RE: 2020-21 Hoops Transfers and NIU Recruiting
Athletics will tell us what they want us to know when they want us to know it. That's their attitude. That said, I don't think it's really the fans' fault, and I certainly cannot blame Monty for low attendance. Except for the $$ people, athletics does not reach out to students, we "basic" alumni or the community. You have to donate through the HAF before they acknowledge your existence. Northern needs an "outreach" sort of program. I'm not sure how they do that. It just doesn't seem to be in their "corporate" DNA.

A lot of people complain that Monty hasn't done a whole lot with 9 years, but how do you do that at NIU with no support? Perhaps a recruiting stance like THammock ... Chicago metro first, then expanding outward. THammock is all abourt recruit, recruit, recruit. He and his staff get out to the high schools and junior colleges (obviously, not now). It seems to me this is more critical with a smaller squad.

He has one more year on his contract (June 30, 2021), but I'd say with another winning season, give him an extension. Not 2-3 years, but one at a time. At a school like NIU, you don't throw out what success you've had to start all over unless there is no step-up from the past season.

That's just imo.

Monty should be given to the end of his contract. If next year is mediocre or worse, I would say sayonara to him. I think it's time the administration starts to expect the same excellence that the disappearing fans do.

As to your first paragraph, I could not agree more. I donate several thousand annually to the HAF, and they don't acknowledge my existence. There is indeed no reaching out to the donors. I have stated in the past that they should have an informal get-together with the donors (and they could do a few of these by donor level so it does not get too crowded). Sort of a meet-and-greet. And they MUST do it on a Saturday. The heck with this weeknight crap. Some of us live a long distance from DeKalb that precludes attending an event like this on a weeknight. They could serve light hors d'oeuvres and something to drink. Show the donors that you care. The few dollars they spend on this will be good PR and may result in bigger donations. (Of course, any get-togethers would have to be post COVID.)

My guess is yes. German was the driving force this season.

That being said, there is no way you fire a coach during this time and based on this season's results he does get one more year IMO.

At no point have I suggested Monty be fired right now. The reality is he should have been fired at the end of several previous years and instead, STF gave him an unnecessary and undeserved extensions. And therein lies the problem with STF. There's no telling if he hasn't already given another extension and it's doubtful he has the guts to go into the next season saying "produce significant wins or we try another approach." And simply being just above .500 and nothing less than first or second in the division followed by a MAC title game appearance is a significant change. Even a narrow semifinal loss could just be a fluke.

And if you took away “W”s vs some of those out of conference patsies....you wouldn’t even have those 2 years of .500.

Montys “deserves” nada.
RP was not a tough act to follow.

They’re coming off one of their, if not the, most successful years in two decades. It’s not Monty’s fault it was canceled for COVID.

Of COURSE it was one of their most successful seasons in 2 decades because it was the Senior season of one of the most prolific scorers in Huskie history!

Not being in a bar for almost two months has softened you is all I can figure.

RE: 2020-21 Hoops Transfers and NIU Recruiting
I'm new to this board as in posts, but being a Huskie grad and fan, I gave always popped in this forum to read updates and view people's opinions of NIU's Athletics.

I really enjoyed when Big Red started this thread to give us updated info on MBB recruits and transfers as well as the rest of the MAC's transfers. You can tell that he spent a lot of his personal time to do the research needed to supply us with the info that we wouldn't get from other websites or NIU.

I was unhappy to see that this thread turned into a Merits of Monty( I thought the acronym was perfect for Mothers Day) discussion just like the hundreds previously discussed on Monty's performance. I have no problem discussing the Monty era, after all, that is what a forum is for, but did it gave to happen on Big Red's recruit/transfer thread?

Is there a way to trim the Monty discussion from this thread and take those post and start a new thread?

RE: 2020-21 Hoops Transfers and NIU Recruiting
I agree, tho with the same guilt as anyone else attached. But that's how threads go. The only limitation is that they be clean, sans personal attack and about NIU (as I understand it) or related somehow. Also, anyone at any time can try to turn a thread back to its OP topic.

The forum reflects how conversations go. Ever been at a gathering of family and friends, someone starts talking about something, and five minutes later you realize they're talking now about something else?

Big Red will post something about NIU and MAC recruits and transfers when he gets it, and back we'll go. And he also commented on the "other" posts as well. Skip what you don't want to read. Put in what you want, get back what you want.

And welcome to our fan forum, btw. Despite all that, it's a great place to share info, opinions, etc.

Also ... Big Red's info is valued because NIU's success depends on who the Huskies get, who the teams we play get, and the coach. Who's coaching these guys is as important as who they are.

RE: 2020-21 Hoops Transfers and NIU Recruiting
Hey guys, thanks for the kind words.

I think I want to ask a question, but I don't know how well I can follow through on it. I've kicked around the idea of extending this to include HS senior recruits but it's kind of hard to find stats and whatnot about some of the guys. MUCH easier to find JUCO numbers (as long as I pull the data from the correct year...).

I could do a very rough list but it may be more time consuming for me to initially compile than it would be informative.

Again, this could be the stay-at-home order talking. I mean, don't get me wrong. The wife has me plenty busy around here doing home improvement projects we've put off for a while. But, let's be honest, outside of that and wrapping up my Clone Wars chronological re-watch...I've got the time.

Now, once the order lifts (it's gonna lift at some point, right???), I'd have a harder time fitting it in to my schedule. The rigorous schedule of a PE teacher... But still, you all get the idea.

Heck, I know the answer. I know if a person is interested in this content, they'd also be interested in the additional content as well.

I don't know. Let me play around with the idea and think of a way putting it together would make sense to me (or if it does at all).

Thanks for the welcome, 75. You are right, the thread will go in the direction that it goes...or in better vernacular, it is what it is. Big Red seems to be good with it so my concerns are satisfied.

Big Red, I don't really follow High School BB, but if you you need some research help, I'll give it a try.

JUST TO GET THIS BACK ON TRACK ...

Akron has offered JUCO Anderson Miranbeau (ck sp). He's more wide than big but supposedly a 3* recruit. That's about all I know. Perhaps Red has more info.

I don't know much, tbh. If it's not NIU, I don't do a whole lot of digging until a guy commits. But since you asked, I'll say this, he's definitely wide. Listed at 6'7", 275. He had a couple of good offers out of HS (Virginia Tech, Saint Louis) and it looks like Manhattan was interested at some point this offseason, but they pulled their offer or he told them to pound sand (but they haven't filled all of their scholarships yet).

Anyway, that's all I know until he commits (looks like he probably will) and at that time, I'll have some more info.

RE: 2020-21 Hoops Transfers and NIU Recruiting
NIU Recruiting Update:

2020 HS Senior Luke Scheffers:

Not that it matters as NIU doesn't have any scholarships available.

Luke Scheffers - COMMITTED TO CALVIN UNIVERSITY (D-III) (Grand Rapids, MI) - (6'1 - PG - 2* from St. Charles North HS (St. Charles, IL) - I'll do some video research on him tomorrow or the next day. Scheffers has received other offers from Nova Southeastern, Grand Valley State and Lewis University.

As of right now, the only remaining offer NIU has on the table is to 2021 HS Junior, Scottie Ebube (6'8", PF), a 2* recruit from Mundelein HS (Mundelein, IL). Ebube has offers from NIU, SIU, and Miami.

Ebube is a big, strong post player who is more of a traditional post type as opposed to a really athletic big guy like Makoui. I believe Ebube is the younger brother of Chino Ebube who put on a show winning the 2013 Lake County Senior Dunk Competition. Chino was smaller than Scottie going 6'4" and was much more athletic. Chino went on to play at Missouri S&T (which, if my memory doesn't fail me, used to be called Missouri-Rolla and at one point in history was called Missouri School of Mines). But Scottie, being only an incoming HS senior has the body of a college post player and can develop into an inside presence.

Barring any further roster adjustments (highly unlikely), next year's roster will consist of 5 seniors, 8 juniors, 3 sophomores and 0 freshmen. This will be the oldest team that I can remember. Also feels like Monty is going "all in" next season.

RE: 2020-21 Hoops Transfers and NIU Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Keishawn Brewton - Transferring to Buffalo from Coastal Carolina - 6'2" - SG - 2* recruit from St. Ignatius College Prep (Spartanburg, SC) - Brewton started his collegiate career at Chipola College where, as a sophomore, he started 31 of 32 games averaging 25.2 minutes and 19.4 ppg shooting 48.7% from the field (46.8% 3PT - 120 of 166) and collected 3.9 rpg and 2.3 apg. Brewton then transferred to Coastal Carolina for his junior season where he started 11 of 22 games averaging 26.2 minutes and 14.5 ppg shooting 43.7% from the field (37.1% 3PT - 65 of 175) and 75.8% FT. He also averaged 2.3 rpg and 0.8 apg. Brewton appears to be a shooter. I haven't watched any video on him so I'm just scouting his stat lines but it appears he's scored at a healthy clip at every level. I believe Brewton will have to sit a year as he is transferring from a D-I program and he is not a grad transfer unless he applies for and obtains a waiver (and tbh, I wouldn't considering the uncertainty of this season being played either in full or at all). I will say this. I've done a little digging because this thing smells fishy. Brewton left the team and entered the transfer portal on Feb. 4 which is a month before the season would officially end. Why did he leave the team? I'm not sure. But he was the 2nd leading scorer on the team so it's a big loss for the Chanticleers and, presumably a good pick up for Buffalo especially if he can get a waiver to play right away (although I doubt he'd be able to do so). Coming out of JUCO, Brewton had a long list of offers before eventually picking Coastal Carolina. His list included Tennessee-Martin, USC Upstate, UNC-Wilmington, Louisiana-Monroe, Portland State, Iona, Stephen F. Austin, Mercer, St. Bonaventure, Loyola Marymount, East Carolina, Troy, East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, SMU, Georgia Southern, and Arkansas State. I do wonder why he chose Coastal Carolina and I wonder if he favored CCU because it was relatively close to home. Anyway, this year, in addition to Buffalo, Brewton had offers from Kent State and McNeese State.

RE: 2020-21 Hoops Transfers and NIU Recruiting
NIU transfer update:

Gairges Daow - Undecided on Transfer location - 6'4" - SG - Junior - 2* recruit from Victory Rock Prep (South Bradenton, FL) Hometown: Melbourne, Australia; Birthplace: South Sudan - Daow, as we all know, has spent 3 seasons at NIU and this past season, Daow played in 30 games starting in 15 of them averaging 13.2 minutes and 2.9 ppg shooting 46.7% from the field (26.7% 3PT - 4 of 15) and 76.5% FT. Daow also averaged 2 rpg. Daow has become redundant and, most likely buried, on this current roster with the JUCO additions. I always felt that Daow never truly embraced his skill set and that he shot way too much. There were times when he'd get the ball on a rotation and you could tell right away that he was going to figure out how to take a shot. Tbh, he was mis-matched as a guard and always played better mucking it up in the paint. He had a nose for a loose ball. His defense and rebounding were his strengths but he caught between two positions to be really good at either of them being slightly too short (and light) to be a prolific rebounder and not quick enough to be a prolific defender. Ultimately, I'm sad to see Daow go but I won't miss him whenever the season eventually starts up again. He probably saw the writing on the wall knowing he was going to see his minutes drop as a senior (or, maybe he's doing us all a favor by leaving as we all know Monty liked him...and tbh, he's a likable guy who works his arse off every game...he's just no where close to a difference maker and just cluttered up the roster). Out of high school, Daow had offers from NIU, Eastern Kentucky, and Montana State. Good luck wherever you land, Gairges.

Now, this very well leaves NIU with a scholarship to use which is an interesting development. They don't have any outstanding offers on the table right now so I wouldn't have any ground to start speculation.

I did a real quick google search and I found a Top 100 JUCO players and of the top 100, two of them have not transferred yet. Without going in to any detail (I may a little later), they are (take the rankings for what they're worth...):

67. Donchavell Nugent - 6'0" - G - Clarendon College
98. Tom Holland - 6'8" - PF - Palm Beach State

There's also a couple of "Honorable Mentions":
Carlos Curtis - 6'3" - G - Triton College (the same college that produced Dante Thorpe and currently has Austin Richie....which makes me think...he'll have to transfer this year)
Christian Guess - 6'6" - Wing - North Idaho College
Damien Dear - 6'0" - PG - Southwest Miss
Devaughn Thomas - 6'6" - Wing - Lamar State
Jalen Finch - 6'1" - PG - Florida Southwestern
Khalil Johnson - 6'8" - F - Shelton State
Silas Love - 6'7" - F - Brunswick CC
Victor Nwagbarocha - 6'3" - G - Highland

Btw, Austin Richie transferred to Tulsa.

Also, in case you were curious. According to this list (again...for what it's worth) they have both Adong Makoui and Tavon Jones listed in the "Honorable Mentions".

The website is http://www.jucorecruiting.com.

MAC Transfer Update:

Drew Lowder - Transferring to Eastern Michigan from Holy Cross - Freshmen - 6'0"- PG - 3* from Pioneer HS (Ann Arbor, MI) - Played 1 season at Holy Cross and as a freshman, Lowder started 6 of 12 games averaging 26.3 minutes and 14.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, and 3.3 apg shooting 43.6% from the field (42% 3PT) and 71.4% FT. As a freshman, Lowder will have to sit out this upcoming season. Coming out of high school, Lowder had received other offers from NIU, Ferris State, Central Michigan, Toledo, and Eastern Michigan.

Lowder appears to be a pretty good player and EMU will have him for his junior and senior seasons.

I’m not expecting him to sit out. He’ll argue that COVID caused him to move home.07-coffee3

We get him for 3 years...
