Good stuff ROB. They come across as very down to earth young men who love playing hoops. They were coached by their dad at Rochester Mayo High School so they should have high basketball IQ. Great to hear they both shot about 90% from the charity stripe this year.

I agree. Seems like an eternity since we had players shoot 90 % ft's. I am sure it will drop off some in college. Looking forward to watching them if the nation doesn't go into complete panic over the virus and shut everything down for 5 years.

Yep. You have to go back to the Steve Logan era. He shot 86% from the charity stripe. Just about Mr. Automatic. That's what made him so dangerous late in the game. He could hit the trey or get to the FT line. No worries. The world economy won't be able to be shut down for that long. IMO, it will be another month or so before things start getting back to normal.

Great interview. Both kids are set to be first class student-athletes for however long they're in Clifton. I would've liked to hear them talk what positions they'll play at the next level.

Is Mason a straight 2 or can he play the 1 as well?

Gabe said he's a good rebounder but is he strong enough to give us minutes at the 3 next year?

both of them seem to have borderline legit inside capabilities. i dunno what the talent's like up there, it's probably under the radar. minneapolis, imo, seems to get stronger. big ups to the north woods. just want until second generation somalian fugees enter the aau circuit. i can't name a somali basketball player but maybe it's something to look to

Good stuff ROB. They come across as very down to earth young men who love playing hoops. They were coached by their dad at Rochester Mayo High School so they should have high basketball IQ. Great to hear they both shot about 90% from the charity stripe this year.

Their on-court demeanor is a tad different, but I love their confidence. Their school had links to watch their games. The game that I watched Mason was ejected for two T's and Gabe picked up another one. They talk trash nonstop! Even after Gabe got his first T he was still constantly barking at the refs to call fouls. They are going to drive opposing fans crazy and it's going to be fun to watch!

Mason's athleticism was very surprising after reading about him initially like he was just a step up from a walk-on. He's got videos dunking between his legs and he's a very willing defender.

If we don't land a grad transfer that can really shoot well form 3, then I think the Madsen's progression becomes one of the biggest keys for next year.

So are you saying that they might be the Cats' version of JP Macura?

I think people assume they have a bunch of 5’10 white stiffs in MN, but they have a decent number of kids who go on to play D1 ball. I came across this list from a couple years ago... quite a few kids playing at this level.

Some on here fussed over the years about Mick not recruiting "farm-bred" spot up shooters and guys that can consistently make free throws as opposed to athletic guys that can board and defend. Well.....

I don't care where they come from. I just want guys who fit Brannen's system and yeah, it would be a bonus if they can hit free throws.

You and me both. Truth is we probably need both kind of guys. I mean Kyle Washington played high school ball in Minnesota (granted he went to New Hampshire his senior year to play Prep Ball).

I'll second that. Teams that have made deep runs in recent years have been a "best of both" in many cases. Jay Wright seems to strike the right balance at Villanova as an example of that.

RE: Brett Stein interviews the Madsens
Yeah, even though our class isn't highly rated by the recruiting services, I'm excited to see what these players bring to the table. I really like what I've seen from the highlights from all 4, but especially Eason and Gabe. Eason looks like he could make a freshman year Gary Clark type impact in his first season. Gabe just looks silky smooth, with his size coupled with his shooting ability I could see him averaging like 6ppg off the bench in his freshman season as well depending on how Harvey develops.

Right now I think our projected starting line-up is going to be...

1. MAW
2. Harvey (probably Jalen Tate if he transfers)
3. Williams
4. Eason/Diarra
5. Vogt

Pretty good but our depth, especially in the frontcourt is really low...hope to add some more depth in the offseason. Luckily the AAC isn't exactly full of bruising frontcourt players that can score. Guards are going to have to pick up the rebounding slack a la Houston to get us into the tournament.

Mason has nice handles. I think he'll give us a 3rd option at PG if necessary. You can never have too many ball handlers.

I thought it was interesting that Mason emphasized defense as his strong suit and that he defended the other teams best player two years straight. Combine that with Gabe saying defense is something he needs to work on and it makes me wonder if Mason will get more minutes initially. If Mason can be a three-and-D guy, there are minutes to be earned next season.

I'm still thinking given our recent offers that the plan is small ball. Diarra starting at the 5 and Vogt/Eason backing him up depending on the other teams size. You can take out other teams bigs by spreading the floor and forcing them to guard the perimeter (as we saw happen often to Vogt last year). Diarra/Eason at the 5 and an undersized PF would be hard for less mobile bigs to defend. Vogt would be the change of pace guy.

In recent years, we've seen Butler and Villanova run that guard heavy lineup with great success. Whether it's a primary or secondary strategy for Brannen I'm guessing we'll see it more next year.
