Sun Belt Former FCS teams
Which team (any year) would you make a case for taking the SBC title. (It has to be an FCS level year)
For TXST I'd have to go with the 2005 team.
Want to see what other TXST people have to say and what other schools' get listed.

You're not the only team that was never FCS. It's just a time passer. Go with it.

I would say 1985 Indians but gnats . . . our best team was 1975 but that was D1 11-0 and no place to go spawned the Independence Bowl.

GSU did play 3 years in FCS although they were a startup and not very competitive. Two years independent and one in the CAA.
For App, I would have to say an argument could be made for either the 2006 or 2007 teams. In terms of talent, I would say 2007 but we had injury issues that year with Armanti Edwards missing a few games. That resulted in losses to Wofford and Georgia Southern (recognize the familiar theme?). Armanti did play against GS but it was his first game back and it took a half for him to get his rhythm back, which was all GS needed. It was a painful loss in that it also ended a home winning streak that went back to 2003. The 2006 team only had one loss at NC State (23-10) in the season opener. We had not yet "discovered" Armanti's magic so Trey Elder was our QB.

The obvious answer is the 1987 national championship team

The Sun Belt didn’t begin playing football as a league until 2001.
I remember North Texas had a stranglehold on the the conference the first 4 years.

I can think of at least 6, one of which would have run roughshod through the G5 more than likely as well with several others putting up a good fight. I'd also add the 98/01 teams that fell short in the playoffs but were still extremely good teams to compete extremely well against the G5.
I'd put our 02/04/07/11/12/13 teams in the mix for the conference as well.

I think he seems they were so bad at first they couldn’t compete at the FCS level much less SBC.

Louisiana is the only team that never played FCS. As already mentioned, Ga. State played a year as a CAA football member, and South Alabama did play as an FCS independent that was fully intent on joining the SB for football.

The 2006 App State team, according to Corey Lynch, who was a member of the '05/'06/'07 FCS championship teams, was the best of the three. He said the '06 team would beat the '07 team that beat Michigan.
So my vote goes for the 2006 App State team as the best shot at winning the SB championship.
This exercise leaves some questions: Are we eliminating the modern day version of our own school as a contender for the Sun Belt against the past FCS version of out school? In other words, would '06 App State have to face off against '18 or '19 App? Because if so, the oast two Apo State teams would easily beat any former FCS team of App.

Don’t bet the farm against an Armanti led team.

Armanti = Best player in App State history
2019 Appalachian = Best team in App State history

Sure, I agree. But you did say easily beat and I’m not certain of that.

Yeah, I'm definitely all about folks sharing in this thread. I just...have a hard time remembering much about our FCS years...or those first couple in the Belt...

I think you’d have to put the ‘06 defense with the ‘07 offense to give it a good chance to compete with our teams from the last couple of years.

1993 Troy State Trojans.
Went undefeated in the regular season, finishing #1.
We beat UCF, Western Kentucky, UAB during the season... beat Stephen F. Austin and McNeese State in the playoffs, making it to the semifinals... only to lose close to a great Marshall, 21-24.

Most of my tailgating group is like that.
I was a die-hard for 7 FCS seasons though.
