Short-term future of college sports
It's not yet April, but I have serious doubts about the college football season starting up this August. A college football locker room, with a 100 or so players, is a petri dish for the transmission of a virus. Let alone, 80 to 100,000 fans crammed into a stadium. One college football team becomes infected, the whole thing probably shuts down. So if football is cancelled, can college basketball be far behind? Can programs like us survive a year without sports? I really have no idea, but I would think it won't be easy. Maybe not having football, is a blessing, since football supports the rest of the athletic program at many schools.

This scenario (no college sports for the coming year) still seems just a little far-fetched to me at the moment. But, I am starting to believe it is a real possibility. New York will hit it's peak in mid-to-late April, but when will it hit hard in the middle of the country. China managed to limit the spread of the disease (i.e. we already have more total cases then China), but obviously it will hit every corner of our country.

Short term college sports overall is in trouble. The financial hit will be tremendous. The NCAA fathers need to be coming up with a plan to revive the patient once things calm down.

Can schools cover athletic scholarships with no revenue coming in? Can schools, like us, charge an athletic fee when there are no athletes competeing and games being played. I assume pro sports, since they are strictly a business, will come back before college athletics. Will a lot of college basketball players leave to play professionally whether it is here or overseas? Will the better college baseball players simply go to the minor leagues? This whole situation is beyond anything I ever imagined. I guess I never watched Contagion or other movies dealing with pandemics.
