Major CFB's Moral Obligation...
...if revenue lost is so great some schools and programs can't afford to keep going.

Here's something we discussed on my sports talk radio show...SEC ADs and commissioner Sankey have openly discussed the Coronavirus threat to 2020 college football. IF the entire season is threatened it's projected we could see a financial (all sports) loss of $20 billion, which could cause a large portion of individual sports programs and athletic departments to not be able to financially afford re-starting operations.

Why? Most football programs (and almost all non-football programs) are financially supported by state subsidies and student fees in addition to sponsorship dollars and fans' discretionary dollars. If states earmark that money elsewhere as part of recovery efforts, if student populations fall off, if advertisers have to keep their money in house, and fans can't afford to go/donate we're talking about a major major major MAJOR economic impact.

We know P5 conferences want to break away from the NCAA and the rest of college football as a whole, what is the moral obligation of P5 football to help re-start smaller college football? Of course, that's based off the current model of payouts which could be drastically affected (but revenue will likely return to P5 conferences first).

first, my answer is no obligation for individually schools to help re-start programs that dont receive huge TV money.

now, you bring up a great point in general. money is going to be beyond tight during the recovery phase. how much debt will the states allow schools to go into, for re starting programs, adding roster spots for spring sports, etc. i say debt because, the normal income streams just wont be there for a year or two.

This is an interesting conversation. In a time of already declining attendance, this may speed up that trend, even when things return to normal. The Louisiana schools were effected greatly by the last economic downturn, all of them, including LSU. It’s hard to think that schools that have recently, the last 10-20 years spent millions in on campus facilities not returning, but schools that are operating in older facilities, that are already in need of serious reinvestment, those schools could decide to mothball their programs for a few years for the economy to return.

Could see a major reshuffle just due to the amount of schools that decide to shutter and the ones that decide to proceed.

We are living in unprecedented times my friends, and I don’t care for it much.

Right. Could have a lot of UAB-ing going around across all levels of college football. We’ll see who REALLY wants to invest in football and who’s just been doing it because they felt like they had to. I could see anywhere between 2 and 6 programs go away per conference. Imagine the realignment threads

I'm going to out on a limb here and say (in the short run) fans will be so hungry for anything resembling a return to normalcy that the next FB season (if its this fall or next) should be well attended. I don't see a major drop-off in advertising $$$ for the upper crusties, and it isn't like there was a ton of cash being doled out to mid-majors or FCS schools anyway. I'm also not going to buy into the idea that discretionary cash will be any tighter than it has been in the past 2-3 years. People's 401-Ks may have taken a hit, but it isn't like folks will be funneling those discretionary dollars back into their long-term investments because there isn't any tax incentive to do so.

It is going to take some time for the economy to wind back up, but I think people will look at going to sporting events as more than just a reasonable facsimile to a more expensive vacation or other form of entertainment.

I think this accelerates the decline in attendance. People are losing the habit of attending and watching sports. Crowd avoidance may become an engrained cultural thing if we see Italy type

There will be an immediate surge of interest but I’m skeptical that lasts once the novelty is gone.

Looking at the other side, almost all althetic departments lose money. You may be able to conclude that a department may be better financially if the non revenue sports weren't played and the expenses saved. Football funds itself and some non revenue sports. If no games were played, some of the non revenue sports could be doubtful but football will survive. At worst, i suspect all sports would return in 3-5 years. I just can't see that we will not play this fall. The hot weather, availbility of drugs, medical care and good common sense should put the virus in our past.

I see posts as to what the P5's want but I'm not so sure about that. A division of P5/G5 schools may create some money for them but whatever the divisions, the G5 will continue to share in the money. P5 teams needs the G5 teams. With the possible exception of the very top teams, P5 teams needs us to beat up on and to inflate their records, save coaches jobs, and keep the donations coming in. A lot of P5's would be unhappy to have 7- 5 and 6-6 records which they would have if having to play similar or better strength teams in P5..
