Ummmm, no.

Zero chance,

You add in the international guys to the mix to take spots and then look at who goes undrafted every year, Players who are far, far better than Lewis, he’s got no chance of getting drafted.

I like 'ol Matt and really hope he returns for his senior year.
Still though, can't help but think he needs to show FG shooting improvement that would make him a 1st team All-CAA player before entertaining thoughts of being drafted. It's only two rounds-he's not a top 60 player. Maybe he's just trying to get feedback on what he needs to work on.

Not trying to be mean, but he's got zero chance of ever playing in the NBA. Grant Riller, by contrast, does. There's night and day difference between the two players, of course. Among CAA guards, I'd also rate Eli Pemberton significantly above Lewis.

It gives him a chance to work with NBA scouts and trainers, while allowing him to come back to college whether it be here or somewhere else. Doubt it would be elsewhere because it is kind of late in the transfer market process, but still. The rules were changed to allow this to happen so why not do it?

This is a bad joke, right? That’s how I read the thread title. If this is what Lewis thinks his “head ain’t right”.

RE: Matt Lewis declares for NBA Draft but can still return to JMU:
He knows he isn't getting drafted in this class. In his statement he said "I'm looking forward to learning from this experience." As others have mentioned this is pretty commonplace now for any kid who has aspriations of going pro, whether it be in the NBA or overseas. Gives them an opportunity to see what needs to be improved to play at the next level and has zero downside.

RE: Matt Lewis declares for NBA Draft but can still return to JMU:
Also puts him on the radar in terms of scouts- scouts will find kids if they are good enough to play without declaring but I do think teams will do due diligence on everyone who does declare more so than kids that don’t. We know Matt’s limitations and obviously the struggles of the teams that he has been a big part of on the floor and in terms of wins and losses but the reality is that he has ability and predicated on being a pg he has decent pg size. Shooting percentages need to increase dramatically but their are clips instances and flashes of his potential.

I compare it to the nfl qb prospect from a “smaller”School who has been uneven but can make all the throws and the scouts may say well he didn’t have much around him. You could make a case that Matt is that guy. He can hit the nba 3 point shot- he has that range, he can drive and score at the rim too.

RE: Matt Lewis declares for NBA Draft but can still return to JMU:
I provided my main thoughts on Matt's decision in the "Hoops transfer forecast" thread. I'll just add in this thread two additional points...

1. I hope Matt stays and finishes his career at JMU. I hope we see him in the new arena, with the new head coach, and one helluva standing O on Senior Night.

2. If he leaves, good luck to him. Losing 4 of 5 starters will be tough for any program. But, we knew this was a legit reality that could take place when firing Rowe. Here's the other "reality" though...that is, when you go 2-16 and bail in the first game of the Keener-Rowe Invitational, the new staff can and probably will do better with or without you. Sorry to be so blunt, but it is what it is.

No doubt the new staff can do
Better but that doesn’t mean that they can’t don’t even better with Lewis on the team. Let’s not confuse the two. I’d like to see what Lewis could do with better coaching as a Senior perhaps at PG.

RE: Matt Lewis declares for NBA Draft but can still return to JMU:
The purpose of declaring is to get a true feel from scouts what to work on. He is well aware he has no chance and will return (somewhere). But since declaring doesnt hurt his eligibility (as of a couple or few years ago), so it makes perfect sense to test the water and find out what to work on to have any chance later, even if that chance is overseas.

He doesn't need the NBA scouts advice on what he should work on, all he has to do is read the various threads on this forum.

Not sure what you are trying to say in that reply. Sorry.

It’s ok- I’m just saying that there is a general feeling on these boards and understandably so that the basketball team has been awful and that Lewis has been a big part of the team the last few years so if he leaves it’s no big deal. I’m just saying that I believe Lewis can be part of the solution moving forward in 20-21. I’m saying that despite his shortcomings at times and despite the record of the team where he was given a lot of free reign that under a new staff and system and philosophy that I believe he is a talented guy and a hard working guy who wants to win and that JMU under Byington is better off with Matt Lewis than without. I don’t think it’s addition by subtraction. You could make a case that Wilson (undersized below the rim half court oriented post guy) and Parker (PG who struggles shooting) May not be a fit moving forward and it may be addition by subtraction. You can make the case that Banks due to his inconsistency may be addition by subtraction. I don’t think that’s the case with Lewis. He takes a lot of hits but I want to see what he can do as a Senior with better coaching around him.

RE: Matt Lewis declares for NBA Draft but can still return to JMU:
Lewis is dating Oppenheimer’s daughter so Josh being a former NBA coach is guiding Lewis and has been all year. This was part of the chemistry issue we saw with this team last season. Oppenheimer installs a new offense then Lou bails on new offense just prior to the conference schedule. Team goes onto the tank because you have coaches not on the same page. Some players are listening to Lou and some to Josh.

I can promise you that basketball players only care about themselves and playing basketball. Times have changed. Academics and the school are way down the priority list for the guys who are starters. They are focused on making a living playing basketball and whatever/wherever can get them to the highest level of professional play. They don’t look at JMU the way we fans do.

Matt is going to put Matt first. Do I think he has an inflated view of his skills? Yes. Is that a bad thing? No. Confidence in oneself is the best attribute an athlete can have in my opinion. The world is full of good athletes who deep down don’t truly believe in their abilities and thus don’t ever reach their full potential. Matt’s head is actually in the right place for Matt. It just means that JMU basketball is not his highest priority.

That's the problem with most college basketball players, they think they're NBA All Stars in the making because they got a free ride to an average mid major D1 school. They put 99% of their focus on a skill that they will have a 1% chance of honing to the point where it produces a livable income for them. That's about where I'd put Matt's chances of playing in a NBA game. If he can't make JMU his focus, he needs to man up and offer his scholly to a kid who will.

Agree.

I do think most are realistic. They are just looking to play professionally and make a good living doing what they enjoy (often times markedly better than they would have otherwise). I think the mid major coach more so recruits the opportunity to play professionally. Several recent JMU players (regardless of how the team has done) are doing so or have done so. If you can make 6 figures playing overseas that is attractive and practical for these guys. I don’t think they are delusional and think they will play in the NBA and make millions.
