Athletic Department Power Index for the AAC

UC ranked #2 overall behind UCF. I was a bit surprised to see us ranked as high as we were with donor support, as I have seen different metrics to suggest we are further behind some other members of the conference in that category. Disagree Houston has better facilities than we do.

I don't agree about the facilities either, but Houston does have great facilities now. SMU at #4 is a bit surprising. I would definitely put Memphis ahead of them. I consider UC, UCF, Memphis, and Houston to be the most valuable AAC properties.

I think Memphis gets knocked down a peg in this poll because both of their revenue sport arenas are not on campus and exclusive to the university. That being said SMU has a lot going for it as well. The money that gets flowed into that university is pretty substantial, can't remember which list it was but SMU earned the largest amount of revenue in 2018-19, mostly due to the sizable amount of money given by corporations and alums.

I do agree with your list of most valuable properties. It would not be a bad move for the Big 12 to swoop up those four schools to expand to 14, but bias and greed will never allow them to do so.

Bolded, I agree and actually in that order. To me, even though Memphis uses an NBA arena, it's a terrific venue and they get big crowds of rabid fans. They did a pretty good job of filling the Liberty Bowl this past year too. Houston's teams do well but their lack of fan support remains a problem for a P5 aspirant.

UCF #1 in "brand perception"???

No way. They're still trying to shake the "directional" school persona. No way they're the top "brand" in the AAC.

I'd think a case could be made for UConn to be the top "brand". They certainly have good name recognition with all those years in the Big East and winning several national titles in basketball.

I agree. Recency Effect for some writers following a couple of splendid football seasons. Cincy and UCONN are far and away more recognizable nationally. Unlike UCF, both have legitimate national championship titles.

What constitutes “Quality of Life” and why are we #4 in that category? Otherwise we are in the top 2 in all categories but 2 other 3rd place finishes.

Yeah, and no one in their right mind puts Orlando ahead of Tampa in "quality of life" unless they work for Disney.

And this is Northern Orlando. The campus and surrounding area is completely sterile. When we asked some UCF fans where to go around campus for a good meal they said Bar Louie. I'm not sure the term 'local' exists there. But the winters are better there.

Didn't donor support just renovate Nippert Stadium and the Shoe to the tune of $160 million or so?

Nothing says big time like UH having a basketball arena seating 7,100

Correct. And between the ambiance of Nippert and the amenities of 5th/3rd it's hard to top our two major venues. Institutionally, UC's endowment is the largest in the conference, at least among the public universities. There is room to grow in athletic support but the trend line is pretty good; facilities and results on field and court are even better.

I also appreciated the comment earlier about the area around UCF. I haven't been to that campus--haven't been to Orlando in years either. But we now have a village of sorts around our campus with many options for food, beverage, shopping and housing. That should mean a lot to prospective students.
