Ran across this on YouTube. Pretty cool documentary in case you have never seen it. I remember watching that first game against Nebraska on television. The entire city was all buzzed about the season even before it started.

When you start watching it it is hard to stop watching.

I don't think it was this video but maybe the 35 year one where Steve Mitchell said he owed everything to Coach Bartow.

Just watched the video in it’s entirety. I am so fired up for some basketball.

Think I watched this at halftime or before one of the games, way back when.

I didn’t know there was a 35 year video...

This was played before every football and basketball game in the 09-10 season. Gave me chills everytime.

It may have been 30 years instead of 35.

As weird as it may sound, UAB Basketball hit its plateau in year four of existence and it has been on a decline since. There have of course been some successes along the way over the last 27 years but not to the height of what took place in 1982.

Watched the video last night and you really did kind of get that vibe. How cool it must have been to be around back in those days. Elite Eight in only 4 years.

It was really cool. And the only coach that brought a similar level of excitement to Birmingham like Gene did was Mike Anderson. But the marquee teams that UAB beat in the early days with Gene were head and shoulders above what Anderson did.

The Sun Belt conference back in the day was quite competitive. Had several teams that were very high quality.
Great Midwest & CUSA also had some pretty good teams a while back.

I'm gonna walk back that last sentence. CUSA 1.0 was probably as tough of a basketball conference than any of those earlier Sun Belt or Great Midwest conferences UAB played in. UAB beat some pretty good teams under Mike A. to include beating an 8th ranked Maquette team with Dwayne Wade.

We need all these guys around even OM when hes out could be therapy for him.
