And finally, here's a link to Matt Bartlett's At the Roost article (posted today), which links to both the ESPN and Duke Chronicle stories: https://attheroost.com/2020/07/06/rice-w...a-langley/

The article's conclusion:

Quote:Langley doesn’t seem to be the type of coach who would jump at just any job. She spent five years at Toledo and seven at Maryland. People matter to her, but so does education.

If just any other Power 5 program came calling, Langley’s adoration of the Rice administration, academics and culture she’s helped build would help the Owls withstand their advances. But Duke, like few others, can rival the academic power Rice wields. That’s not to say Langley would be out the door if or when the Blue Devils come calling, but she might be willing to listen. She’s earned that right.

Rice Athletics had no official comment.

Coincidentally, Bartlett had just posted a glowing assessment of Langley and her achievements on July 1: https://attheroost.com/2020/07/01/rice-w...-to-climb/

Quote:Rice women’s basketball has soared to new heights under head coach Tina Langley. With her at the helm, the future remains bright for the Owls’ program. ... Langely signed a new five-year extension following the 2019-2020 season, keeping her at South Main through 2024. At this point, Langley has done enough to stay at Rice for as long as she would like.

Wonder how much the likely impact of COVID 19 on revenue will impact the ability of the P5 to offer high salaries to lure coaches from the G5 realm?

Duke is in talks with Boston Celtics assistant coach and former WNBA All-Star Kara Lawson to take over as coach of its women's basketball program, a source told ESPN on Friday.

Nolan Wilson returns to the staff as an assistant coach after a brief stint with the Mavericks. Looks like Winston Gandy made the move to the new Duke WBB staff. If I'm being honest, I don't know much about the roles each of the assistants have for the WBB team. I've always got the impression that Adudell and King (and Langley) were the recruiters, but I guess time will tell.

Langley was also named to the Top 100 Most Influential People in WBB recently. There are a fair few head coaches on the list, and the publisher isn't a group I'd heard of before, but still a pretty cool honor. Doesn't hurt.

As I just posted in the WBB recruiting thread, new assistant coach in Steven Asher. Looks like Lee Aduddell is leaving, but I'm not sure where to. She's been at Rice since the 16-17 season, Langley's second year.

Also looks like both Chrisman and Alao aren't on the 2020-2021 roster.

Was waiting for the roster to be updated. Alao graduated and is pursuing a PhD at Florida. Not surprised by Chrisman as her playing time has gone down with Mulkey coming in and Ellig getting healthy. Will need McCurry to finally step up.

Yeah, and I'm not overly confident that McCurry can step up and play considerable minutes. Her height obviously hides some flaws, but she hasn't looked solid enough in her first two years for anything but sporadic minutes. I'd imagine that we'll play as one of the slowest teams in the country to help Mulkey play as many minutes as possible. Elig is a considerable drop-off defensively, and there are already some questions on that side of the floor with Erica gone.

Erica moved on and made the Top 30 honorees list for NCAA Woman of the Year. 605 were nominated and the top 30 includes 10 individuals from each division. Next round will narrow it down to 3 from each division and will be announced mid-October.

Rice hosts UAB (2 games), LA Tech (2 games) and WKU (2 games). On the road at ODU (2 games) and Marshall (2 games). 1 and 1 with UNT. Avoid MTSU.

Assuming UTEP, UTSA and Southern Miss will be the other 3 on the schedule.

Seems that Rice has an "easier" schedule than the other top teams.

Schwartz has the potential to make the all-conference team. She'll likley see an increase in scoring plays.

Not surprising that we're not picked to win the conference given the departure of Erica. However, I fully expect Schwartz and, especially, Wiggins to step up offensively. Let's not forget that Sydne was an offensive powerhouse in high school. The key, of course, is keeping Nancy healthy.

ESPN's mid major predictions:
Quote:What is the best mid-major conference race?
Middle Tennessee and Rice could be a rugged two-team race in Conference USA. And if BYU can challenge Gonzaga, the West Coast Conference could be interesting.

But more is better, and that's why I'm going with the MAC and what should be a race to the final weekend of the regular season.

RE: WBB Offseason Thread
The big question for Mulkey will be how teams play her without Erica also on the court. I imagine we'll still see teams gameplan to take away her strengths on defense, which means a lot of threes and a lot of midrange.

But I think what Mulkey needs to be working on is actually her passing and decision-making. Teams are going to try to deny her the ball as much as possible and, when she does get touches, probably send as many doubles as possible. We're still going to want her to get 15+ shots up per game, but if teams crash on her every time she gets the ball, she's going to have plenty of opportunity for assists.

IMO, the 3 keys to the season:

1. Nancy staying healthy throughout.

2. Wiggins, Schwartz and Crosthwait stepping up offensively and, especially from the outside (as that will preclude teams from collapsing on Nancy at the post). The double teaming of Erica last year made it relatively easy to pass into Nancy. It's likely to be MUCH more difficult this year unless/until we establish the outside shooting game.

3. Continued improvement from Nancy with regards to rebounding and offensive efficiency. The wrist injury clearly hampered her rebounding last year. She needs to stop rushing her shot when she gets the ball down low.

I suspect the defense will continue to be our strong suit. Losing Erica hurts, but it's Coach Langley's system and emphasis....and Smith, Wiggins, Schwartz and Mulkey are all strong defenders.
