I did not attend games until 1977

The reason that game was so special, is because it was our only MAC win that year. In fact, our overall record was 2-9, with the other win over Arkansas State. It was a similar game to Central, with us coming from behind for the win.

November 14, 1987. Rynearson Stadium. We beat Bowling Green to win what at the time was thought to be IMPOSSIBLE--the MAC Championship! Over 20,000 in attendance, tailgating where the Convo now stands, the place was absolutely packed. My brother and I had to sit in the visitor stands because there was no room to sit anywhere else and we destroyed a pretty good BG team to earn a trip to the California Bowl and after the game, fans stormed the field and the goalpost came down. Pretty amazing spectacle for a 20 year old college kid.

Bob, that's why I chose glory days as my nickname! I was a college student in the late 80's, early 90's! E Michigan sports might never be the same! We were very good at football, basketball, swimming & diving, track and field, cross country, etc...….Actually we were dominant in some of those! I remember well when Rynearson stadium, and Bowen fieldhouse were jammed packed with fans!!!!!! It has been so long, football it has been 33 years since we won the MAC, and basketball 22 years, and counting!!!!!!

We are about the same age. We also had a great baseball program too with Oestrike and then Coryell. What a great time! I feel sorry for those who only know EMU sports mediocrity and never had a chance to experience those glory days of EMU sports. I still think EMU is a sleeping MAC giant and can get back to being really good again.

I was attending Eastern's games from 1967 on as an alum. It was very exciting having Dan Boisture as the coach and Frosty Ferzacca as athletic director. Eastern was giving scholarships for the first time in a decade, and winning football games.
Most of us did not know where some of the schools we were playing were located, but we were winning and that was what was important. McNeese State, Murray State, Northeastern, Waynesburg, were just a few in that category.
President Sponberg said, "I want the band to be proud when they were playing at half time". Those were exciting times.

Hi Ken — YES! Those were exciting times too, so I’ve heard. I’ve read up on the Boisture era as much as I can. He sounded like a hell of a coach.

It’s too bad he didn’t return to EMU at some point to coach after the Detroit Wheels experiment. He was too good of a coach to have such a short career. Nonetheless, his impact was significant.

For us at or near a half a century, we didn't realize how lucky we were! MAC championships in basically every sport, sweet 16 in 1991! CFL, NFL, and NBA talent during are era/time! It was great to be A HURON!!!!!!!

I know there is film footage of the era. The problem is that it literally was film, 16mm in fact. I don't know if any of the films from that era were kept, or transferred to DVD form. I certainly would hope that they were converted to DVD, but you never know whether
something like that was considered.
They played nine game seasons and got up to ten, by the time Boisture left in 1973, so that would be a lot of games to consider.

As my nickname states, the glory days of EMU sports! Late 80's, early 90's is 7 of those games! None of us realized how lucky we were to be students then!

What I am about to mention were not victories, but I think important to understand the direction that Athletic Director Frosty Ferzacca and President Sponberg wanted to take the football program in the late sixties to the mid-seventies.
It was the scheduling of the University of Tampa. They were an up and coming football powerhouse and Eastern played them in 1968, 1969, and I believe 1972. Eastern lost every game in that short series, but it was the 1969 game that was the most important. That game was played at Rynearson, and was the dedication game for its opening that season. Rynearson itself only held 12,500 fans, and there were some temporary bleachers set up on the other side of the field, but a record for attendance was set at the time, for about 17,000 fans.
We lost, as already mentioned, but it was a close game, with Eastern behind 10-7 going into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately Tampa scored another touchdown, and the game ended 17-7. That game showed everyone that we could compete with the best, and I believe was one of the reasons Eastern was looked at as a future member of the MAC.
