Monday Musings windy willow run
Windy day here in south east Michigan especially the greater Ypsilanti area.... Reminds me of Rynearson stadium which is a wind tunnel and is a miserable place to watch a game after October and if we have spring football in 2021 I will watch from inside the Convo windows..
I loved the idea in last weeks thread of getting Bowen refurbished for basketball and using the convo as a revenue source for concerts. Going to have think creatively the next few years as big colleges.
Couple questions
what was peak enrollment at emu?
what was peak resident enrollment at emu?

Thompson block work looks grinded to a halt but the rest of the area restaurants are trying hard with the carry out to stay open.

We need to put a plan in place and push for making Bowen the basketball venue again.

I agree that it would be a cool thing if Bowen was redone, but come on. We have the 3rd newest arena in the conference. The Convo is in great shape as it is. Bowen will not happen - not a chance.

What we actually need to work on is making the convo a more fan friendly and visually appealing place to watch a game - especially in the concourse.

If there is any way to renovate Bowen and lease/sell the Convo in a way that saves (or makes) us money, we should do it.

Foolishness, but probably accurate.

Since you raised the subject, would Bowen be knocked down, if a new indoor track was erected on the West Campus? Or simply repurposed?

Lest I be wrong, if Bowen was knocked down, could something new be built there and with the land adjacent which used to be tennis courts decades ago.

The initial renderings of the buildings around rynearson included an indoor track. I suspect that as they build that facility up and add on to it you'll see much of bowen knocked down.

They'll probably keep the rec / IM and the pools on main campus and maybe expand the park? I would rather have that than a parking lot.

True, but remember, that the indoor track would have been where the SAPC building in. The SAPC building was to be in the NW corner of Rynearson.

I understand there was problems with the soil or whatever there and hence they had to change the plans which ended up as we see it today.

My GUESS: if someone would drop 8-digits (say 10 or 20M more) EMU might be able to replace the IPF with a substantial building which could include indoor track.

Since that isn't likely to happen... Things are as they are...

Dear Friends,
It is nice to have fond memories of what Bowen Field House meant to everyone, but I feel those that want a return to relive the memories, are not thinking it through. First, Bowen is located in a part of the main campus that would need a large parking lot for the spectators to park. That space is not available. Second, would you go back to the temporary bleacher setup, which what it was for the vast majority of seating, and if not, what would the costs be to renovate with permanent seating? Lastly, Eastern's administration decided a long time ago that an athletic campus would be located where we presently have Rynearson, The Convocation Center, Oestrike, et al.

Agree.

And as I believe KPJ posted, EMU did away with the bleachers, etc.

What is truly SHOCKING is how we had very good/excellent programs in a field house which wasn't even a high school gym.

Maybe it could be described as an indoor track and field facility converted for basketball usage. It wasn't even a h.s. gym built with the dimensions for a bball court.

I liked the way John Fountain referred to it as the old barn.

There was a school not far away that had a gymnasium that was very similar to Bowen...in fact they won a National Championship in 1979. The old barn was called Jenison Fieldhouse and the school was Michigan State University. Bowen was PERFECT for EMU and Ken, you don't need extra parking because the majority of the spectators would be able to walk to games--college students! What a concept. #bringbackbowen

Steve, yes what a beautiful photo of the venerable Jenison Field House. Built in 1940, it is still viable today in the center of MSU's campus, albeit not for Big 10 basketball. Let's cherish our history. Bowen is truly unique and definitely worthy of being the home court for Eastern Michigan University, Mid American Conference basketball.

They marketed the crap out of the EMU version of Moonlight/Midnight Madness two years ago and it was a train wreck. Not because the programming was bad, but because NO ONE came.
It was in the Rec (it was Rock the Rec after all), not Bowen, but it was still an unmitigated disaster. Terrible parking situation for the those of us that would be paying customers during th season. I’m sorry, but I don’t see student support increasing just because the games are on campus.
When I was in school I knew a few of the guys because we were in the same dorm. It was fun to watch guys that I considered my friends play. Getting to the Convo wasn’t that hard to figure out. Don’t seem to seem much of that anymore.

So cool. And well deserved at that. Quian was awesome last year, and he has a chance to take his game to the next level as the #1 receiver in our offense. I anticipate big things from him.
