boise State, Marshall, and UCF did.

Watch list, yes. In the final group, no.
