Sounds wrong to me. I saw an interview with someone from the club on local TV a few weeks ago and he definitely said it was a club team.

Club sports still play in organized leagues and such. Wrestling at UT competes in the D1 Great Lakes conference of the NCWA. So, not part of NCAA, so not NCAA varsity. Webpage: https://toledowrestling.weebly.com/

Hockey is similar. They are a club sport but play in D1 of ... I forget the Hockey organization name.

They could offer scholarships, but I believe the money from those comes from fundraising by the club and donations, not from the University directly.

Correct on all counts.

Thanks everyone. The things that really threw me were “varsity” and “scholarships”.

RE: Wrestling is a varsity sport at UT?
Hadn't been on here for awhile and this subject line grabbed my interest. Looks like it was already answered as to what the team is comprised of. They compete in a division called the NCWA which also has national championships, dual meets, etc. Even Penn State has a team that competes in that division. Looked through their line-up and don't recognize any of the names although there is 1 each from Waite, Start, and Bedford.

As an aside, former Clay wrestler Matt Stencel was named as the MAC most outstanding wrestler of the year. He is a junior at Central Michigan and finished the season with his 3rd straight MAC championship and was ranked 4th in the country heading into the NCAA championships (where he strangely was only given a #5 seed) before they were cancelled. He had a 30-4 record and his only losses were to the #2 ranked wrestler from Michigan (lost 3 times to him - all close matches) and 1 to the #3 ranked wrestler from Iowa.

He could have been wrestling at UT if they had a varsity team in the MAC....that is, if his high school coach's son wasn't an assistant coach at CMU...
