Sorry if I offended you. However, at the pace they are rushing through this, I don’t expect a vaccine to do much more than make people feel better about dealing with this.

I’d love to be wrong, but you have to be realistic about these things.

Really hope this was an intentional Logan Ninefingers reference.
Right ya are.

Yep, exactly what I was referring to. Again didn't want to get too far off topic but just wanted to point out that the #1 correlation to virus outbreaks appears to be the health of the population and being healthier would have dramatic benefits for all types of common disease in the US.

I don't think it's ignored. People got all up in arms about Michelle Obama's healthy meals initiatives but those were about addressing the kind of issues you're talking about.

I also agree there are a lot of for profit Healthcare issues that stand in the way.

The other thing is health issues largely caused by long term choices are always different than a virus that can be spread quickly and easily.

Consider the US's percent of its population to be obese...

36.2%

We are alone at the top of the world on this when you factor in our population. More of us need to get off our asses and eat better. Would do a world of difference for our overall health in this country. FWIW, China's rate is 6.20% and India's 3.90%.

List of obesity rates by nation

Could this be the only country in the world where a high percentage of low income individuals are obese? I would argue that in countries like China and India their poor are starving.

Why are such calorie dense unhealthy foods so cheap, while produce and low calorie foods are so expensive?

Fast foods and highly processed foods are relatively cheap to make because they are loaded up for one thing, and one thing only - a quick return on taste to brings folks back for more and more and more. I listed China and India just to show an extreme comparison. I traveled to India on a missions trip and while I did see some examples of "starvation" I saw more skinny folks riding their motorcycles and scooters everywhere and functioning in their society just fine. It's the access to food choices and the cultural diet that play the biggest factors IMO.

Her food was crap. We used to be able to eat more calories as kids because we played games and sports. Few kids were fat. All summer we swam, played baseball, stick play, street football. In school we had gym and played sports. I walk 3 miles to HS and back. Input v outputs.

The SNAP card could be made to force healthy SKU foods but no one has the balls to do that. The program could incentivize healthy by reducing SNAP amount only 75% on healthy items.

All socio-economic groups have access to a wide variety of food choices in the US as compared to other countries.
And exercise is available to everyone via the simple act of getting up off the couch and walking.
Obesity is a lifestyle choice for most.

doss spot on for once. I am all in favor of programs like SNAP, but why in the hell are we subsidizing obesity (which in turn becomes a tax on our healthcare system)?

That is the easiest way to buy votes with other people’s money.

Right ya are.

Folks--whether or not we get a successful vaccine is almost solely dependent on the mutation rate of the virus. Low mutation rate=high likelihood of success, high mutation rate=low probability of success. It's that simple.

We still don't have a vaccine for the common cold...this is a cold virus...draw your conclusions.

Had a M.D. with us on the water today from Massachusetts General Hospital ...she said she’d be happy if the vaccine they are pushing through hits 10-15% effective rate in year #1. Said it is like replicating a constantly changing target and will be like the original shingles vaccine that took 10 years to catch up apparently.

RE: Do you think there will be a 2020 college FB season?
It's really all gonna boil down to how these trends look by decision time/start of the season. On the positive side of the things, new cases, test positivity, and hospitalizations are trending down. One caveat is that the Tracking project has had trouble collecting hospitalization data since the HHS mandate started sending that data to the White House. Additionally, we're still seeing mortality rise back into the 1000s again.

A few weeks ago when case numbers were up and mortality was down, I made some points about how mortality has typically followed cases and hospitalization data by about 3-4 weeks. So if that holds true again, you might start to see mortality level off right around the start of the season.

Then it's a matter of interpretation. Do we look at the numbers and conclude that the worst is behind us? Or do we get cold feet because of what happened the last time we took our foot off the pedal?

Also, you really have to think we're going to hit 200,000 deaths at some point, judging by those trends.
