ESPN: C-USA West Offseason Preview
https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...e-usa-west

Quote:C-USA remains a conference with recruiting potential and on-field inconsistency. In terms of average SP+ ratings, it has often graded out lower than the Sun Belt, a.k.a. the conference from which it poached many of the above teams. The West division has its share of upside -- North Texas, Louisiana Tech, and UAB have all enjoyed historically successful campaigns in recent years -- but it heads into 2020 with quite a few starting QBs to replace and, in UAB, a three-peat favorite.

Quote:UAB
Head coach: Bill Clark (34-19, fifth season)
2019 record: 9-5 (6-2), 67th in SP+
2020 projection: 9-3 (6-2), 68th in SP+

RE: ESPN: C-USA West Offseason Preview
Normally, about 90% of the early September starting line up is based upon the depth chart at the end of spring practice. This peculiar year will find UAB having to go into the fall with only the fall practice - if that is still possible. Only the Ivy League has experience with this kind of condition since (last I heard) they have never had (formal) spring practice. UAB fans can only be somewhat thankful that this did not happen last year after our huge senior losses from the season before. As it appears now, the Blazers will be very comfortable with the present lineup going into the fall.

That and having about 2 weeks of Spring practice done before everything was shut down...

NCAA should allow some sort of Mini-Camp prior to fall camp beginning. Before July.

We usually start fall camp within July 28th-August 3.

We should be the favorite to win the West for the third straight year. I fully expect a 10-2 or 9-3 type season.

Not sure why. USM is losing a lot from their 2019 team. Many of their fans considers 2020 to be a rebuild year.

We struggle versus decent QBs

We struggle versus decent QBs

And half decent defenses. Not to mention we are going forward with the same offense and play caller.

It all depends on the OL. Without drastic improvement there nothing else matters

Well, we haven't been the favorite to win the west the last 2 years so this year would actually be the first.

Considering how every publications predictions have been the last few years I wouldn't put much stock into their opinions.

I'm still pretty concerned about our offense. I hope the guy from Arkansas was brought in to work with Vincent on bringing our playbook into the 21st century, or we could be in for another frustrating season.

And yes, I know the last 2 years aren't what most people would qualify as "frustrating" but I personally feel like I'm ready to not only beat up on our less fortunate conference mates, but also the teams that we are getting paychecks from. I'd rather be a cellar dweller in the AAC than a world beater in Sun Belt Lite, because cellar dwellers get just as much TV money, and have a chance to stop dwelling in the cellar.

The problem with the offense is the line not the play calling

I respectfully disagree. Though I'll concede our offensive line was definitely lackluster last year, our playcalling certainly didn't help. Our rushing plan was way too predictable and repetitive, and our passing plan was also super predictable and depended too much on routes that took a long time to develop.

If we run the offense we ran from the LA Tech game to the end of the season, we will experience a massive drop off in skill player talent. Yes, I know we won those games, but that was by virtue of having a great defense.

We need a facelift, badly

Bingo

Coach said the line was a problem all season long because the line was injured since spring.

we couldn't run the ball because of the line. our opponents knew that

If the oline is boo boo this season while being healthy, what’s the excuse then? I know OCs always use the, “Its not my play calling, but their execution” excuse.

The thing to remember about our offense is that it's designed to be run first. In 2018 we could go on those 8 minute 3rd quarter soul killing drives. By the beginning of the 4th quarter opposing defenses were just gassed. You could see in the first game against ASU in 2019 the Oline was going to struggle run blocking. I thought they actually did a good job pass blocking for the bulk of the year last year considering everyone knew they couldn't run.

We probably need a combination of the two things if we are being objective here. Nobody can sit here and say the o-line wasn’t an issue last year. Improvement in that area will help everything else.

That being said, our play calling is very predictable and vanilla. We need to adjust to the current century there. We will wind up having issues recruiting if we don’t modernize the offense somewhere along the way.
