Sponsoring 19 sports is extemely difficult to sustain at the G5 level. Look at a few of our conference mates and their lower number of sponsored sports.

Sailing is the most successful sport in our history behind Field Hockey. Doubt it is going to get cut.

If they are that concerned about money get us the heck out of CUSA and create a new Mid-Atlantic based conference and save a ton of travel funds

Sponsoring 19 sports is extemely difficult to sustain at the G5 level. Look at a few of our conference mates and their lower number of sponsored sports.

From the press release:
Quote:With the change, ODU will sponsor 16 NCAA sports, nine for women and seven for men, in addition to the non-NCAA sport of women's and coed sailing. This includes women's volleyball, which will begin its first season at ODU in the fall. NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision programs are required to sponsor at least 16 sports.

So unless you're angling to get ODU to drop to FCS or D2, you're not going to lose any other sports. And we've already established that at least 20 G5 schools have at least 19 teams, which ODU won't reach even with volleyball coming online, so I'm not sure what you're looking for.

Sailing is a sport and ODU does incur a cost to sustain it. Doesn't make a dime off it.

ODU sponsors 18 sports including sailing regardless of affiliation. That's too many.

North Texas sponsors 12
MTSU sponsors 13
La Tech sponsors 14
Houston sponsors 15
UTEP sponsors 14
USM sponsors 15
UTSA sponsors 15
Western Kentucky sponsors 14
FIU sponsors 14
Marshall sponsors 15
Colorado State sponsors 14

Sailing is not an NCAA sanctioned sport. Yes we incur costs but sailing is not going anywhere

How do those schools get away without sponsoring 16 sports.

There is a women's team and a coed team if I recall correctly. We have won women's championships and co-ed championships, I think. I didn't look it up, just trying to remember what I read on the side of old foreman field

Probably track and field without looking.

Cross country, indoor (winter) and outdoor track.

Fire wood Selig he’s been nothing short of an abject disaster and we are a completely and totally rudderless ship.

Lacrosse has tons of potential though with our proximity to the north east. I like having it. Sailing makes a lot of sense also considering our history and location. The only sports that make sense To cut are wrestling and men’s swimming. Sucks, but is how it is. Wrestling was in the MAC not CUSA btw.

Lacrosse will continue to underperform until a new coach is hired. I believe a new coach would do wonders for that team. Rowing is the sport that balances with football (number wise).

Sailing makes absolutely no sense (as far as keeping the team). They bring in very little money and cost a lot to maintain.

Wrestling is gone because of money and no other reason. Now that Covid is hitting hard, I won’t be surprised to see other sports cut

Options are limited as long as we stay in the FBS.

A10 or CAA with football independence? Both leagues will be weary of ODU if conference juggling starts again. Either way, ODU would be a quality add.

UMASS, UCONN and Liberty's independent football schedules aren't any better distance wise than ODU's CUSA schedule.

I don't think ODU will ever return to the FCS.

It is unlikely that UTEP will want to move to the MW. Air Force, CSU and Boise State are potential flight risks to the AAC. We could go on forever with these scenarios so for the time being it's the "CUSA WAY"

This is was bound to happen. People WANTED to be FBS. People WANTED to play big boy football. ODU has never had the finances to be stable in FBS, the writing was on the wall from day 1.

This is the second sport ODU has cut in the last couple of years.

ODU cut women's cross country and replaced it on the sports roster with women's golf circa 2003.

Exactly why I posted what I did. ODU was already on the verge of having to make some tough decisions. State revenues are forecast to decline close to $1B or more. This will impact Higher Ed. funds for sure. Then, add reduction of donations and ticket purchases for sports and this will be a very tough time for Athletics. Sad but this is likely a new trend for the next year or 2.
