A very good hire! Billy Gillispie is on the same level as Chris Jans. Although Tarleton State has to wait four seasons without playing in the WAC tournament, Gillispie should have the Texan in the thick of things for a regular season championship.

Wow. This guy is the real deal. Huggeee hire for the WAC. Looking forward to Tarleton State. Looking forward to Dixie State. Will not miss Bakersfield or UMKC.

UMKC hired its current coach too late to benefit the WAC and CSUB coach is on his last legs of being a "supposed" good coach. We traded out Billy Donlon and Rod Barnes for Billy Gillispie and Jon Judkins. I think the WAC made out well in the exchange. Add GCU adds Bryce Drew which I think will prove to be a better coach than Dan Majerle.

Goodness that’s a long time. Hopefully BCG can stay healthy and get them to the dance when they are eligible.

Tarleton state doesn't really have much to lose I guess. Legal trouble, Dwi's, player abuse, and rule breaking have happened at his last 3 schools. Seems like more trouble than he's worth.

There have been some bumps in the road for Gillispie personally and professionally. If he can keep the rest of his path on the straight and narrow for his coaching crescendo, he will take Tarleton State further up the basketball food chain than Lew Hill could possibly do at UTRGV. Gillispie is a legit Power 5 level head coach. I saw it first hand when he showed up at UTEP; turning the Miners around in just two seasons going from 6-24 to 24-8. In his second season Gilliispie brought in three JUCOs which completely turned around UTEP program; Omar Thomas from Panola JC, Filiberto Rivera from Southeastern CC, and Jason Williams from Kilgore JC. Gillispie knows how to recruit the JC ranks and the State of Texas very well. Within three years, he will be rocking the apple cart in the WAC. A good indicator will be the level of talent he draws into Tarleton State right away. I suspect some of his 28-3 Ranger JC roster will follow him to Tarleton State.

When fully committed BCG is one of the best coaches in the country period. It seems like he has been clean for awhile, and for him I hope he stays like that. This is a great hire, this is the hire GCU should have made. BCG could have an instant impact, by recruiting his ex-players at Ranger. The Ranger roster is loaded with D1 talent and some of them P5 talent. He could get the current player to follow him as he has a connection with them but after that who knows? The thing is, he’s going to the lowest level of school that is not eligible for the NCAA. TSU is a mid level D2 basketball program at best that has moved up. Their current roster has ZERO D1 talent on it. Billy will could get that program kickstarted but can he maintain success? At the JUCO level he’s getting the D1 talen coming to them that either needs a little work or have problems. Now he’ll be competing with over 350 schools for recruiting and has nothing really to offer them. Basically he’s trying to build a program from scratch. Other move ups like GCU CBU and Dixie have had success prior to moving up.

So when they made the move up they’re above mid level? I could care less about the last 20 years, it’s about the current state from when you made the move up to your 1st year at D1 level.

They have a storied history in DII basketball. Tarleton State has only been a "mid-level" D2 programs the last three season; two of which were led by Chris Reisman (Lonn Reisman's son). At least Chris Reisman realized early on that the Tarleton State program would be better off in the hands of a more seasoned coach than him; someone with D1 experience. In Billy Gillispie, they found their D1 version of Lonn Reisman. When mentally and emotionally right, Billy Gillispie is an elite coach. He is very much on Chris Jans level. Also, Tarleton State does have D1 talent on their roster if you look closely. There are some players on the Texan roster who can hold their own against "most" the WAC programs; not named NMSU. But I am almost willing to bet Gillispie will rectify their talent gaps soon.

Billy Clyde Gillespie!!! I love, love, love the hire. This is great news. And good on Tarleton for making a splash hire to coincide with their move to D1. I could not have hoped for anything better.

We'll see how good of a recruiter he is from behind a computer screen.

I will miss Bakersfield. I can guarantee that GCU, CBU, Dixie, and Tarleton will not let their basketball programs get to UMKC level. Glad to see the Roos GTFOH. They sucked and will always suck.

Seems like they had some success with that one coach. I think they hit a home run with this hire as Gillispie could get them going in the right direction quickly. He is a top 2 coach in the WAC. My earlier post was just setting traps to see who would take the bait, and it looks like I caught a Rat. It’ll be fun pushing his buttons when the season starts.

Don't think so pard. NMSU is a top tier learning institution. I'm sure Tarleton is even lower than UTEP aka Juarez Tech when it comes to academics. Gonna enjoy spanking your team next year pard!
