Men's Soccer is no more.
Mind you, the same thing probably should happen to Men's basketball as well. But the NCAAM league still has far more weight to throw around than the G-league or European leagues. But, as we talk about all the time, even that's beginning to change.

I really dont think collegiate soccer is rising in popularity. I could be wrong, but the growth seems to be in youth participation and professional interest.

Yeah, I don't see college soccer ever being a big thing popularity wise. Many soccer fans already have an MLS team and a European club they follow. Not a lot of room for college soccer.

This was absolutely not a Title IX decision, unlike what everyone seems to think. This was the lowest hanging fruit for the AD in the discussions of overall cuts.

Also, the "rising popularity" argument definitely didn't translate to attendance at all. My god, we won a Big East title while I was on the team and I think the MOST we had in Gettler for a game was MAYBE 700. I played in front of larger crowds for some of my high schools games. I also feel a lot of you would be surprised to see some of the big name schools that do not have men's soccer....I mean, the SEC and Big 12 don't even sponsor men's soccer as a sport. Lots of people making uninformed comments, though it is the internet.

Possible, but I'd really be surprised. The Lindner family philanthropy has been all in with UC--tens of millions of dollars for academics, athletics, medicine and health care initiatives.

What value does FCC add by throwing cash at a small, private university in town where few members of its own student body bother to show up for soccer matches, much less other tri-state sports fans?

FCC has its hands full financially while building their palatial, privately funded stadium in the West End and assembling a roster that can compete in the majors so they can fill all those new seats. Helping prop up X men's soccer seems unlikely and of little value to the FCC brand.

And to another comment on this matter, if the ACC or B12 came calling, UC has excellent soccer facilities in place and could re-boot the program quickly if needed. I'm confident that Cunningham chose carefully from a list of unattractive options and conference realignment must weigh into any such decision.

Title IX.

UC needs those women's scholarships to balance the large number allocated to football. A different challenge from non-football D1 schools for sure.

Okay but if they drop all the men's scholarships from soccer, and assuming things were balanced before, shouldn't they have more woman's scholarships now? Again, I'm not trying to sound obtuse, I just really don't understand.

There are only 9.9 scholarships for Men's Soccer as outlined by the NCAA. No women's sport would be able to be dropped without there needing to be further re-balancing on the Men's side. The legislation has stipulations that the measure can be balanced within reason and on a percentage scale in order to stop runaway scenarios like that from occurring. Essentially, there can be as many or more women's athletics scholarships provided, but not more men's, so the "balance" is definitely one sided, but that was written in the provisional legislation in the '60s and has never been adjusted (despite many calls to do so) for common sense purposes. Honestly, given the state of the legislation currently, I wouldn't be shocked to see ADs go down to the minimum 14 here soon, with Football, Men's Basketball, and all others being non-scholarship sponsored sports (Golf, T&F, etc.) followed by the remaining scholarships sports being women only. IMO that's how just about every school running a significant deficit SHOULD do it. The 14 sport limit is another stupid thing that forces schools to over-extend, but alas, there are far too many dumb regulations within the NCAA code to count.

I also need to reiterate, dropping Men's Soccer has absolutely nothing to do with Title IX.

RE: Men's Soccer is no more.
There are a lot of folks on the AD Facebook page who are "outraged" by this decision. I wonder how many of these people have ever even been to a Bearcats soccer game, and how many of them have ANY understanding of how athletic department finances work? Most of us can't claim to be experts, but we know enough about the predicament we are in financially to realize this was probably a financially prudent decision that was carefully considered. I hate it when people who have no clue start shooting their mouths off just to b!tch. But that's the world we live in.

Did the team have a head coach?

I thought they fired the coach after last season which made this an "easy" sport to cut.

Hungry for details.

Do we still sponsor a club team?

Do current players on scholarship get to keep their scholarships? If yes, whose budget does that come out of?

Does this affect the relationship with FCC?

I'll try to feed you a heaping plate.

Yes, the competed in the National Championship Tournament again last year, for the 5th time in 8 years.

Yes, their scholarships are guaranteed within the athletics department budgets for four years (8 semesters) to be used to complete their degree or until they choose to leave the institution. Once a student signs on the dotted line, their scholarships are placed on that sport's operating budget until they are no longer a student. Also, none of the players on this years team had more than a 50% award if I had to guess...back when I played, Coach Dayes very rarely went above 50% for any guys unless they were nationally recruited since most of us were receiving pretty decent merit scholarship packages and it was an easy way to sell us (I was a half-ride Cincinnatus kid and got a 25% award from Soccer, so it was next to nothing for me to attend with the cost of housing covered), and we couldn't pull many of them outside of the late 00's when we were still riding the NCAAT and Big East Championship gravy. I'm not sure if that has changed, but he had to make 9.9 scholarships fit between 24-30 players depending on the year. There might be a full scholly or 75% award in there, but I'd doubt it. The issue became equity and dealing with perception, same as a guy who gets paid and how that might affect a clubhouse and the individual in pro sports. The issue is going to be housing considerations, and those are NOT guaranteed by any NCAA guideline...though I doubt UC would deny them since it would be a terrible PR move.

I don't believe there was any sort of "relationship" between UC Soccer and FCC more than just a "hey, you exist, let's play sometimes" sort of thing. It would get really close to improper benefits and institutional control issues if a professional sports team did anything more than that...doesn't happen in any other sports, so it shouldn't happen in soccer either.

Good timing as Hylton Dayes the long time coach had recently resigned. I wonder if he knew the program was on the chopping block?

I do feel sorry for the kids who came here to play.

That said, it is hard to argue with the decision. You only have so many dollars and so much attention.

I wonder how much the endowment has been hit. Recently people on here wanted to hit that up for athletics.

I’m by no means a soccer fan but that stinks. Still a sport many play and love.

When visiting my friends at UC in college I loved walking across campus to find a game going on and stopping by to take 15-30 minutes of the game in.

Bush league.

I even gave extra this year to the "secret" 6 million football locker room renovation so stuff like this wouldn't happen. But it does. G5.

I give...up.
