RE: 2020 Football Season in question
Honestly it time to talk about a bailout of college sports and other sports on a national level for a one season.

It seems any guess on this subject is pointless. Everyday you hear conflicting things. Over the past few days I've heard the NBA has a plan to be back in 30 or 45 days or something, MLB has a plan to begin by late March, Dr. Fauci has said he thinks sports could be back this summer if done with no crowds.

Then within the same hour you'll hear another two doctors or scientist say no sports for a year.

....who knows.

I understand your points.

However, for college sports, I wonder if he can have college sports without students on campus?

I still maintain from a HEALTH perspective, we could test athletes, coaches and staff, etc. and play before empty (or near empty) stadia or arena.

As I suggested somewhere, we can test all players, coaches, etc. on THURSDAY and play SATURDAY before an empty stadium.

Or we could play before say 5K at EMU with social distancing throughout Rynearson.

This is WORKABLE.

Big thing is that players and staff need to be tested frequently (weekly?) lest someone get infected and we have big time community spread.

The big question is what about B1G, SEC, etc. where ONE game may gross 10 - 15M dollars and what happens if they permit say 20K fans instead of 100K+

P.S. 5K at Rynearson with 'social distancing' might actually look good. Rynearson, with the tarp, seats 22K, so there would be fans nicely spread out across both side of the stadium.

All good points, but the part I don't think makes fans at games feasible is that while you can control where people sit by assigning seat numbers, you can't control concession areas, entrance lines and restrooms. I'm starting to think that non-conference games might be eliminated which would give another month of non-play alllowing for more testing availability and knowledge of this. Hoping I'm wrong as I'm really intrigued to see this team play with all the newcomers and coming off a really good bowl game.

As I have suggested elsewhere, I'd like to see school hands out those face masks and make their wearing mandatory.

Another thought: When CMU comes to Rynearson they can utilize 2x as many buses. Simply have one player per 2-seat seating type arrangement.

I really feel by fall that the MAC could conduct a full 8 game schedule using thoughts in these posts.

I just hope we can keep our OOC games ('cause we need the $$$$$).

Oh I agree 100% with your take. I don't think it will be easy but, as you said, workable.

My point was just I'm over trying to read the tea leaves on it since every time I hear a politician, doctor, or scientist say something that offers hope about sports starting, you get a gut punch from another one an hour later!

It's becoming clear they all have no idea haha!

This. Especially when you consider that the professional players will largely dictate when their leagues resume play. All it will take is a handful of NBA/NFL/MLB players saying they refuse to play until there is a cure, and many more will follow suit. That will leave the NCAA in an awkward position, because why should their players take risks when the pros aren’t?

It will trickle down, and maybe smaller sports like golf can get away with it. But football? No way.

RE: 2020 Football Season in question
I'll try to find it online, but a USA Today article indicates that if there aren't students on campus in fall there will be no CFP.

That, can school get students back on campus, is key. They do NOT want to have college football on campus while there are no students on campus.

It makes it appear that the football team is a pro team playing at a university site, completely independent of the rest of the university.

Some may note that many schools cancel athletic contests if school is canceled.

Great point.

Understand that point, but the corollary point is that the universities and conferences take all practical matters to avoid infection.

I''ve suggested ways in this thread: Testing two days before game day and if any player, coach, staff, official, etc is +, they are out and self-quarantine.

I'm not a science denier but more of a research analyst type: If we hit 1M positive cases (we are around 600K now) and we have 330M people, simple math suggests that within small groups the probability of a + individual is low. The prob of an individual being + is about 1/3 of 1%. It would be very possible EMU could test all 55 (?) who are on the travel squad headed to say K'zoo and all would test negative.

100% testing should reduce the prob. of a + player participating in a game close to 0.

RE: 2020 Football Season in question
I can't see any way the season goes on as scheduled. Schools like EMU need the ticket revenue to survive. Top 25 programs can probably sell some sort of streaming package or find alternate sources of income but smaller schools won't get enough interest. Also, with Title IX in the mix, universities likely can't have football games on campus and cancel say the women's soccer season. The school could also be on the hook for players' medical expenses if they contract the virus through being involved in practices, games, etc.. If you're just looking at it financially it isn't very feasible. If you're the NCAA, where do you draw the line? Only D1 sports?

In terms of health - testing players before games is great and all, but people can have the virus and test negative for a long time or even have a false negative test. The country and world have a long way to go with ramping up testing extensively and researching an effective vaccine/treatment. All of this would have to happen within the next 90 days essentially to have practice starting in early-August.

Pro sports will go on because there is too much money at stake not to.

RE: 2020 Football Season in question
I've read all the comments and this is what I suggest:

1). Follow what the pros do. Most of the issues NCAA schools will face will be relevant to pros (e.g., NBA, MLB, etc.). How does this work out??

I suggest this will be a two phase operation: 1). Getting games played, 2). Opening games to fans.

2). Will colleges and universities have students on campus for fall semester?

3). Can athletes be ready to begin training early August? (no sense having them on campus in July if classes will not begin until Fall semester).

4). If #1 goes well, and #2 is expected to happen, then #3 can begin.

That, can school get students back on campus, is key. They do NOT want to have college football on campus while there are no students on campus.

It makes it appear that the football team is a pro team playing at a university site, completely independent of the rest of the university.

Some may note that many schools cancel athletic contests if school is canceled.

There’s no way students will be on campus this fall without a viable vaccine/treatment/cure. Absolutely no way.

As others have said, no students = no sports.

RE: 2020 Football Season in question
Many incoming freshmen are opting to defer for a semester or a year.

Unlikely that we will return to normal until Spring 2021 with a vaccine in place.

This makes me sad.

If you don't leave here or pay taxes here why does it matter what our governor does? Just curious.

My whole family lives there still. Lots of extended family and friends as well.

ALL very disturbed by what's going on there.

Any other questions?
You're a fvcking clown. Don't come here to start shite and then play dumb when you get called on it.

You're not affiliated with the university anymore anyway. Next.

We should just nickname ourselves the Snowflakes. Few people are more hostile to ideas contrary to their own than the people here.

Proof positive that the nickname Snowflakes is appropriate.
