Iranian Ship Violates Social Distancing…Comes Too Close To Coast Guard Ship…
Quote:WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) – Eleven vessels from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) came dangerously close to U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships in the Gulf, the U.S. military said on Wednesday, calling the moves “dangerous and provocative.”

While such interactions had occurred occasionally a few years ago, they had stopped in recent years, and this incident comes at a time of increased tensions between the two countries.

According to the statement, the Iranian vessels approached six U.S. military ships while they were conducting integration operations with Army helicopters in international waters.

At one point, the Iranian vessels came within 10 yards of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Maui.

The U.S. ships issued several warnings through bridge-to-bridge radio, blasts from the ships’ horns and long-range acoustic noise maker devices.

The Iranian ships left after about an hour, the statement added.

There was no mention of the incident in Iranian media.

“The IRGCN’s dangerous and provocative actions increased the risk of miscalculation and collision, (and) were not in accordance with the internationally recognized Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea,” the U.S. military’s statement said.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, asked in a Fox News interview whether he had discussed the incident with the Pentagon, said: “We’ve talked as a team. … We’re evaluating how best to respond and how best to communicate our displeasure with what … took place.”

Maritime security sources said on Wednesday that a Hong Kong-flagged tanker was briefly detained in Iran after armed Iranian guards in speedboats directed the vessel into its waters while it was sailing through the Gulf of Oman.

The sources said the SC Taipei chemical tanker had been sailing in international waters on Tuesday when it was stopped.

Im glad cooler heads prevailed here but at some point we can't allow small craft that close to our vessels. Remember the Cole.
A warning should be clearly given to the Iranians that we will fire upon any craft that breaches a zone of safety. This is a dangerous game of chicken the Iranians are playing.

Iranian Ship Violates Social Distancing…Comes Too Close To Coast Guard Ship…
Saw some video on this, they look like maybe 26-32 ft speedboats with a single gun mounted up front. I’d think the smallest, most poorly armed vessel in the US group could take out all eleven of them in short order.

No idea what they think they’re accomplishing here

Those Iranian Navy boats looks just a tad nicer than the Somali pirate boats you see lol.

They are absolute clowns no doubt about it. No point in what they did whatsoever.

Coast Guard deploys oversees all the time. They are better suited for shallow water protection duties than the blue water Navy

And when one does, blow it out of the water. They will keep testing us until we do that. And the more we back down, the more aggressive they become.

I was always a fan of using Willie Pete to set the water on fire.

This is the way I see it, unless those Iranian boats shoot at our ships then keep your cool. The Iranians are waiting for us to do that and use the excuse that they we shot first, that's why they had more than one boat available. The only thing that is dangerous is a collusion. If that happened then the Navy has the prerogative of maintaining distance with fire power.

But, I agree, the Iranians are playing a stupid game and they would lose. Harsh words are needed in response and a clear message of what will happen if they persist. A strongly worded WARNING.

But we have to back up that warning with ACTION. That's what we've never done. I think it is time for "warheads on foreheads."

That's true.

Did you know you must be at least 6 feet tall to serve in the Coast Guard?

That's so you can walk in to shore.

03-zzz That joke is as stale as the one about crayon eating Marines. If I had to do it over again I would have absolutely picked the Coast Guard Academy over USNA.

I didn't know this. I just assumed they only patrolled US waters.

Honest ???, and I asked this prior,

Test for what? If we can kick their asss, or if we will?
What do you think the game is here?

Martyrdom on the intl stage for some dumb*** rallying thing? So they can call us devils again?

It can’t possibly be military, this would make desert storm look like a drawn out engagement.
Truly baffling, but I guess nothing new.

Obama tried this approach with his "line in the sand" BS. But he did not have the balls to back it up. It is like parenting, if you make the threat, you damned well better back it up when the behavior continues, or else you lose all credibility.
