What I love about Tarleton's campus are the trees. Lots and lots of big shady oak trees. Probably been there 100's of years. The green grass, flowers and walkways are all meticulously maintained, and its very walkable.

So you just walk across a street and climb over a wall? It is crazy how close to Mexico UTEP is.

NMSU,UTEP, UNM and Zona all have solid basketball support. What is about that corner of the country that loves that sport so much?

Historical success coupled with the fact that there are no major professional sports in these areas could be a contributing factor to the level of support we see for each of these programs. That is just an outsider's perspective, though. Folks from inside those communities would have to let us know if there is any truth to my assumption.

Oh, come on. You can say it.. I've been there, wouldn't call it hideous, but it's definitely not a looker. Got that constant dirt/smog thing sitting over it like we get in Phoenix proper during the summer months (May-November)

What GCU is doing with that campus, in that part of town, is truly amazing. Literally transforming an entire area of West Phoenix that had seen better days. If they ever get the light rail extension out to Glendale it'll be a game changer. It will run right in front of GCU's campus. *Attention all RE investors.

Somewhere in those pictures, there is also the Rio Grande River that needs to be crossed as well. Also, the UTEP campus elevation is much high than it appears since it sit at the base of the Franklin Mountains. BTW, there also used to be an ugly ASARCO plant with large smoke stacks right off river near there. As I have said the UTEP's campus is not ugly. The architecture of the buildings are very interesting. But the surround area around the campus is not esthetically pleasing.

I feel like I've heard that GCU isn't actually all that thrilled with the prospects of light rail running right in front of campus. The rail itself might be great, but it seems like the concern I heard was regarding the issues that could accompany it (e.g. increased drugs, crime, etc.). Not sure where I saw or heard that, but will do some digging and post here if I can find anything.

Can't wait til Tarleton Baseball plays on that Dixie field. Hopefully it'll be a wakeup call.

Yea i mean baseball at most D1 schools in Texas will be a wakeup call for your AD. Heck even UMHBs is better than some D1s. Football stadium too.

This is a great question. I can tell you that NM is a basketball crazed state. Folks talk about Texas and friday night lights. But in NM, it is all about basketball. Heck, my HS didn't even have FB as a sport when I was growing up (they do now). The state championships for BB are a sight to behold. Wise Pies arena in ABQ (used to be 18k, now just over 15k) regularly sells out for tiny schools that compete from all over NM. Entire towns will travel to watch their local HS team compete.

RE: For the NMSU fans: Conference Descrambler
Funny thing is NMSU, UNM, and UTEP were on the same level as Arizona (basketball wise) until the late 1970's. It wasn't until Arizona was firmly footed in the PAC-10 (at the time) and Lute Olsen arrived there in the early 1980's that the Wildcats started distancing itself (talent wise) from their former Border Conference members. The head-to-head match up between Arizona and New Mexico State is 19 wins for Arizona and 20 wins for New Mexico State. Arizona closed the gap to one this past season. Still NMSU leads the series. Most of those Aggie wins coming before the 1970's.

Wow, I never knew UVU, CBU, CSU, and Dixie had such nice arenas! I knew GCU and NMSU did. I hope thats not what a typical game at CSU looks like though... yikes

That looks like the highest attendance game of that season for CSU, tbh.

CBU's arena is brand new. I think it is 2 years old. Dixie's is also very new. UVU's looks really weird on TV. And CSU might have the best arena of all.

UTRGV has access to the brand new Bert Ogden Arena which is really nice. And Seattle may be back to playing in Key Arena when the renovations are complete.

I'll admit, I'm envious of Dixie's facilities as our fellow D2 move-up. We've been able to win with less, and hopefully it'll translate to even more wins when we get everyrhing up to snuff.
