Budding WAC rivalries...
I know GCU desperately wanted to be NMSUs rival but IMO the feel is that idea has died on the vine with the series dominance of NMSU. Here are the teams IMO that have potential to have some fun rivalries in the WAC.

GCU & CBU-The feel is there. CBU wants it and GCU is feeling it. With CBUs close win over GCU at GCU arena I think its happening. Same kind of school to with the religious thing going on.

Tarleton State & UTRGV--Well, they are both in Texas. I would think one of them wants to be the team from Texas thats better than the other one.

Utah Valley & Dixie State-Again, both in the same state. Dixie State seems to have decent fans. Maybe they will wake up the Utah Valley dead fan base to want to be the better team and fan base in the state of Utah.

Seattle-No one. Old powerhouse Seattle and NMSU would have been great rivals in the same conference. Unfortunately Seattle does not inspire anyone to want to be their rival. They play in the worst venue in college basketball and they have a mediocre program

NMSU-No one. NMSU is a long established mid major powerhouse that has done well for decades in whatever conference we have been in. GCUs effort to dethrone us has cost Dan Majerle his job. The Havocs are sending less and less people every year to the Pan Am. The fairly close proximity could have turned this into a rivalry but NMSUs dominance over GCU has killed the aspirations of GCU fans. NMSU is no ones rival in the WAC. UNM and UTEP continue to be our real rivals and will continue to be.

Chicago State-I had to go back and edit this because I forgot Chicago State was in the WAC. Yeah, NO ONE.

I would add that CBU is the new sexier non-profit, something GCU wants to achieve.

I think if any WAC program challenges NMSU for conference championships, they will become our rival.

Oh please. “The worst venue in college basketball”. Have you seen Sacramento States? Chicago State has a nice arena, but you would rather play in that atmosphere or at SU’s temporary home court?

Gonna miss Dan Majerle turning colors and watching his meltdown post game interviews. Heard Chew and Menzies also got canned. GCU is cleaning house.

One of the worst. Im not sure if playing in a giant empty Key Arena or whatever its going to be called is much better than playing in that elementary size school gym that Seattle plays in. Tarletons "Wisdom Gym" is not every impressive either.

Would having a closer WAC school to Seattle help build a rivalry?

So you would rather play in front of 20 people at Chicago St’s Jones Center than 1,000 at the Redhawk Center?

Not unless it’s Portland or Gonzaga. Idaho was nearby, but that’s no rivalry. Takes years or having high stakes involved.

You mean 999? You guys don’t even fill that place up during the year.

RE: Budding WAC rivalries...
Dixie State was a great addition to the conference:

Dixie State & CBU - Rivals in the PacWest conference, they should pick up where they left off. St. George is only 350 miles from Riverside.

Dixie State & GCU - Rivals in the PacWest conference. They should hit it off in the WAC.

Dixie State & Utah Valley - This should be a very good in-state rivalry.

Others:

GCU & NMSU - Right now it does not feel like a rivalry because the Aggies are beating on GCU like a drum. But at some point, they will get their act together, and they are an easy team for fans to dislike.

GCU & CBU - This one is a no brainer. At this year's game in Riverside, every fan in attendance received a "CBU Beat GCU" t-shirt. I brought two home. When CBU beat GCU in Phoenix, they celebrated like they had just won a championship.

Tarleton State & UTRGV - They are both in Texas and the hiring of Billy Gillispie was a home run. He is going to have that team playing well within a few years. On a side note, Gillispie is a Texas State grad, so I will be rooting for him. This will be a rivalry because it is always fun to beat a UT school.

Tarleton State & NMSU - Give it a few years and these teams will not like each other. Gillispie can recruit and his teams play defense. Similar team to UTRGV, but Gillispie will bring in better talent.

Seattle - If they could ever beat Washington, that could become a rivalry. The Redhawks need to get back into the Key Arena, which they will in 2021-2022 when the renovation is complete. Their games with CBU have been "chippy." That may become a rivalry.

Chicago State - UMKC was a rival. They have to beat someone to create a rivalry.

Excellent. I had forgotten Dixie State was in the same conference with CBU and GCU and that they were rivals. Not sure if Tarleton is up for the task of being NMSUs rival. UTRGV fans talking about being a rival to NMSU is adorable.

You keep avoiding the question I keep asking. Would you rather play in front of “999” in Seattle or play in front of 20 people in Chicago? Since they have a better arena - for now.

Seattle U's biggest state rival right now is Eastern Washington and others would be Idaho and Portland as for WAC members it's CBU/GCU/UVU, but UVU was more of a Hayford and Pope rivalry as they both hated each other.

On the surface, I see Tarleton vs UT-RGV being a manufactured rivalry because of the Texas connection. Maybe the UT System vs the A&M System school will play into it. We have no history so it is hard to imagine it right now. Frankly I see OOC match ups against former rival ACU or some of the DFW schools being a bigger draw.

With NMSU being the big dog on the block, I can see Tarleton putting effort into trying to make it a BIG deal game. If Tarleton sends fans, its 6.5 hours to RGV and 8.5 to NMSU. Given the choice, I'd rather go to LC.

DI don't know. UTRGV is still UT system. Could be something considering we're A&M system. Still going to be iffy though.

Don't want to set off a realignment thread, but if Kingsville joined that would probably be a better rivalry both for UTRGV and for Tarleton.

History for us, geography for y'all. Doubt it'd happen but makes sense.

I agree it would be a rivalry for both parties.

Kingsville themselves will not make the jump. They have a proud history but have fallen on lean years. Small enrollment, moneys not there, and facilities need help.

However, a merger of A&M Kingsville and A&M Corpus (within 30 miles of each other) into a single A&M Coastal Bend could make that possible. I would hate to see that merger and they wouldn't be my first choice for Texas expansion, but I could see you guys hating them well enough
