NMSU Football and Covid19
Will Covid19 hurt NMSU football enough for the short and longterm of the program?

Will the potential of no big payouts potentially hurt NMSU's other sports? I ask this b/c I have seen ppl mention that leagues are looking to only play league games this year possibly.

RE: NMSU Football and Covid19
It’s a great question since we don’t have a conference. Not sure that would be all that fair to the independents unless they allow all independents to play each other. From a logistical point of view, I think that would be a challenge. Especially for someone like a Notre Dame who would be forced to play at places they wouldn’t normally unless they allowed them to play all their games at home. Perhaps some form of revenue sharing could be arranged, but that could prove tough to do. It could also impact NMSU in the sense we would not be able to play a “buy” game that is needed to balance the budget.

There are those speculating cuts to sports, but I’m not sure NMSU could cut anything and stay TitleXI compliant. It’s definitely NOT good, that’s for sure.

I haven’t really thought about it, but how does this affect the non-football schools? I suspect there are some fall sports that would be impacted.

I would have to look

I'd assume the private schools in the WAC would be fine but could cut athletic staff or a sports offering altogether if needed. But its schools like Chicago St that has me worried the most along with the likes of UVU. With a bigger look at those in the Big Sky and Summit that could be hit hard potentially.

I think ND could work something out with their ACC hybrid partnership when it comes to football. I'm not so sure BYU could swing anything like that. So I could see BYU+NMSU+LU+UMASS+UCONN+Army work something out.

RE: NMSU Football and Covid19
Agreed about ND. They are big enough they will find something that suits them. Just thinking out loud, but I wonder if those schools that are in a conference have 6 games (as an example), that they might exempt the Indy schools to find someone to fill up to a 6 or 7 game schedule. That might open up the opportunity to play a “buy” game to allow smaller budget schools to balance budgets.

There are a lot of ways I suppose it could go. If we can’t have at least one “buy” game, it will affect our budget negatively for the year.

GO AGGIES!!!!

I understand the sentiment. AGGIE basketball has been and will continue to be my favorite sport. That said, I do care about football so far as how they impact the overall budget.

GO AGGIES!!!!

RE: NMSU Football and Covid19
The only reason I care about football is what Indy is saying. Money games keep our entire athletic budget afloat. Don't get me wrong. The year we went to the bowl game was great. But reality is even that year football wasn't good. UNM and Utep were absolutely horrible that year and NMSU did not beat one team with a winning record. Even Utah State ended up 6-7 after we beat them. I wonder if any other team in history has gone to a bowl game, won it, and every win was vs a team with a losing record. With the talent we had NMSU should have won 10 games but Doug Martin is a horrible horrible coach. He's our Dan Majerle but unlike GCU fans who thought Majerle was a demigod most of the NMSU fans do not like Martin.

Not to get off subject but Dan Majerle is a huge part of PHX sports before he got to GCU so it would be like if a New Mexico chile was coaching NMSU football or something along those lines. Ppl would give anyone who has done or has been a part of something good/great that has benefited the city a lot of rope. Also Martin wishes he had Dan's success.

Schools are not going to be able to adjust their entire schedule on short notice. Schedules are built years in advance and for a good reason. You have to take into account the other team, the venue, other events scheduled for that venue, television rights/viewing, referees, hotels, flights, and a million other things. It's not easy to do. If the season starts late and schools have to play a shortened season, I think they will have to play whatever remains of their pre-existing schedule. If that means one team has 6 conference games and another has 5, so be it.

RE: NMSU Football and Covid19
It will hurt us if we cannot play the entire schedule. The Act of God clause, or whatever its called, will allow for the buy games to avoid having to pay us if we do not play them. We have to work with a new QB and not being able to have spring practice will hurt us, and a lot of other teams as well. No one knows when things will return to normal with the corona virus so there is a chance that no fans will be at the first couple of games.
