This is laughable. I get the reasoning and that it doesn't mean he expects to get drafted, but he's not even a first team all conference player in a bad conference. I wish some of these kids had a little better perspective.

I don't know, it's kind of like going to a job fair when you already have a job. At best, something works out for you and you leave your current job; more likely you go back to your job, you get some feedback on areas to improve to get to where you want to be, you meet people who could give you opportunities later on, and you know what opportunities do exist or could exist in the future.

There are some industries/employers that might fire you for looking around, but I can't imagine Byington is going to kick him off the team for exploring his options.

It isn't always about getting drafted to the NBA, but rather setting up his potential future playing career. Juwann James was a CAA Rookie of the Year (2006), CAA All Rookie Team, and CAA 2nd Team in 2009. All on bad to mediocre teams. That's it. He has been playing in Europe for over a decade. Is it as good as the NBA? No. But he gets paid to play basketball even though he was on a bad college team.

Some careers require internships, friends/family in high places, or high level work in college to get started. Playing basketball requires getting noticed by scouts, coaches, and administrators. Declaring for the draft, while keeping your college options open, is a smart way to do that with relatively low risk. Every college player with thoughts of going pro somewhere should do it.

There is ZERO chance Matt gets drafted to the NBA and IMO little to no change he even gets a G-League look. I hope he just wants to get the 'free' evaluation and comes back.

Even if he comes back Matt is NOT an NBA level player, ever. He can make a living playing overseas or South America but that hardly seems like the fame and fortune one would leave college early for.

I can promise you that basketball players only care about themselves and playing basketball. Times have changed. Academics and the school are way down the priority list for the guys who are starters. They are focused on making a living playing basketball and whatever/wherever can get them to the highest level of professional play. They don’t look at JMU the way we fans do.

Matt is going to put Matt first. Do I think he has an inflated view of his skills? Yes. Is that a bad thing? No. Confidence in oneself is the best attribute an athlete can have in my opinion. The world is full of good athletes who deep down don’t truly believe in their abilities and thus don’t ever reach their full potential. Matt’s head is actually in the right place for Matt. It just means that JMU basketball is not his highest priority.

Agree but will add my opinion that when Openheimer was hired it became apparent pretty early on that there was a very divide coaching staff and team. A little perplexing why Coach Rowe would hire him knowing they would struggle to work together.

Speaking of Oppenheimer. Last 10 minutes or so are about his time with JMU.

Agreed. Some of the responses in this thread are unnecessarily negative.

The NBA is the best professional basketball league in the world. Matt Lewis will have opportunities to play professional basketball, so it makes sense that he would seek feedback from professional scouts who evaluate players' abilities to play basketball at the highest level.

Declaring early while maintaining collegiate eligibility is a no-risk move for Lewis, and I'm sure Coach Byington fully supports Matt's decision.

Based on the bold above, in your opinion now that the season is over and Lou Rowe is gone should JMU have moved on from Rowe mid-season once it was clear the wheels were off the bus?

I am hopeful Matt returns, but assuming he does not for the moment...

...this opens the door for a battle between returning rising-Soph. Zyon Dobbs and La-Monroe transfer Jalen Hodge for the starting point guard position. Of course, lots of things can happen between now and next season (and using the word "assuming" again in that we have a season).

-Can Jayvis Harvey play some point? Will Harvey return?
-Will HCMB bring in another point or combo guard who can run the point?

Losing Matt will be a big deal as I've posted already. Not only is he our best player - perhaps by far - but a 4th year starting senior would or could be a huge relief for HCMB and staff in their first year. Not to mention, Matt is the only real go-to guy on the roster in crunch time when we need a basket.

As of now Hodge needs to redshirt, unless the NCAA passes the waiver.

Correct. Though, everything I've read is the likelihood is very strong that it will be passed over the summer.

That's a deep generalization. Matt has earned plenty of awards and has to start thinking about his future beyond JMU. Averaging 19 points a game isn't something just any D-1 athlete can do. Having professional aspirations is never an issue. The issue comes when the HC can't help the athlete manage those goals within the system and the media.

If Lewis comes back he’ll probably go down as the most maligned 2000 point scorer at a mid major ever. Personally I think Ron Curry was better but that’s not as much as indictment on Lewis as it is a compliment to how good a player Curry was for JMU. That said Matt has been good and has a chance to be even better his Senior season.

Curry was significantly better.

Agreed- loved Curry as a player but he played for a better coach too so I’d like to see what Lewis can do there. I think Curry will go down as a better player regardless but Lewis can down as a really good player at JMU as well if he makes strides and the team wins his Senior season.

Matt is really talented and I hope he does remain on the team. However maybe he's not a good match for the system coach would like to implement. I have no idea how "coachable" Matt really is.
