Awesome!

It’s such a cool area. Wish I would have known about the college here when I was a kid. We spend a week up here every summer.. will be back for the fall colors this year, too.

If you don't love snow, I'd suggest going up to Marquette in late January before you go to school there 03-lmfao

Porcupine Mountains have some incredible fall hiking trails if you've never been (my favorite for Michigan tree color honestly), and Houghton has a nice little downtown area not too far away. Both about an hour and a half away from Marquette to the west.

I’d have been all in.

Wish I could pick my place up from Elk Lake and transport it here.

The Upper area has a short season of nice. Daughter had a full scholarship to N MI. I told her see the two students walking by the lake in the brochure with big sweaters? Must be 4th of July.

Took the scholarship to OU.

Love Mackinac Island in early fall.

At my place on the 45th parallel winter wraps up and leaves by mid April and stays that way through mid November. We love that. It’s not that much different here in the UP in terms of time. They get more winter than we do in volume but that’s ok with me, too. Love winter sports and outdoor activities. After living in Cincinnati for so long I forgot that winter could actually be winter.

The Thumb at Port Huron is a pretty cool place. Where my wife’s mom’s family has 150 year old roots. Cheboygan state park is pretty nice. Bay City has some great corners to search out. Other than that, the tried and true Mackinaw (which as a Michigan resident I’m sorta ashamed to say I’ve never been to other than driving back and forth over the bridge). I’d like to check out the rebuilt 1700’s Mackinaw Fort on the north shore of the lower peninsula.

I don’t know many real under the radar Huron hangouts. I tend to stay on the north west side of the tip of the mitt and the UP

Speaking of the northern mitt area...many great memories of family trips to Black Lake over several consecutive summers. Fished a lot with my dad and grandfather there. Perch, Walleye and Northern Pike were the staples. This would've been in the late 70s and at that time the lake was crystal clear water. Also did some fly fishing in surrounding streams for brown and rainbow trout. A lot of wildlife in the area including Black Bears. I believe Onaway was the nearest town from where we stayed in cabins. I remember driving over the Mackinaw Bridge once - the "golden gate" of the north. Never had an opportunity to explore the UP. Maybe one day...

Still get a lot of perch and walleye, but been awhile since I've had a good pike. Gets my mouth watering just thinking about it.

For anyone who wants an absolutely phenomenal experience, check out Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

https://www.michigan.org/property/tahqua...state-park

Not far from the north side of the Mackinaw Bridge.

Huge old growth forest with incredible trails that feel centuries away from civilization...the lower and upper falls and the Taquamenon River Gorge are astounding....the land of Longfellow’s Song of Hiawatha...they even have a very nice private brewery and restaurant located in the parking area of the upper falls. There is an interesting story about how that came about dating to the 1940’s when the falls were still inaccessible to the public.

Public health officials are pretty corrupt.

RE: OT: COVID Check-In
In addition to the beaches of NC, I've really enjoyed living near the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of these days I want to drive the whole route including the portion in Virginia named Skyline Drive. There's so many parks, trails, vistas, quaint towns, and things to see and do along the route that it would take weeks to really tap into the surface of it all. One of the parks we came across years ago when exploring a section of the parkway was Julian Price Park about 20 minutes south and west of Boone, NC.

Dude. Keep 'em coming. Please. Backpacking has been one thing we've maintained our sanity with through this covid craziness. We are always looking for more places to visit.

RE: OT: COVID Check-In
Like rath said, if you're ever planning to visit my neck of the woods give me a shout out and I can recommend some places. Linville Gorge is another great hiking/camping spot. Two on my NC bucket list to still visit are Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Fontana just below the Smoky Mountains National Park. I'll post some more stuff tomorrow, this ol' bird needs to get some shut eye. Chimney Rock...

Chimney Rock is cool. They filmed a lot of The Last of the Mohicans there (the daniel day lewis version).

Appreciate that '92. NC is such a beautiful state. We'll be passing through on the way to Hilton Head on Friday, but hope to get back for a long stay in the near future.

Good work my man.

Towards the end of my college career I went to a wedding in Chapel Hill. Back when I would ask my parents to use their AAA membership to print a triptik. There was a section on the the way home that included the blue ridge parkway, that was a nice drive.
