Linssen is a good back to the basket player and I'm sure he will have plenty of options in the portal, or I wouldn't be surprised if he's thinking about turning Pro. I bet he has options in Germany as well. However, this gives us flexibility to slot in a big that fits our style. A Grad transfer that might not be as much as an offensive threat as Linnsen but will be able to run the floor and protect them rim would be ideal. The portal is loaded rn, they should be able to find someone.

How loaded is the portal with players that have immediate eligibility? That’s the question. I’m sure we could very well have one or two bigs the following season. We need bigs that are immediately eligible, and best case scenario would still have at least two years of eligibility like what we just lost. That gives players time to gel and improve vs just hoping for a one-off deal.

I know a lot of folks are looking to spin this as a positive, but I’m not buying that lunch meat. We were already hurting for bigs, and now this puts us further in that hole vs if he didn’t go to the portal we’d only need a complimentary big.

This ain’t good, ideal, or easy to fix.

It depends on how you define success. Losing Linssen hurts AND Linssen isn't the typical big for the system that Keatts/Siddle run. It doesn't require spin for both of those statements to be true, and I suspect that Siddle and Linssen had an open dialog regarding fit. We likely would lean heavily on Linssen next year, out of necessity, but he’d watch Steere and Dodd dominate his minutes his senior season. It’s not ideal for next year, but if feels like y’all are hitting the panic button because we aren’t likely to have a championship caliber roster next season. Siddle is inheriting some talent; but also a 10-22 squad. Of course it’s not an easy fix.

Keatts, year 1 was 18-14, 12-6 in conference. Last year, Northeastern was 6th at 9-9 in CAA play and 17-16 overall. Top 6 in the league is a realistic goal for us next year. We desperately need a big, but immediate availability is a short-sighted goal.

Rebuilding a basketball program isn't easy. When you're coming off 30 wins in 3 seasons, that's what you're doing. We all knew transfers were likely when Siddle got the job. If we don't have an immediately eligible big in a couple of weeks, I'll be concerned. This early in the offseason, I'm going to be optimistic.

I don’t disagree, but even in our best years under Keatts we were hammered on the inside by opposing teams. Hammered. Once teams broke the press we either fouled and put them at the line 20+ times a game or were just flat out beat in the paint. That was with guys like Cacok and Marcus Bryan. I like Dodd a lot and I think he has potential, but he’s closer to a Marcus Bryan than he is Cacok at this point. With Linssen gone now, his backup is freaking Bowen.

I’m not expecting a championship season, but at this rate I’m expecting teams to be be prepping for our press and knowing that we ain’t got a chance to defend once they break it.

Additionally, in a Keatts/Siddle system you have bigs running the floor like guards. I get that. What’s the current plan when Dodd needs some oxygen?

Perhaps some should remember, that Keatts at one point had Gettys, Cacok, and Bryan. That’s three bigs to rotate through as the run and gun style wore them out.

The current roster without bigs isn’t optimal. That was a major hit on McGrath and rightfully so. He put us in this hole. Now, we’re further in a hole and there’s not a ton of options out there.

At this rate we darn sure won’t have a championship season next year and a .500 season becomes less likely as well.

Size matters.

My optimism died last season. Optimism is okay in doses but it’s not an optimal spot to live out of. It’s unrealistic.

Yes, we knew there would be transfers. We ALL also have discussed at length how not recruiting bigs was a travesty and a huge contributing factor in those “30 wins in 3 seasons”.

Turning a blind eye to reality in hopes we find eligible bigs as another one just left the program is fan malpractice, IMO. The reason I say that is because of the fact for last few seasons THAT specifically was a major factor in the angst around here.

I’m not saying Siddle can’t overcome it. I’m saying it’s not a good spot to be in at all. I’d be more comfortable with some of our other guards hitting the portal because that is what he’s been recruiting heavily. I’m not comfortable at all with bigs transferring because we don’t have a huge pool of candidates to fill the holes with and we were already behind the curve.

If we have a season? LOL it's 6 months away. Curve is already flattening. let's not put this stuff in writing way too premature.

CG agree with everything you have said in it's entirety.
Benefit of the doubt is earned. CB never earned it and many around here complained about lack of bigs relentlessly. Admittedly, i was one of them. But, I'm also consistent in raising that concern now where many of you are not. Just because it's Siddle, and he's connected to Keatts doesn't mean he gets a pass. He hasn't shown us anything yet as our HC. Another immediately eligible big(or 2) in the fold the next week or two i'll feel much better.

Also, I don't feel we are giving Marty enough credit, if CJ and Bryan could play in that system, so could he.

CB recruited fairly well. Who Siddle did or didn't recruit at State doesn't do him a damn bit of good at UNCW.

C.B. had a whole year to recruit a big knowing Cacok and O’Connell were graduating. Siddle’s had weeks. I gave C.B. the benefit of the doubt a year ago because I thought he was going to start pressing more, didn’t happen. They’re going to find a big. If it weren’t for covid this would be the first day of the basketball offseason. Just have some patience.

He most likely will have to sit next season. But technically he is a 2020 recruit.

He recruited a few nice players, but lost a lot of recruiting battles too. Let's face it, a few of the players we hoped would develop here turned out to be D-II caliber.

Siddle is a far superior recruiter. It's his calling card. He wouldn't be the HC here without that ability. Burke would be the HC.

CB recruited many of the guys we are hoping stick around. Recruiting wasn't his issue, development of them? Now that's a different story. Which is ironic, his mentor is very good at both those aspects of coaching.

Something for successful mid-major players to consider before jumping at a P5 offer (Cylla quoted and referenced).Even though the message is pretty well understood, its hard to convince a 20-yo that staying is their best option sometimes.

interesting article. Also interesting to look at CJ Bryce as well. He was still a nice player at State but his numbers definitely regressed, and were not nearly what we all know they would have been had he stayed.

Interesting read. Maybe articles like this getting out there will cause players to rethink leaving their programs.

In Cylla’s case, he absolutely made a poor decision. In the article he’s quoted as saying he thought he was going to be a starter and that’s why he chose Arkansas. How many of the mid major players are fed lines of BS from P5 coaches looking to stock their bench and kill a 2nd bird with one stone by stealing mid major talent?

Makes you feel sympathy for some of them, but you have to think that someone, somewhere told them that kind of a thing was a possibility but they didn’t heed the advice.

Very interesting read. Especially given that not only Cylla but W&M's Justin Pierce were both quoted a lot.

Pierce took a few shots at W&M, it seems. Like this quote: “Things just move so fast,” Pierce said. “It’s hard trying to grasp everything, especially at a place like North Carolina where they don’t just roll the ball out.”

I am surprised Pierce wasn't used more, given how bad UNC was.

I don’t read that as Pierce taking shots at WM’s style of play, but rather a defense of RoY Williams and Carolina. Roy is often accused of such... even on this msg board. Keep in mind Pierce left WM because Shaver was fried, the articles stated such.

I was glad to see that Cylla didn’t take any shots at UNCW. I think both realized they were sold a bill of goods that didn’t pan out quite as they had thought they would. Difference being Pierce had an opportunity to play at a legendary school, albeit on a terrible team. Otherwise it seems he may have regretted his decision just as much as it seems Cylla did.

Well he was killing UNCW when he played so it worked out best. Inefficient scorer that didn’t look to do much else it seemed. Seemed like a good guy though.
