This is was bound to happen. People WANTED to be FBS. People WANTED to play big boy football. ODU has never had the finances to be stable in FBS, the writing was on the wall from day 1.

This is the second sport ODU has cut in the last couple of years.

True. But what we joined paid $1million more per year, and had a popular regional rival. This is partially a result of CUSAs (Judy’s) complete incompetence in securing a proper media deal and payout. UTep would be crazy nit to join the MW if given a chance. It’s basically AAC west. I also think FBS independence is preferable because at least you only fly football all across the country (6times at most). Everything else could be in a better, more logical and interesting conference like the A10.

I think you and I are on the same page. Not to scoff at a million bucks, but what does it say to make this desperate decision and cut wrestling just to save a million?
How bad are finances if they couldn't raise that to keep the program? I have never actually followed the sport. However, it seemed that they were pretty successful.
If money is so tight then it's time to depart CUSA where travel expenses must be a nightmare. Plus I feel nothing has gotten better since we joined. Either somehow join a conference that pays well or get regional. I will drive to Newport News and beg the A10 myself unless the AAC is an actual possibility.

I was thinking about CUSA's travel costs as well. Sure, wrestling is in the MAC but how much does it cost to send all of our sports teams halfway across the country every year? We sponsor too many sports to do that. I understand cutting programs is needed but to see one of our longest and regularly successful programs get cut realyl hurts. I was good friends with several wrestlers during my time and they are not happy at all.

I think the issue is we'd have to add another women's sport as well to be title 9 compliant. The original plan was to add softball but we'd have to build a softball field which beyond the cost issue, a softball field would take up a lot of real estate. I'm sure that we could find other women's teams to add but cutting a men's sport would achieve the title 9 requirements and free up funds for other sports.

In the article, it mentions Title IX compliance as a factor. But it doesn't state whether we will be in compliance after adding volleyball and cutting wrestling. Anyone know?

Sponsoring 19 sports is extemely difficult to sustain at the G5 level. Look at a few of our conference mates and their lower number of sponsored sports.

Lacrosse has tons of potential though with our proximity to the north east. I like having it. Sailing makes a lot of sense also considering our history and location. The only sports that make sense To cut are wrestling and men’s swimming. Sucks, but is how it is. Wrestling was in the MAC not CUSA btw.

Lacrosse will continue to underperform until a new coach is hired. I believe a new coach would do wonders for that team. Rowing is the sport that balances with football (number wise).

Sailing makes absolutely no sense (as far as keeping the team). They bring in very little money and cost a lot to maintain.

Wrestling is gone because of money and no other reason. Now that Covid is hitting hard, I won’t be surprised to see other sports cut

I would counter that rowing probably costs more than Sailing. A top shelf 8 man rowing shell costs upwards of $40,000 plus oars. The sailing team uses the same boats for years only having to replace parts and sails. Sailing is also an affluent sport, a lot of wealthy families participate in and support sailing programs.

$40,000 for a dang canoe? You could buy a used center console for that much! haha. Wrong priorities.

We should have added women's bowling (it is an NCAA sport) and put a small alley in Webb during the renovations.

I wonder if everyone that is "really upset" online today about this had attended a match or donated to the wrestling program.

When ODU sports start again, remember how "mad" you are today and go attend a soccer game or a field hockey game. Or at least buy the $25 ticket pack for a sport, even if you can't go.

I don't think the question is whether you can find $1M to keep wrestling alive, but rather can we support basketball and football as much as needed while also spending that $1M, or would the $1M be better allocated to the revenue generating high profile sports.

To me, this puts a bigger target on the whole idea of money in sports...if this lock down continues much longer, I think there will be serious conversations about levels of compensation for coaches and everything. The margins between functioning in the black or the red are too small for a school like ODU. That said, I sure am glad we got the stadium built last year even if it has its shortcomings as a facility.

This is a Title 9 issue plain and simple. It's not CUSA. It's Title 9. If you are in favor of Title 9 than this is the result and has been the result for years. Wrestling programs have been getting axed for years primarily because of Title 9. It's Govt Social Engineering - no other way to explain it. These are the costs. It's a shame. NO Title 9 and ODU has Wrestling - no question. Title 9 is why we have women's rowing. If you like Title 9 and women's rowing - happy days are here. It's not Wood's fault. It's not ODU's fault. It's a quota system.

The study also suggested finding a league with less travel.

RE: ODU Wrestling Done
We bought wrestling voucher book every year and attended quite a few matches. I was pleasantly surprised how well attended matches were. I would say most matches had a larger attendance than most non-ODU CUSA men's basketball games.

To the poster that said that people wanted FBS and wanted big boy football. I beg to disagree. Our circle of influence was just happy to have football. We were perfectly happy playing our natural geographic rivals in the CAA. We liked playing for a championship instead of trying to be excited going to a third or fourth rate bowl. Remember ESPN Game Day has been at JMU twice.

We will NEVER EVER even get a whiff of being on the level of Alabama or Clemson. We won't even be on the level of an ACC team. We would have had just as much support to build a new stadium playing in the CAA.

Not being FCS means less FB scholarships athletes. Correct me if I'm wrong but that would help with Title 9???

The Mac is a very high level wrestling conference. We had four wrestlers qualify for the NCAAs, and we have a coach who is the son of a legitimate wrestling legend.

Yes, I know Billy and I are Granby High School grads. We were indoctrinated to be wrestling fans. But dropping wrestling sucks. We both thought we sold our basketball souls to go "up" (questionable if up is pertinent) to FBS. This is just another example of ODU's collective soul being eaten away.

RE: ODU Wrestling Done
Like I said in earlier post...this was MUCH larger than wrestling. You could expect more cuts and you can expect a total change in how athletics moves forward in a University environment. ODU Athletics is not alone in this. The Academic side is not immune to these impacts. University Administration approaches and management models were due for a change. They were bloated, inefficient, and frankly not focused on their primary purpose. Yes ODU is a lower cost Public University, but that is not enough because we do not have a large endowment that can sustain a University over a period of time. Also, It is going to be even worse for ODU because they have over the years changed to a model that has a MUCH greater reliance on students that need federal and state grants / loans to go to school. I hope our school administrators are looking ahead because an overly heavy reliance of students with loans is NOT going to fly anymore. The State is likely going to freeze all hiring as well. Be prepared for more changes.

Have to get out of this conference, it’s going to sink the department if they don’t.

Also chuckled at comparing the Bball program to Memphis, SDSU and Wichita State.

You don’t actually have to be 100%, as long as the numbers are close. ODU has to make sure that women’s and men’s teams have the same things/same level. For example, had ODU only built a men’s basketball practice facility they would have had to build a women’s as well.

I`ve said these same things so many times to so many people that when I read them here I thought that I might be sleep typing.

The FBS/CUSA choice was the single worst athletic decision ODU has ever made and this wrestling elimination is just more fallout. Hopefully a strong wind will come through the athletic department and blow away the crazy fog that set us on this suicidal path.
