RE: SEVERELY Premature Basketball Rotation (2020-2021)
Best case Lowder is with us for the beginning of the season, worse case he comes in mid year to join the rotation.

Right now a grad transfer big man makes sense or take a chance on a prep school big and redshirt them.

So I know this type of speculation is obnoxiously premature. We are still seven months (at best) away from the start of next basketball season. We still have pieces to add to our current roster, and...who knows? We may have another transfer or two of our own depart.

That said I love basketball, and I am bored and have been thinking about this exercise anyway. Why not have a thread to continuously update our starting lineup and depth projections, even as they are constantly evolving?

Here’s my first shot. I’m sure we’ll be chuckling about this a few months from now. BTW — I’m not including walk-ons, and I’m only placing each player in one position. In reality we operate in the “positionless basketball” era, and many players play several positions. However, for this projection it is far simpler to assign players to only one position. It is my hope that this may give us a sense of where our roster needs may be.

PG: McBride - Spottsville - James
SG: Montero - Morgan - Dillard
SF: Groce - Gibson
PF: Binelli - Juco/Transfer - Pacheco
C: Love III - Juco/Transfer

So, a few things stand out. With the addition of McBride our PG position has pretty good depth. SG is extremely deep, as James can play there as well. Montero, Morgan, and Dillard can play the 3 with no problem, so the wing is deep too.

Our frontcourt is problematic. Binelli is fine as a “modern” 4, but we really don’t have anyone behind him. I’d like to see them get a rebounding-minded 4, since that would compliment Binelli well. We have no idea what we have in Pacheco. Love III will be a great contributor if healthy, but we can’t make that presumption. Someone else is needed, hopefully a more experienced player who can serve as a backup, and who can also help Love III manage his minutes.

Any thoughts or predictions of your own? Am I missing anything?

Cow, I am curious to where you and others have Lowder in this lineup? Does he usurp McBride’s standing?

Thanks for bumping this Ramy! I was thinking about reviewing my list to see how Lowder’s transfer could impact the rotation. I do think his acquisition clears up a few things...

Here’s my stab at it:
PG - McBride - Lowder - Spottsville
SG - Montero - James - Dillard
SF - Morgan- Gibson
PF - Groce - Binelli
C - Love III - Pacheco
Open Slot(s): One

First off I LOVE(!) Lowder, and think he’s our PG of the future. However, he only played 12 games for Holy Cross his freshman year, and we all know that Murphy values experience. Even if Lowder gets a waiver (I think he will, but not a certainty), Murphy will start him off slowly. McBride is more mature physically and will be ready to go from day 1. That said, I could see a scenario where by mid-season Lowder is starting at PG and McBride is at SG, particularly if Morgan continue to struggle shooting the ball. In that case, Montero could just start at the 3 and McBride could be the full-time 2.

I think another thing that the Lowder acquisition does is kick Chris James to SG for the long-term. This will be particularly important in 21-22 when Montero and Morgan are gone.

Also, it seems like Murphy is going to use a small lineup this year. I see Montero and Morgan as interchangeable at the 2 and 3 slots, which would bump Groce to the 4. I know he is undersized for this role, but he really has more of a 4’s game anyway. This would allow Binelli to come off the bench in an offensive gunner role, to which I think he is more suited.

I’m still scared about the 5. Love III is promising but hasn’t played extended basketball in a long time. We don’t know anything about Pacheco, other than the fact that he has a banger’s body. I would think that Murphy will get additional depth in the post with the last scholarship. I’m also half-expecting one of Spottsville, Dillard, or Gibson to leave...Just a gut feeling, no inside info. It will be an interesting summer.

What do you all think?

Great stuff, as usual.

I keep forgetting about Gibson. Someone is going to leave. We have way too many players for everyone to stick around in the “transfer era”. My hope is that it isn’t James or Dillard. Keep all of our youth.

You hit the nail on the head with James being off the ball. He’d pair well with a score-first PG, and that seems to be what we are getting with McBride and Lowder.

Even in a lame duck year, Murphy still finds talent. I don’t know how he does it. With the right adjustments to our player personnel, like an uptempo game plan, we could contend in the MAC. Sadly, I don’t trust Murphy to execute once the games start. As always, I hope this is the year that it changes.

Isn't McBride short for a SG, esp. in a Murphy zone?

McBride played off the ball some in JUCO. If McBride and Lowder are your two best offensive players (and I think at some point they will be) it could be an option, if only for short bursts of time.

Agreed. I'd prefer a grad transfer or even a regular transfer, since most will probably be getting waivers due to COVID.

I agree on James and Dillard. They're talented guys, and the new coach is going to need them next year. Lol.

I don't know what to expect with Gibson. He's someone you never hear about. If it wasn't for the Verbal Commits website, I'd question if he's still on the roster.

If Murphy's in-game coaching matched his recruiting, he'd be a superstar!

Gibson isn't that difficult to figure out:

The big question was to bring him back for part of a season (like the Wizards had to decide the same on John Wall who could suit up tomorrow, if needed) or let him redshirt.

They decided not to burn a year so he gets a medical redshirt.

I think of him as part of THIS year's recruiting class.

That part is understood.

I guess I'm questioning what Murphy thinks of him, how he will be used, etc. Is he good enough to be a major rotation piece? Or is he a 5-10 minute guy? He's a wildcard.

As I recall Miles had 8 to 10 D1 offers and he chose us. That was pre ACL.

Shamar Dillard is transferring, per Verbal Commits. Disappointing, but not surprising given the guard depth.

At least two slots open now; plenty of room to add to the frontcourt.

Dammit! Dillard, has the god given assets to match the guys recruited 6 miles west. He needs a lot of work on his skills but I see him as a overseas player in the future. I don't blame him, Murph is not a Beilein type developer and this kid could be a force given a chance elsewhere.

I have whined for years about Rob's inability to recruit talented freshman. I WAS WRONG. His two prizes, Lee and JT4, did stay for four years but both of their senior teams were picked to win the MAC and under-performed while both served suspensions in their expected leadership Senior season.

If I coached in the MAC today, I would avoid high school gyms and instead hit the junior colleges and monitor the transfer portal like Murphy does. With all of this increased transfer activity, the expectation of the one-year sit out rule to be abolished and the increased divide between the Majors and the MAC, it makes no sense to find talented HS kids. Diamonds in the rough, so to speak will transfer to more prominent programs once they find how truly talented they are. Murph was right.

Awful news. I was a huge fan of his. But I can’t blame him for leaving.

Agree, he probably figured it would be like last season, he might play 10 minutes a game! Dillard and James both have intangibles of Big 10 players! This is a huge blow! But, with all the JUCO'S and transfer players, kids lose there patience really quick! I agree with Jerry, unless a kid can start as a true freshman, in today's basketball world, avoid high school players!

I have NO idea why a player would announce intent to transfer at MID-JUNE.

This makes NO sense to me. Players should already have their new schools.

You’re preaching to the choir. It makes no sense to me either.

I’m wondering if this was initiated by an honest conversation with Murphy? Maybe Murphy has a few things in the works? That would be the only thing that would explain the timing.

I really want this roster finalized before July 20 so the newcomers have some time to play together and mix in. I have no idea what's happening with Kirkwood and or Diarra and their recruitment. Having said that I don't see any new offers either. Maybe Barnes and King are coming back, who knows?

SEVERELY Premature Basketball Rotation (2020-2021)
Predictions on when Coaching Candidates thread pops up again on this forum? I'll go with January 20, 2021.

Earlier. Probably half time of the game where whatever P5 school we are playing is winning by 30+.

I both agree and disagree with you, Sam. I think those games will surely happen. But I think we will also have some decent wins against some solid mid majors, so we will be thinking at least we will be competitive in the MAC. Murphy far more often than not has a pretty good OOC performance. So we will hear some disgruntled rumblings within the game thread when EMU gets absolutely destroyed in those games, but I don’t think it will generate a whole thread on the matter. I do think when EMU starts the MAC 1-3or4, then we will realize it is another waisted season. I think Wooden’s call of Jan 20 might be more accurate. Otherwise, I will rarely disagree with you.

Or more likely: play 10 minutes a game 5-6 games, then never leave the bench for 5-6 games, then all of a sudden come back into the rotation for 5-6 games maybe at a different position, and then repeat...
