Murphy to return next season
Per Tony Paul on twitter, with a quote from Wetherbee. They haven’t had any new contract talks.

No surprise, but now we can remove the speculation.

No surprise. Just hoping he doesn't get an extension.

Just a confirmation of our minor-league status. If you don't have the money to compete at the D-1 level, drop down a level (or two).

Wetherbee is the emptiest of empty suits.

Here's the full quote: "EMU men's basketball coach Rob Murphy will return for a 10th season -- he will be entering the final year of his contract, and there are no current talks on any kind of extension.

"Rob and I have had really good discussions. Rob knows where he's at," AD Scott Wetherbee said."

So we didn't let him go, but that also seems to be a pretty clear "Win 20 games or your finished" statement.

EMU is like a lot of schools - we don't pay guys NOT to coach.

Most schools in D1 don’t do the lame duck thing. Most schools in D2 do.

And you’re missing the point. Who extended Murphy’s contract?

I disagree with this. The vast majority of D1 teams do not allow it to go into a lame duck situation. Either they are hacked or extended. You will only set the program back a year in the long run by allowing what we are doing to happen. Awful move.

We bought out Ramsey’s last year.

This would’ve been a good opportunity for a new coach to rebuild on the fly with a veteran group returning. I can’t help but think Lyke would’ve made a move by now.

I wasn’t the most ardent Lyke enthusiast, but she would have had enough sense not to extend Murphy. And she never did buy into his leadership, which is another point in her favor.

How are you honestly going to fire a coach during the current affairs. It would be tough to 100% be certain a season will start again next year and finish. I feel same way about WMU good luck trying to do a search on zoom.

That is the point indeed! I want to blame Wetherbee but as I recall the Prez took some credit for the schedule the next year which included Duke, Kansas and other payday games. Both signed off on the contract extension.

Many other schools are currently hiring, so it’s not impossible. UIC, for example, just hired former UM assistant Luke Yaklich. COVID is not the reason WMU doesn’t have it together.

Indeed, very clear message to Murphy:
“If you haven't won in 10 years, maybe you need to do something else."

Both sides are f-ing lame. Weatherbee for trotting out a lame duck coach. Murphy for not manning up and resigning. Get the hint dude, you are just stealing money for one year because EMU is saying they don't want you around.

Why would Murphy resign? That’s silly. His job is to coach until his supervisor tells him not to. It’s entirely on Wetherbee and the school to move on. They are taking the cheap way out, which tells us all we need to know about wanting to field a competitive basketball program.

RE: Murphy to return next season
I really think a 10th year is reasonable. I am not advocating for Murphy, nor claiming he has been successful by any means/standards. But he has not been a disaster by any means either.

I think he has been consistently good in OOC over his time here with a couple big ten wins and consistently competing with top mid-majors. This is offset with the excessively dismal performances against the elite teams. (I am disregarding/omitting lower division games in my conclusion here..)

In the MAC he has been consistently and frustratingly mediocre hovering around 0.500 every year. Though he is trending downward last couple years being in the bottom 4 last year, and losing in the first round of MAC tourney 2 years ago. So the writing is on the wall. Win next year or you are gone.

I understand Sam’s point though that logistically speaking it makes sense to replace him this year since there is so much talent coming back for a new coach to utilize on first year. Since they are graduating the new coach can recruit the type of players he wants for the next year while showcasing a reasonably successful team. Instead, we will have no players by the time EMU brings in a new coach, and his initial recruiting will be difficult as he is trying to sell a program that is losing. It is unfortunate that we can’t make the most of the situation/circumstances. But I don’t think that giving Murphy a 10th year is in itself unreasonable. He has kind of earned it.

RE: Murphy to return next season
My biggest concern is with all the talent coming back, we win all those close losses last year, and we win 20 games, and Murphy gets a one year extension! That could mean another one year of life....... next year we've 4 starters back, and Murphy will land some big time grad transfer, or above average JUCO, and then the saga might continue!

One big question: Will a Murphy-coached team ever win the MAC??? Based on history the answer is a clear NO. This saga needs to end and the sooner the better.

If there's a new coach in 2021 he will be able to offer a lot of playing time to recruits. That will help.

Good point. I was thinking that the other day. The new coach will be able to bring in "his guys" right away, which may not be a bad thing.
