That actually might be a relatively good time for the game. It's a saturday which'll help everyone. It's also on the "first day of exams", which might seem bad but not a ton of exams are going to happen on that first saturday; and if it looks like it's going to be a good game, I could see most students being able to take a few hours off studying to enjoy their saturday night a bit.

I guess that'll depend on whether the academic schedule is adjusted this fall (do they try to get exams done earlier to avoid a second wave? are all classes online for the falls semester?)

Something that hasn't come up in all of this: Let's say that the upcoming season is not played with fans. Could ODU negotiate a deal where they take a year off from the series and push the other games back a season so that they host VCU in 2021 and travel there in 2022? Because it would be rotten luck for ODU to have what would normally be their biggest crowd of the season zeroed out because of the pandemic, then turn around and play VCU in front of a full house the next season.

Add a couple of MEAC buy games at home, and that has the makings of a good OOC schedule.

Arent those tournaments the best way to get P5s on a neutral court? Its been a while since we've had one come to the Ted too. I do like the way next season's OOC schedule is looking so far though. At Ark, at JMU and at Richmond will be tough, but if we are going to be as good next season as a lot of us hope, those are the types of games we need to win. At least we have the sheep at home. Gotta win that one.

Don't mean to nitpick but @JMU will not be tough. Just because they beat us last year does not mean they are good. They finished 311 in kenpom this year and are losing two of their best players to the transfer portal.

New coach so maybe jmu will have an offensive game plan desides somebody chuck it next year.

The ‘chuck it’ approach was effective against us.

Hopefully they would just push both the football and basketball seasons back a year. Can you imagine the year ODU gets two ACC teams at home in football and the season gets canceled?! Surely they'd have to reschedule or at least pay the buy out.

"Annual MEAC game @ Home"

IMO, if we do go that route, it should be Norfolk State. That game would be intense and close to a sellout perhaps and would be exciting. OR, we go Maryland Eastern Shore route and have the annual 4,500- to 5,000 fans in attendance for that one.

Usually that UMES game is played during winter break, which is why scheduling the worst home opponent during that time actually makes sense.

I’m sure because it is most definitely a signal their program is declining. VCU finally made a mediocre hire. Tick, tick, tick Rhoades.

Why does it have to be a MEAC school??? What about "buying" Longwood or Radford...?

Anyone have any insight to this? Does this mean that the multi team event does NOT have to be an exempt event? Of interest to me is the option to schedule 29 games with a multi-team event involving 2 games. This sounds like the death of the Paradise Jam and the like at least for P5 school participation. They could host a multi-team event for 2 games over a weekend and then go play a neutral site game against whoever they want, wherever and whenever they want - TV would love those games. If the multi-team event still has to be EXEMPT then that would mean they could only host a tournament once every 4 years and tournaments like the Paradise Jam won't die... (unless they have already changed the 4 year scheduling rules recently too). Right now, you can play upto 4 exempt tournament games - which schools use two of them to host teams if that is what the tournament format is.

BTW - for those of you counting - the last time I checked on the scheduling rules a couple of years ago, if we are not playing in an exempt tournament this year, then your total allotment of games is 29 (plus a conference tournament), which is 11 non-conference games... (If you play in an exempt event, you get 28 games with the exempt event (up to 4 games) only counting as only one game against your 28 total.)

ODU usually buys at least two teams every year. They don't just buy MEAC schools. Last year they bought UMES and Loyola (Md.). In 2018-19, it was Navy and Morgan State. In 2017-18, Bowling Green and UMES (Norfolk State was at Scope, but I think technically an ODU home game?)

Most of the P6 programs (and certainly the top-end ones) are still going to want to play the premier tournaments, like Maui and Atlantis and PK85 in 2022. I don't know that there'd be that much interest in hosting a four-team tournament, since a) they're not going to get Maui/Atlantis-level teams to play on another team's court unless it's part of a home-and-home, and b) those trips are a perk for players and boosters. Kentucky's playing Richmond and Detroit Mercy as part of a round-robin it's hosting this season, but I think that's a non-exempt thing so every game counts toward the 28/29.

As for the mid-majors and below, I suspect a lot of them are going to want to play the three-game events because scheduling decent teams gets harder and harder. If they play a two-game event, that extra date is as likely to go to a buy game against a better program or a home game with a non-D1 program.

You'll see more two-game events but not so much that I think it dramatically changes how early-season tournaments are run. Probably a couple of fringe ones cut from eight teams to four, or possibly a four-team round-robin with best record winning the title.

Well, Radford would probably have beaten us last season... thats worse than JMU and Liberty beating us (I know, LU was football).

Regarding the VCU transfer... I really like our chances against them next season at home. We have a veteran team, and they've got a lot of new faces and lose most of their scoring. Im sure they're reloading, but this is a year where ODU should actually be favored. Time to whoop those Rams butt again.
