Not sure how you define toughness but Octavius Ellis overcame a lot in his life to have a productive finale at UC.

Ellis is a good addition.

I remember I believe it was the year they had Breakfast with Bob in place of midnight madness and they were introducing the players. When they listed Hicks at 6'6 Bob made a comment about him being 6'4 and being the same height. Hicks surely wasn't 6'6 and if you put the over under at 6'5 he was probably under. Given his senior year he was grinding against 7 ft centers in the BE he earned the top spot on this list for me as far as Shoemaker era guys goes.

Or Ron Allen? Anyone who would tie you up and burn you with a hot coat hanger is not to be trifled with.
In all seriousness, didn't Curtis Bostic also have a black belt in Karate?
I know some may laugh at this, but what about Damon Flint? He played 2-3 years with turf toe. That's as about as painful as it gets. Turf toe ended Jack Lambert's football career.
That would have been Donald Little, not Ronald Allen.
Eric Hicks. The guy ate babies. Pretty sure he was shot in the leg before either his freshman or sophomore season and still came to play.
Hicks and Max were about as intimidating of a front court that you could get.
Found a USA Today article about that:
Quote:CINCINNATI — A Cincinnati basketball recruit shot in the leg early Monday during a fight among high school students was expected at the university Tuesday to start summer classes, a spokesman said.
Doctors who treated Eric Hicks after the shooting in Greensboro, N.C., said he could resume playing basketball in two to four weeks.
Cincinnati coaches have spoken with Hicks and his family, university spokesman Tom Hathaway said Tuesday. The information given to the coaches indicated that Hicks was trying to restore order when he was shot shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, so the university has no plans to discipline him, Hathaway said.
"We were told that Eric was serving in a peacekeeper role, not as an instigator," Hathaway said.
Hicks was shot in the left leg, several inches below the knee. Cincinnati physicians are to examine the injury.
Hicks, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward, had planned to come to the university on Monday for the start of summer-quarter classes, but the shooting forced a delay, Hathaway said.
Greensboro police said Hicks did not cooperate with investigators who wanted information about the shooting.
Hicks, a first-team all-state player from Dudley High School in Greensboro, said that he went to a Greensboro park because of an ongoing feud with other Dudley students, police said.
He was released from a Greensboro hospital Monday.
"I feel lucky," Hicks said.
Derrick Hicks said his brother put himself in the middle of a feud between Dudley students, thinking he had enough clout to bring it to a quick end.
"He was using his name to break up a fight," Derrick Hicks said.

Bob Weisenhan had really sharp elbows. He backed down from no one. There was a player from Duquense (they once were a power) named Rice who was nicknamed "The Beast of the East". Bob's elbows took out 2 teeth of his.

Curtis Bostic and Eric Hicks are probably my top 2. Both were extreme examples of Bearcat tough.

My father told me Weisenhan would come out before games and do pull ups on the back of the basket in old Armory to intimidate players on the other team. I have no idea if true but it adds to the lore.
