WBB Coaching Search for Villanova
https://huntscanlon.com/parker-executive...niversity/

I did a google search to find out the status on Villanova's WBB coaching search. Apparently it's not so cut and dry that Nova would just be swiping Denise from Drexel. If Nova is hiring a search firm, then they're probably looking at many options. As I had mentioned before, Denise has a very long term contract with Drexel so it might not be so easy, or even worth it financially, to just take her from Drexel.

if they haven't hired her by now i would tell them to stick it if i was coach dillon. maybe she turned them down though. who knows. i can't imagine there's a reporter interested in looking into this...although i guess there isn't much else sports wise to dig into.

RE: WBB Coaching Search for Villanova
My thinking is that it would be too expensive for Villanova to buy out the remainder of her contract from Drexel. I know that Villanova has the money, but they may not want to pay out a few hundred grand to Drexel if they don't have to if there's another coach that they might also want to consider. They are also are a school that has a huge gap of interest between their men's and women's basketball programs. Going back to the debate that we had with a certain JMU fan a few weeks ago, Villanova plays in a major metropolitan market where major men's college basketball is big, but women's college basketball has very little market interest. They may not want to spend big on a WBB coach when there's minimal interest in the program.

Other than hearsay, there's no concrete evidence that Villanova was ever seriously considering her for the job.

I think any school is wise to keep your options open and use a search firm. You never know what you will find. From Nova's perspective, Denise is still young which helps the cause of keeping her around a long time (like their previous coach), so whatever our buyout is, likely is not a deterrent. Hopefully it is, and if it is, then we need to give kudos to the administration for getting that right. I would still be shocked if she doesnt make the move, but would be glad beyond belief if she stays.

Trust me, Mel Greenberg is interested.

thanks for the lead. i looked up his blog and he discussed it a few weeks ago..

still mostly speculation though. it's hard to say how much timelines are being pushed back with the virus spreading. otherwise we would probably know by now.

I guess Mel has maintained the Inquirer's editing standards since he retired.

Well we were all hoping it woudn't happen but Denise will be named the new head coach at Villanova.

Most likely, Amy Mallon will become the new coach of the Drexel.

Sad, but certainly no surprise.

Exactly what Timer said. Thanks for the memories Denise! Thanks for righting the ship at Drexel and setting the bar high. Best of luck at Nova

Amy Mallon WILL be the new head coach of the Dragons. Looking at the bright side, we know that the program is in very capable hands. Denise got the credit, but she didn't build a successful program alone. Mallon was the architect of the defense, but she may be able to do things with their struggling offense as well.

i keep getting reasons to like villanova. i don't know how i feel about this. hopefully she is successful because philly women's basketball would benefit from it. there's really no stand out program right now.

agree jb that i don't think it's the end of the world. maybe amy mallon has been itching to do some things that denise wouldn't necessarily let her do. i did notice at towson that a few of the assistants would get some alone time with the team in the huddle. it was neat to see them get that type of independence...kind of like when i let a med student go ahead in the room by themselves.

I like the hire as she was one of the main recruiters so everyone on the team trusts her/respects her. I don't think there will be much of a drop off.

Amy is the right decision if you want to maintain what we have and not go in a different direction. Best of luck to Amy. I think we all agree this was the right move and keeping going what Denise has built is a good thing.

RE: WBB Coaching Search for Villanova
it seems like we've been able to keep most of our staff together. i haven't been able to find anything about who denise hired.

at the end of all this...as much as we'll miss denise...it'll make for an interesting season to see how she does at nova and how amy mallon does things different. it doesn't seem like an ideal situation for either of them. nova hasn't been good in a while that i'm aware of and we're graduating an experienced senior class.

i do feel like we had reached a bit of a ceiling. denise made a comment about how much she learned to ratchet up the defense. could we have gone to far in that direction though?

We were definitely senior heavy this season. Amy will definitely have her work cut out for her. I am also interested to see what, if any, changes are made and how different Amy's approach is. I have no issues with the focus on defense. We went further with this approach than we had with a more offensive approach. One could say the same on the men's side too. Of course, I do think we can greatly improve on offense without giving up everything on defense so hopefully Amy can find what works.

Amy had her first interview yesterday with the CAA folks. A good listen.

did we really? we just weren't very aggressive about trying to score points. at times it felt like we were giving up the offensive end to just run the shot clock. i want to say it was related to our personnel...that we didn't think we had scorers especially against the bigger teams. we won that title because of marginean and we haven't had a player like that since.

The NCAA bid was definitely due to Gabby and Jasmina. That team was one of the last offensively potent teams (even with the heavy reliance of Gabby needing to do most). But the team that won the WNIT was defense first, so yes to me competing at the top every year and winning the WNIT on the back of defense constitutes more success than 1 NCAA appearance where we were never competitive. It would have been interesting to see if this years team would have cut down the nets (I think most of us doubt we would have beaten JMU). We won more regular season titles with defense than we did with offense too, despite our one tournament run and NCAA appearance.

On the men's side, I think it is clear we had more success with a defense heavy approach (Bruiser) than we have with a more offensive approach (under Spiker)

ultimately you have to be good on both ends...obviously. i think the women's program can always figure out enough offense to go with the defense. they've broken through with terrific offense when they've been really good. that wnit had mershon who i would argue was more rounded offensively then greenberg. wootton was a consistent post player and johnson-allen reminds me of washington now that i think about it.
