They have arguable one of the top coaches in the WAC (from day one) and they are in a talent rich state. However, that is where the rubber needs to hit the road. I realize Tarleton State fans have built up "some" arrogance having a good D2 basketball coach in Lonn Reisman. He is a legend at the D2 level. So, Tarleton fans are used to winning. However, the same can be said about every other D2 school that the WAC has added to its ranks.

I do like that Texan fans have a high opinion (pride) for their program. It makes for an interesting WAC, and the competitive discussions to come. However, to this point, none of the D2 schools have cracked the code on how to topple NMSU. Their is a steep learning curve ahead for Tarleton State. The good thing is they have a head coach who knows what a winning D1 program looks like first hand. Neither Dan Majerle, Rick Croy, or Jon Judkins have experienced winning at that level. With the hiring of Bryce Drew, GCU took a major step in the right direction. As for CBU and Dixie State, they both are relying on successful D2 coaches (their Lonn Reisman) to make their respective programs D1 competitive. Keep in mind, Rick Croy had a 0.820 winning percentage at CBU before joining the WAC. Since then his winning percentage has dropped to a more modest 0.597 in D1 ball. And, Jon Judkins accumulated 551 wins over a 27 year head coaching career; posting a 0.686 winning percentage. Both will be tested by long time D1 coaches on a nightly basis. So far, in his two D1 seasons, Croy has proved worthy. We will see if BCG still has some gas in his tank and if Judkins is over his head in the next two or three season. By then, their respective program's paths will be set.

In the D1 world recruiting and name recognition (School and coach) is everything. Case in point, former UVU coach Mark Pope could not make any progress upending Chris Jans at NMSU. Now that Pope is a BYU, the basketball world loves him. Is Pope a better coach than Jans? Hell NO. But Pope is now at a bigger program which has name recognition and better talent on his roster. I only mention this because BCG has coached at the highest level; where the name on the jersey brought in the best players. Now, will Gillispie need to get back to his coaching roots (as a grinder) at Tarleton State. He will now need to work much hard in the WAC to find good talent. If he can land the right talent, his natural coaching ability will shine; much like Chris Jans has done at NMSU; Jans is a grinder.

Lonn was very specific about why BCG was hired: 1. obviously, recruiting and name recognition, and 2. his experience in the WAC.

Keep in mind, A LOT of successful former P5 coaches have watched the waning years of their coaching careers die at smaller schools... Heck, Cal State Bakersfield Rod Barnes' career (the former coach at Ole Miss) is now on life support. Hopefully, the new scenery of the Big West (with weaker competition) will revive his career one last time. I'm not saying this will happen to Gillispie but building a winning program at the WAC's currently level is much harder than when Gillispie did it in his youth. Back in the days when Gillispie first coached in the WAC, UTEP had name recognition; the only Texas team to win an NCAA National Championship. And, the first school to do it with five black starters. Everyone knows about UTEP. It was much easier to recruit to UTEP (and the Don Haskins Center) than it will be to recruit to Tarleton State (and Wisdom Gym).

No doubt, but from what I've seen, he has zero plans of going after the same type of recruits other WAC schools are targeting. Its almost like he's experimenting with building a fast and scrappy uptempo team, maybe to offset those recruiting challenges, or maybe he thinks that's the special sauce other WAC teams have been missing. Or most likely, its all he can get right now this late in the recruiting game.

1. Basketball, man. Tarleton had a better D2 Basketball program than CBU. Tarleton>CBU Based on what? CBU as a D2 went to the tournament all five years.

2. Tarleton"s budget was actaully $7.8 million, about half of the WAC average of $15 million. We increased our athletic fee for 2020-21 to more than double current budget, should be around $20 mil. You say CBU's is $22.5 mil, without football, I'd love to see it. Please show me. Just started a thread on that topic, check it out. Go to the site below, they have the budgets for every school:

3. Football is coming back to the WAC. What planet have you been on?
When and in what form? There are no formal plans to bring back WAC football at this time, FCS or FBS. If they did have WAC football, it could be a separate conference similar to the MVFC. As of now, football does not exist in the WAC.

4. I'll give you that. Baseball has been on a steady decline. The facilities are bad even by Tarleton standards, which doesn't help. I love Baseball, so it bothers me. I know we just a hired a young new coach that is showing promise. Many hurdles there.

“Billy Clyde tells us he's gonna win now, not 5 years from now, but now”. Once again, someone simply says something so it must be true.

Well since you're hanging on to every word .. the next thing I wrote was....."and I believe him".

And that is what we call an "opinion"

3. Too messy. Much easier to bring in regional full-members

4. That's all I have to say about that.

My last word on this. Tarleton State was D2 from 1994 to 2020. Their first tournament appearance in basketball was 2002. CBU made it all five years they were D2, with an Elite 8 appearance in their last season (2018) at the D2 level.

So CBU and Tarleton were playing D2 Basketball at the same time from 2013 to 2018. If we're going to argue who was the better D2 team, while they were both in D2, everything outside of the years 2013 to 2018 is irrelevant.

During that time frame, Tarleton went to the tournament every year, and so did CBU. Check.

The difference is, during that time frame...

Tarleton made it to (2) Elite 8's and (1) Final 4

And CBU made it to (1) Elite 8

Doesn't get any more clear than that.

Okay, I lied. One more post on this subject. Tarleton joined the D2 level in 1994-95 and made their first NCAA tournament in basketball in 2002. It took seven years to make their first appearance. CBU was there for five years and made it every year. So I think CBU at the D2 level is at least equal in basketball.

I guess the questions are... Is Cal Baptist meteoric rise through the D2 ranks with their multitude of financial investments (facility upgrades) stand as a precursor to how they will perform at the D1 level moving into the future? Or, does Tarleton's storied history of winning at the D2 level under Reisman (the coach) indicate the determination, dedication, and shrewd decision making Reisman (as AD) is willing to make Tarleton State a real factor at the D1 level?

One bad sign for CBU is their AD bolted to an NAIA school in mid-transition. Whereas, I get the impression Tarleton State would need to pry the AD job away from Reisman dead corpse. He is fully invested (emotionally) in making Tarleton State a legit D1 program.

Fair enough. All I wanted was a little Tarleton D2 Basketball respect, as they earned their shot at D1 the hard way: Almost 30 years of grinding and doing more with less. Reisman built it, and I believe BCG will take it to the next level.

Now I am curious to see how BCG will get his Tarleton State program down to 13 scholarship players by August... I count 18 scholarship players and it appears Gillispie is still interested in signing a big man like D'Michael Bellfield...

Gillispies' signees (8)...
Monte Gipson
Caleb Starke
Caleb Golden
Freddy Hicks
Shamir Bogues
Shakur Daniels
Joey Madimba
Heritier Ngalamulume

Reisman's holdovers (10)...
Devin Bethely
Javontae Hopkins
Isaiah Range
Isaiah Boling
Dexter Johnson
Daniel Melvin
Clashon Gaffney
Raimon Burt Jr.
Grey Parrish
Braydon Redd

At least five of Reisman's players must transfer. And, that's only if BCG doesn't sign anymore players for the upcoming season.

The rest of the WAC wonders the same thing about NMSU every year. By your last accounting, Aggies have 4 returning players, 4 redshirts from 2019, and 8 recruits for 2020 (plus two more walk-ons). Are there more leaving we don't know about yet?

Lol Gleadley I have no idea how we do it every year either. Heck we just picked up another recruit yesterday.

Unfortunately accomplishments by a school moving up a lower level tend to get overlooked at by higher level programs. Just the nature of the beast. Imagine if yall were still in the LSC and UMHB was moving up to it. Would you really just expect them to come in and dominate?

Who knows maybe yall continue to build off of the last 30 years and are a homerun addition? Maybe none of that matters because you're at a whole new level? We'll see soon enough!

I just commented on this in the recruiting thread then came over here and saw this. Too funny.

The rest of the WAC wonders the same thing about NMSU every year. By your last accounting, Aggies have 4 returning players, 4 redshirts from 2019, and 8 recruits for 2020 (plus two more walk-ons). Are there more leaving we don't know about yet?

Its cause we're cheaters. Just ask Dan Majerle! LOL!

Never heard of her. 04-cheers
