Both Reboul and Shoop were running well regarded D1 programs at BSC when they were shut down by the school's decision to start a D3 football program which meant all other sports programs had to match it. One coach moved to UAB and now the other has moved to Samford. I think it interesting that BSC for FB and Samford for BB have signed HCs from Mountain Brook HS.

BNB is right. While BSC was a NAIA member most of that time, they had joined NCAA Division I at the end of Reboul's tenure. In fact, BSC won the Big South Conference Regular Season championship in their first season in D-1.

I thought BSC dropped down due to financial reasons with the university PRIOR to making the football move.

The emotional drive to restore football at BSC predated the financial problems. The "Munger Bowl" football stadium had lain dormant for many years since the program had been terminated back when they played "Howard College" in East Lake. After the new Arts Building was built on the Munger Bowl site, a new football stadium was needed.

As a D3 Jon scholarship program all of the players are paying students. It’s actually a way to increase paid enrollment. Add marching band, flag girls, majorettes and cheerleaders that’s a lot of extra students. It also makes it more desirable for regular students. Football can do a lot for enrollment as UAB can testify
