Who would join ODU in a breakaway league?
ODU has been the most vocal about their displeasure with the C-usa’s footprint and travel expenses. If they were to lead the charge for a breakaway league who would follow?

Is there anyone that might want to come but be rejected? (Liberty, Coastal Carolina)

Who are the most valuable members of C-USA? Who are the least valuable?

If you answer that, it would tell you a lot of the answer.

That would be a nice compact league with regional interest.

I think you're more likely to see independence viewed as a potentially viable option than you are a full-on new league formed.

Nobody will join ODU in leaving CUSA, if the exit fee is about $7 million, as this thread -- https://csnbbs.com/thread-897593.html -- says it is.

I don't think Charlotte would join that league. Charlotte wants higher quality competition. They still remember when they played Louisville and Cincinnati in C-USA.

Neither would FIU & FAU. That wouldn't cut down on travel much for them, and it would be a step down in visibility.

Wow! That would put $42million into the pockets of Rice, LA Tech, North Texas, Charlotte, UTEP, UTSA, MTSU, and WKU! And, with 8 members left, C-USA wouldn't have to expand. Plus, we could each get a larger portion of the CFP money too. Yeah, not going to happen.

I had this talk with a very informed individual about 3-4 years ago. They said there isn’t a specific dollar figure, but simply characterized it (the fee) as “two years’ worth of revenue”. At the time, that was estimated between $3.5m and $4.0 million. Not sure what it would be now, although heaven knows C-USA’s media revenues haven’t increased much since then. But the exit-fee is not exclusively media revenue.

Agree it’s not going to happen, for a hundred different reasons. But even if by some miracle it did happen, the schools that leave C-USA would pay nowhere near $42m. Dream on.

RE: Who would join ODU in a breakaway league?
Delaware
Marshall
JMU
ODU
App. State
Charlotte
Eastern Kentucky
Toledo
Ohio U.
Buffalo
Stony Brook
Towson

That would be a better northeast footprint.

Western Kentucky, Youngstown State, Indiana State and Illinois State could become new MAC members.

Southeast:
UAB
S. Mississippi
Coastal Carolina
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
FIU
FAU
Troy
Middle Tennessee State
Chattanooga
North Carolina A&T
Florida A&M

Gulf Coast:
Jacksonville State
S. Alabama
Jackson State
Arkansas State
La. Tech
La.-Lafayette
Rice
Lamar
Missouri State
UCA
Little Rock
Belmont

Plains Independents:
UTEP
New Mexico State
North Texas
UTSA
La-Monroe
Texas State
UTA
Northern Iowa
North Dakota State
South Dakota State

Those 10 are mainly Independents with scheduling agreements. I could see schools like McNeese State, Sam Houston State, SFAU, Central Oklahoma, West Texas A&M and Midwestern State to join in the future plus UTRGV.

No to Delaware. The only FCS school acceptable to me as an Appalachian fan would be JMU. They would be ready from day 1. Delaware would take too much time to build up.

As a Delaware grad, I think they are fine where they are, but I wonder what they would have to "build up". Very strong Academics. Strong athletic program. I seem to remember a few basketball games this season that Delaware might have beaten JMU.

This 2016 article estimates that the exit fee would be $5.6 million based on projected 2016-17 conference revenues.

But this is a football-centric league we are talking about. Delaware football is not what it used to be.

No argument on the academics or the overall athletic profile.

RE: Who would join ODU in a breakaway league?
My stab at who might have MUTUAL interest:

ODU
Marshall
JMU
Charlotte
App St
GA St
GA Southern
UAB
MTSU
WKU

They take a pass on Liberty unless they need them to get the A-Sun’s autobid. Coastal, USA, and Troy all express interest but are left out.

FAU and FIU I’m torn on. They extend the footprint, require flights, and have paltry local support but south Florida recruiting is valued by a lot of members.

Your legal argument to get out of exit fees is that the members left behind refused to make changes in the conference structure and forcing them to stay caused them financial harm.

The 6 left behind in C-USA can pick and choose who they want to backfield with. They’re best options are:

Texas St
ULL
Ark St
USA
Troy

RE: Who would join ODU in a breakaway league?
Doesn't much matter whether it's $5m or $7m ... paying $5m-$7m to lose your shot at a Tourney autobid for eight years is a pretty steep price to pay.

ODU can keep trying to keep things unsettled so if a regional realignment becomes a possibility, it doesn't fail due to everyone thinking everyone else is happy with the status quo ... but their options on their own at the moment is to stay where they are, go independent, or drop back down.

You aren't going to get 7 to 11 schools saying, "ooh, ODU wants to make a break for it, let me pay $5m to $7m and give up a shot at the Tourney to join them!"

Charlotte isn't going to do something that costs us $7M unless that's going to be paid for by someone else.
