The cost was estimated at half a million dollars and they are dipping into the reserve fund to finance it. The reserve fund will also cover an estimated 4 million dollar deficit in the athletic department finances which has a fiscal year ending in June, mostly due to coronavirus.

I guess Im uninformed on the details on this one. How does this affect the new kids coming in this fall? Is the NCAA giving schools a 1-year pass on scholarship limits in each sport to make room for everyone? Thats the only way I can see for this to work.

Extension on roster sizes and scholarship limits for each spring sport, with the limitations that roster sizes and scholarship limits for all athletes other than the returning 5th year athletes remain the same, and each returning 5th year athlete can get no more than the same amount of athletic scholarship aid that they received in 2019-20.

Washington State is also letting 5th year spring sports athletes return:

Quote:[WSU AD] Chun also said the school is estimating an additional $300,000 in grant-in-aid costs for athletes in spring sports who have indicated an interest in taking advantage of having an additional year of eligibility.

2 of the bottom revenue schools in the Pac 12 and ACC are making a high revenue Big 10 school look bad.

Yes, the NCAA said in its press release that scholarship limits were being relaxed to accommodate this.
