Premier league officially coming back mid June. Still no firm commitment from any American team sports. This is not a safety issue, it's a greed issue. Besides Germany I think every major Euro league country had more severe outbreaks and are returning earlier by months. Insane.

Christ, people. Relax. The time will come. There's almost no benefit for UC to jump the gun on this.

My guess is the very survival of X as a university depends upon it. We will begin to see the impact of state funding being cut 20-25% at UC. That's a big reduction. The private schools enjoy no such support to begin with. The ones with large endowments (Notre Dame, Georgetown) will weather this storm better than little old X.

The extended shutdown and impending (voluntary) abandonment of on-campus classes at many colleges may change the face of higher education for years to come.

Actually, my daughter is going to grad school this fall, because her full time job doesn't start until January thanks to this virus stuff.

She is getting a part time summer job. If UC goes all online, she can stay at home and get a job through December. If classes are in person, she has to move down there in August.

So UC's decision affects both what she can do for a part time job, and when she has to get an apartment in Cincinnati. So, the sooner she knows what's up, the better she can organize her life.

I understand. Hopefully they can resolve this as soon as possible.

Copied from the AAC but Mike Aresco interview with media in Tampa from a couple days ago:

spring aac meetings just happened, and doing the media rounds after

on the dan tortora show:
skip to the 1:19:20 mark
https://www.facebook.com/77500725/videos...5313621146

-most important note: will seek to extend CCG waiver for a extra year (to make it 3 years)..then will decide

- Mark Emmertt (ncaa head) was involved in our meeting

- tv schedules could be altered (covid impact on the season)- also late nba/other sports could take tv slots

- feels the season will be had, but its almost a certainty some people will be tested positive in the season..how do you handled that? how will it affect the teams strength? what if full teams are in quarantine? we dont know

- building a protocol for how to handle the season headed by tulane (travel, safety protocol etc.)

- no conference wide legislation on how to operate or when to resume

- Olympic sports could go regional only games--eample: ucf baseball would play usf and only other Florida schools --but maintaining rpi is important tho
- no intentions to change revenue sports -- only supported the "G5 relief package" to be a good citizen to the other 4, but even if it did pass had no interest in any of it

- ecu is financial struggling because football funded everything for them and they've struggled. cutting sports was inevitable even without virus. cincy was in the works of cutting soccer for a while even before covid

- not playing football next season is when we'd see a real fallout...majority of league will survive if we play football

- not everyone will be espn+ ready on time

How do they account for contributions which other wise would not be made?

Devil is in the details most likely which I have not seen. Football program gets allocated full fare cost of scholarships (times 85 players, many of those out of state). There are likely many other costs factored in there as well like debt service on Nippert, potentially Varsity Village, etc.

IIRC, that was the year we stopped receiving the BE exit fee money, approximately $7M, which accounts for this variance. The new AAC media deal puts the department right back to where they were prior to the loss of that revenue.

I posted about this when the 2018 financials first came out, but UC football brought in ~$15M In revenue in a year coming off two 4-8 seasons and bad attendance (30,000). Men’s Basketball, OTOH, only brought in $7.5M, despite playing to a basically sold out 5/3rd (11,256/12,012). Two areas of additional revenue brought out by that report was football and women’s hoops. Those will be the sports you will see more investment (men’s hoops will see steady investment, men’s soccer got the axe).

You can keep wishing for it all you like, but UC football is not dropping down to FCS or disbanding altogether. In fact, the university is going to put more money into football.

Yup. As a retired accountant I understand. We both know adding 2 or 3 people into multiple classes costs NOTHING! But it is shown as a cost.

The Enquirer loves their hit pieces on UC athletics. I have little doubt that $7 million is made up for by advertising and student/alumni engagement/pride.

I mean, guys, the University is getting slammed and just furloughed 360 people. Athletics are a tough sell in a normal environment. It's a tougher sell now. That defecit reflects very poorly on the AD, Big East money or not.

We're just 6 years past an $85 million investment in Nippert. Hey Bearcat Nation - sorry, but we're dropping down to FCS competition. LOL.

From the Ohio Auditor a couple years back.

See page 14 for the athletics debt servicing schedule. It’s brutal and that is before The Shoe was redone.

http://www.auditor.state.oh.us/AuditSear...n_NCAA.pdf

Before the Shoe renovation, the first $9,892,595 of revenue this year goes to athletics department capital improvements debt servicing. Look at 2023 and beyond....better be sitting down when you do so.
