Gannett furloughing employees - twitter freaks out
Not sure why they thought they should be immune to the suffering happening literally millions of other places. Their self importance is showing. It was refreshing however to see a good chunk of the replies mentioned needing an honest media, and not opinion peddlers cloaked as journalism.

I guess someone shouldn't have let them buy up so many properties.

yep, they're solely responsible in Memphis for their most direct competitor launching over all their job slashing nonsense when they bought the local paper.

Macy's also announcing most of its employees are being furloughed. Tough times for all.

Is USA TODAY still Gannett’s “flagship”? What else do they do?

it hit 'home' here too...as much as I despise politico biased journos, I have two personal friends impacted due to that bs....both sports writers...

I can't begin to describe how that pissed me the fk off in concern....

#FKWRH ... that fkr started it all...

yes, theyve been routinely acquiring papers and slashing their workforce the last few years. Memphis' paper isn't even printed in Memphis anymore. They print in Jackson, and do most of the copy editing in Nashville in conjunction with the Tennessean, and picking up a bunch of random USAT articles. It's led to the complete opposite of "local news" as one of the writers I posted whined about.

That's exactly what they use the local papers for, to feed content from larger markets.

This is going to add to the TP crisis. Gannett newspapers best use for years has been to wipe your azz with.

1 week a month sounds like its not a bad deal compared to what many people are facing.

Maybe they should learn to code.

Those jobs are never coming back.

A lot of people are going to regret cheering on the shutdown.

I’ve delivered for both the CA prior to the Gannett purchase and USA Today right up to the takeover and I’m not sure the economics of a local print paper work in any form other than what Gannett does.

Very few people actually subscribe to print edition of the CA. USA Today home delivery was minuscule but retail sales were reasonable in some areas when I delivered for them. Neither had enough sales to support a large local footprint. So while it’s nice to ***** a out the local paper not being local anymore, I don’t see how the CA could continue much longer without being bought and the local workforce slashed.

Exactly. I'd take that deal and feel good about it considering what's going on. Anyone that can't live a month on 3 weeks pay isn't doing something right.

Here is one of the responses to wetzel tweet above wanting business:

Wetzel :
Please buy a digital subscription to your local newspaper. Now more than ever reliable, professional local news matters. Social media and cable news networks won't give you that. This is the best we've got. And it's not expensive.

Response:
The clt observer has done a good job reporting on this and the paywall is down for c19 stuff. But their political view s are too far against mine. I don’t agree with them most of the time. That’s the reality and the way many folks feel. What’s your advice?
