Obama Went Golfing as H1N1 Swept Across USA-60 M Cases and 12K Dead!

Let's do a little flashback...

Quote:Back in 2009 when the Swine Flu – H1N1 influenza was sweeping across the country Obama went golfing.
Funny how the media never brings this up.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that that during the outbreak there were 60.8 million cases in the US, 274,000 hospitalizations, and 12,469 deaths.

There’s video of one reporter asking the White House press secretary about the optics of Obama golfing while Americans were dying.

Trump's been golfing 15 times since the closing of the Chinese borders is what I've read.

We'll be lucky if we're under 12,469 deaths in 2-3 weeks. Considering Italy is about 1/5 our population and is at half those deaths (6K), and from all indications we're about 2 weeks behind them - again, 12,469 deaths would be a success story in 2-3 weeks.

Quote:Though the 2009 flu pandemic primarily affected children and young and middle-aged adults, the impact of the (H1N1)pdm09 virus on the global population during the first year was less severe than that of previous pandemics. Estimates of pandemic influenza mortality ranged from 0.03 percent of the world’s population during the 1968 H3N2 pandemic to 1 percent to 3 percent of the world’s population during the 1918 H1N1 pandemic. It is estimated that 0.001 percent to 0.007 percent of the world’s population died of respiratory complications associated with (H1N1)pdm09 virus infection during the first 12 months the virus circulated.

CDC

Who would have guessed a pandemic with a ~1% mortality rate is taken much more seriously than a pandemic with a 0.001-0.007% mortality rate.

MATH IS HARD.

Quote:0.001 percent to 0.007 percent of the world’s population
So I will wait for you to figure out what percentage of the world's population has died from CoVid-19
Because you compared the world's population with the total number of infected.

It really is hard when you don't have a value for your denominator.

We'll be able to Monday morning quarterback Trump in about 2 years, just like we can Obama regarding H1N1. It is kind of remarkable to compare the press response during the illness, when the true scope is yet to be known.

By the way, the 0.001-0.007 is the % of world population that died. That is different and not comparable to a mortality rate of individuals who actually contracted a disease (unless your assertion is that 1% of the world population will die from Wuhan virus).

We shall see. Last year 80,000 people died from the flu in the US (highest in four decades). Who knew that? How many do you think of those "flu" illnesses were actually something that there was no test for like CoVid-19? I don't remember talk about not having enough ICU beds coming up last year.
80,000 flu deaths in US last year.
Quote:Last year, more than 80,000 people died of the flu and its complications in the United States, the highest death toll for the disease in at least four decades.

My point was that it appears that Covid-19 has a much higher mortality rate than the 2009 H1N1 outbreak. That's part of the reason why Obama got less criticism for his inaction when compared with Trump.

At the beginning of swine flu the death rate was 10% due to there being not enough tests for it. When it is all said and done, it will be found that 10s of millions of people test positive for CoVid-19 or maybe not, because there are a lot of tests coming back positive in which people are asymptomatic. We are literally testing "important people" for this. This has never happened in the history of epidemiology.

Why do we keep doing this?

We all know Covid =/= Swine... but we're clearly doing a WHOLE LOT more for Covid than we did for Swine... so any comparisons having to do with 'Trump's failures' are clearly about what these same people would have said 3 years ago.

We have no idea ultimately what damage Covid will ultimately do... but to deny that we're doing vastly more now is stupid.... and guess what? H1N1 wasn't new. It was called the Spanish flu the first time it came around and killed around 675,000 in the US, +/- 50mm worldwide which was a good percentage of the population in 1918

So Obama's administration had the benefit of 100 years of experience with the virus and still, 60mm people were infected, (and unlike Covid, most all were symptomatic) 275,000 hospitalized and 12k died.

Not exactly a 'home run'.

You know what Ps'es me off? When I'm watching Fox News and they have a side screen with the number of cases in the world of who have contracted the Chi-flu. Why are they doing this? They are like the rest of the MSM that want to create panic. Those idiots in charge don't know that a lot of people that are afraid to even look out of their windows because of the Chi-flu just get more afraid. Stupid people in the media should all be in quarantine and away from their jobs, they create more shiate than the Chi-flu.

Yeah, working today. Took a while to post. You guys had an entire conversation while I was composing. Saw it after I posted but other stuff I wanted to express so I left it as is.

Most on here wouldn't admit it so kudos to you.

We honestly won't ever know the true mortality rate of Covid - 19. We will have an estimate, just like we have for swine flu. What it appears to be is pretty meaningless at this point and in the grand scheme of things.

Decisions have been made based on the best estimates. Let's hope these decisions are extremely overblown. If they are overblown (or underestimated for that matter), let's hope we realize it as quickly as possible and adjust.

And our general population is now more than a decade older than it was under zerO.

Those then in their 60’s are now 70’s. 70’s? Now 80’s. That’s how it goes if you live that long. I know, we lost 2 last year alone. Got one grandpa for my kids hanging on.

This Chinese flu certainly doesn’t help, but facts is facts. The boomers are aging. Largest generation ever to that time, so Duh! Largest to leave us also over time.

Taint higher math like things sich as MUH EXPONENTIAL CURVE!!!

Just math.
