RE: Want to get pumped back up?
Watching Syracuse and Georgetown in front of 32,000 fans in the Carrier Dome. Tie game with 4:00 left. Ewing working on a 16/16 double/double. The old Big East was like watching a war zone.

It would be very easy to get very addicted to watching basketball from the old Big East.

Watching Maryland vs. Navy with David Robinson. He was an amazing player even in college. They said he was 6-8 when he entered the Academy, and grew 3 inches while he was there.

Pappy, I'm truly happy you are getting enjoyment out of watching old games. I guess I won't get pumped up until I hear that college basketball will be back in the Fall. I have little hope for college football, but still have my fingers crossed for college basketball. Maybe it can start in December with "March Madness" in April or May.

RE: Want to get pumped back up?
Politically, I don't think they will be able to keep the schools shut down without overwhelming evidence of the need for it. Teachers and parents of pupils are a sizable voting block and the current situation is causing them a great deal of inconvenience. And I suspect a good slice of the population falls into the same category as me: I do not know anyone personally who has had the disease.

So far we have been operating out of fear of what may happen. By August that will have had to change to a fear of what IS happening - and if it isn't happening, folks are going to get upset if they perceive that their right of lawful assembly is being taken away from them on a "maybe."

We are witnessing a very interesting test case of conflicting interests between elected politicians and the medical community. At some point the politicians are going to say, "Phooey on you; I've got to run for re-election."

In the meantime, I'm watching the old Big East, and having a ton of fun doing it.

Let's see. It looks like today it will be Rutgers and George Washington from 1983. (Not Big East, but I'm boning up on Rutgers history, since I am now a fan.)

One thing that is interesting to notice from games of this period is that even though the 3-point line was on the courts, it was not yet omnipresent in the players' thoughts. They would still shoot from the spots where the natural flow of the game took them.

RE: Want to get pumped back up?
You pick up little points about programs as you watch these games. For example, I am watching Rutgers-GW from the 82-83 season, and they just flashed on the screen Rutgers had won 8 games in a row, the most since a 9-game streak in 78-79. Ironically, in this past season they had the longest home court win streak in the country at the RAC.

West Virginia and Geo Washington playing in 1980, and they flash on the screen as a kid named Magid is shooting FTs that he is one of only a handful of graduate students playing college ball. Things have changed.

Later they said he had to sit out a year to make the transfer.

Remember the old Eastern Eight Conference? Forerunner of the current Atlantic 10 (which has more than ten).

Yeah, the Atlantic 10 has 14 teams; the Big 10 has 14 teams; and the Big 12 has 10 teams!

I love seeing the coaches in those 3-piece suits.

RE: Want to get pumped back up?
One benefit of this little project is that I am learning some history. For example, I am watching Duquesne and WV from 1980, The Dukes actually were a pretty good program at one point. Final Four in 1940, another Elite Eight in 1952, won the NIT in 1955, only school to have back-to-back #1 overall picks in the draft. It has been a long time since they had any success, though. Haven't danced since 1977.

Duquesne was good this past year. Record of 21-9 playing in the Atlantic 10. For perspective, Little Rock was 21-10 playing in the Sun Belt.

Then they might actually have danced this year, if there had been a dance.

Watching a 1986 game St. John's at Syracuse. They just flashed on the screen that (at that point in time) the three largest on-campus attendance figures were all 32,000+, and all at the Carrier Dome. That is a lot of folks at a basketball game.

Having great fun. 51 games down. 429 to go. Unless I find some more, which I probably shall.

They may put 32,000 in the Carrier Dome for basketball, but the place is still a dump!

I had rather see St. John's at the Garden, for sure.
