RE: Murphy to return next season
Thanks pointing that out. As Wooden suggested, not what we needed but strong numbers.
I am dismayed to also learn Jalen King will be missing. I thought he came on strong towards the end of the season. Center position is going to be a even more desperate need. Wondering if Murphy has the inside track on someone (or two) which prompted King to want to leave.

Riley, Thompson and Toure have manned the middle throughout Murphy's tenure. We have always had solid post presence with less than thrilling results. That said, could the zone work with Binelli in the middle? He has the size and wingspan. I realize that physically he has none of the talents of our aforementioned centers but is shot blocking or defending a tall center that critical to our defense? Our Achilles heal on defense has always been the high post feed defended by our center followed by the low post pass to the cutter off the wing, something our tall centers can do little about.
Rebounding? The zone reduces personal block outs so we ALWAYS allow the most offensive rebounds in the conference. The zone also encourages three point shots which produce LONG rebounds often procured by the more athletic players instead of those taller players.
Just an idea. I would love a great center but a three point shooter in Binelli in the post with GREAT athletes like Groce and Dillard on the wings does not frighten me.

WMU just hired an assistant from Hawkins’ staff. Sad that this is what the MAC has come to. Can you imagine hiring a Murphy assistant next year? I think I’d end my association with the athletic department.

Pretty disastrous hire. It’s like they didn’t have a contingency plan if they didn’t get Saddi Washington. Or, at least, not a good one.

It’s inexcusable. There are so many excellent coaching prospects at the lower levels who are just looking for a chance.

If I recall correctly, Binelli was used in the middle for short spurts and Sam thought it did not work well. He had previously had a similar thought as you. But perhaps if it was implemented on a more consistent basis rather than temporary and adhoc, Binelli might developer in that role. My concern would be his strength and vertical might allow teams with a larger/stronger center to just keep dumping it down low. It might work during MAC season, but might get killed when playing a power 5 school.

It didn’t work well at all. He was slow to react and didn’t seem to know his responsibilities. Since Murphy is all about drilling in the assignments of the 2-3, my guess is Binelli hadn’t practiced much at the 5. Perhaps with an offseason of knowing he’ll be in the middle will help him, but I still have my doubts.
You hit the nail on the head with his deficiencies, which is why I still think he should only be a 10-15 minute-a-game player, unless he gets hot from three. I still hope Murphy uses the remaining two scholarships on big men, but if he only uses one then that might be a hint that Binelli will be changing positions. At the very least, it likely means more minutes for Dillard, which makes me happy.

I see Binelli more like Max Hooper was at Oakland.
A 6th man off the bench who came in and hopefully got hot from behind the arc.

RE: Murphy to return next season
And that’s how Murphy wanted to use him at the beginning of the season. But by MAC play, for whatever reason, he started and played heavy minutes. With Gibson coming in (who is still an unknown) and King transferring, I imagine moving Binelli to 5 is very much in the realm of possibility.

Sam I am hardly proposing Binelli as the ideal 5, he clearly contains none of the physical abilities our prior post players had. I'm clearly only settling here on the best option available should we not be able to land an athletic big man. Playing him in the center of the zone will force the wings to tighten up as well, allowing more corner jumpers. The good thing there is that the elongation of the three point line resulted last season in a bunch of out-of-bounds calls and long two point attempts from the corner instead of the dreaded three point make.
The advantage of Binelli at the five is 100% offensive dedicated. The guy is a fabulous 3 ball shooter when he has his feet squared to the basket, receives the ball in rhythm and his momentum is towards the goal. Unfortunately because he is 6'10" tall, unlike a Steph Curry he can pretty much release a shot anytime he wants, thus he misses more than he should.
The advantage he brings to EMU is totally on the offensive end of the court. Most teams in the MAC play man to man defense and there are not many centers who can come out and defend Binelli on the three point line. Hopefully I trading two's for threes here.

I hear ya, Jerry. Murphy not using a scholarship on a center this past offseason is really biting him now.
A good way to survive a few minutes with Binelli at the 5 would be to use the full court trap that Murphy likes. I’m hoping we play a bit faster next year.

That’s what this year should have been. Or the year before...
His contract auto renews. It isn't up to Wetherbee. He can't sure tuition dollars to buy him out.

I cannot defend Wetherbee in any way, he seems to be wanting with respect to administrative skills. Announce Murphy is coming back but do you really have to make the comment, "if you haven't won in ten years, maybe you need to do something else". A spot on, fabulously genuine comment that should have been shared ONLY with Rob Murphy and NOT with the news media. Apparently our AD does not realize that potential recruits have access to the news media and does not consider the negative effects of such a comment to the program.
Then again this is the guy who informed us that if he knew EMU was going to have to cut sports, he might not have taken the job. Additionally without HIS extension of Murphy two seasons ago, his dismissal now would have cost EMU nothing. I think the Peter Principle has proven itself here. We have a Men's basketball coach and an Athletic Director punching way beyond their weight class. Neither owns any responsibility for failures.
