RE: 2020 Football Season in question
Here is Johns Hopkins' mini-graphs of confirmed new cases by state (over time). Green is good; red, not.

It seems that NYC area (several international airports) got hit early, WA and CA because of the transmission straight from China.

Now we appear to be a 'secondary' phase of infections where the virus is going to places more lightly hit earlier this year. Now it is becoming worse in Sun Belt states, less so in states previously hit.

The old mantra, "It isn't if, but when..."

RE: 2020 Football Season in question
Active cases in NY State=285,461
Active cases in SEC States=187,122
Approximate Populations(2019):
NY State=19.5 million
SEC States=99.3 million
Almost 15 times the numbers of active cases
per 1 million in population in NY State vs SEC States.

What has happened, quite simply, is that the 'back door (arrivals from Europe)' was left open too long and while the 'front door (CA, WA, etc.)' was closed.

The most logical explanation for the pandemic spread in NYC area is the international airports in the NYC area. Not a lot of international airports in AL, MS, etc.

The problem with the backdoor was alot were affluent US citizens traveling back from Europe.
Dining and shopping trips.

The guidelines will be voted on by the NCAA’s Division I council next Wednesday, June 17, putting in motion three separate stages for college football programs across the country, including Michigan, Michigan State and the state’s three Mid-American Conference schools.

This is going to happen a lot.

How is this all going to work again? I hope it does. I’d like to go to the homecoming game vs. CMU. But I just don’t see it working out.

Cow, I am with you. We won't be at homecoming and that makes me sad.

I am, however, not discouraged by the positives tests of football players. I, to date have not heard of any hospitalizations of said players. More importantly, there have been no fatalities reported either. These are healthy guys who have trained their past ten years for the opportunity to play football their last time and the COVID 19 virus presents little if any health risk to them. Once again I say, let them play.

I agree with you Jerry.

HOU had what 5 or 6 + cases, or say 1 or 2% (depending on the number on campus and tested).

Guess what, if someone grabbed 100 people off the streets in Washtenaw Co. they would probably be at that rate or maybe somewhat higher.

So they isolate until they get 2 negative tests and life goes on.

I'm going to propose an opinion and anyone can disagree with it, no hard feelings on my part as a result.

I live in Michigan, have family in Ohio and follow New York State Covid 19 results on CNN. All three states seem to have incredibly high infection and fatality rates in nursing homes. Deaths, I understand, folks in these facilities are not there because they are incredibly healthy and this virus overwhelms their weakened immune system. Infections, however, are another story. Nursing homes are not high traffic locations like grocery stores, hospitals, gas stations, convenience stores, etc... None of the aforementioned locations have reported a large amount of infections with respect to their employees. I suspect as a result, that many of us have already contracted the virus, the testing has however has been focused on those places where the virus manifests itself into serious issues.

The original "hot spots", NY, New Jersey and Detroit are all seeing a decline in infections and politicians are patting themselves on the back as a result of their lockdowns. Perhaps they are correct, but could it also be that the virus has washed through their regions and is now less communicable?

Jerry, I agree with you.

I have my quote: "If its here today, it will be there tomorrow..." and "It isn't if, but when."

For whatever reasons, some people will be more susceptible to contracting the virus and others less so.

I think it is probably true, but I don't have stats, that a small proportion of folks who engaged in certain sexual practices, needles, etc. say in the 80s,90s, etc. got HIV.

If 100 are at risk (because of these behaviors) why do say 10% or 20% or 30% (or whatever the number is) get the virus and the other do not?

Jerry, one more point: Folks say, quite correctly, that we are a very large country and its hard to extrapolate from NYC to Montana. Obviously, Montana is not a destination for international travelers. It has a very low population density.

So each state (or metropolitan area) needs to be considered separately. No easy, but necessary.

I hear a great deal about the increase in "positive tests". Early in this pandemic you could only get tested if you exhibited symptoms of the virus. That is no longer the case and I am hardly astounded that the positive test rate increased, the more available testing is, the more positive results you will find.

Hospitalizations are another issue to me. The term "bending the curve" assumed a similar number of serious ill citizens, it just spread those burdening the healthcare system over a greater amount of time so as not to overwhelm it. Infections, to a certain degree are welcome, they build the herd immunity. I want to assiduously protect the most vulnerable in our society and let those younger resume their lives.

I'm not sure who you define as 'younger' but I define 'older' as someone whose Medicare card has turned yellow. 03-lmfao

RE: 2020 Football Season in question
BTW, Trump is having an indoor rally this weekend in Tulsa with I think 19K. Masks will be available, but not required.

I joked in a Tweet, that if NIH tried to conduct this as an experiment of the transmission of Covid at an indoor facility with a very large crowd (no social distancing) with inconsistent mask usage, this would be a researcher's dream, BUT the institutional review board (IRB) would not permit it (high risk, no benefit to the 'subjects'.)

After the event this weekend, public health researchers will know a lot more about how Covid spreads indoors without social distancing.

We'll know how dangerous tens of thousand fans at Ford Field, etc.

Yeah. They’re going to try. But just like the Southern states that tried to open up early, it won’t work.

Yeah. They’re going to try. But just like the Southern states that tried to open up early, it won’t work.

My take on what we've seen:

1). NYC area was dealt a bad hand (because of all of the trans Atlantic flights from Europe) and a late start (they were not the first to shut down), but really did a nice job getting it under control.

2). Lot of states who were very aggressive in handling it have it well under control.

3). The other states - they are in trouble.

The MAC is a Midwestern conference so it has a good chance of being less affected by the virus.

The Pac-12 (how about USC, UCLA, ASU, etc.) has some real hot spots. Conferences with teams in Texas or Florida????

The MAC normally practices social distancing at its games 03-shhhh so it will be easier to handle. Limit crowds to say 5 - 7K. Students will show if they are interested (they are young and less concerned than baby boomers).

I think the MAC can handle it. Some of the other conferences?????

WaPo (Washington Post) has an excellent article on the Covid mutation.

Here is one sentence I found very interesting:

"The mutation doesn’t appear to make people sicker, but a growing number of scientists worry that it has made the virus more contagious."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2...rc404=true

I need to re-read and re-read the article...
