Conversely, and this has nothing to do with Byington or JMU, but we haven't had any players leave for the portal yet to my knowledge? Am I correct there? If so, that's a great sign. Knock on some wood...

Siddle has some respect and credibilty with everyone at UNCW as a former assistant coach here. Hard for the players to ignore the move from last place to a tie for first place the next year and then two NCAA appearances under Keatts/Siddle. Where else would they go to get a better upside than that? OTH, JMU didn't bring on a coach with any credibility to the current players. No real change in style that might excite them about the future. I actually think they'd have kept everyone if Mike Jones was bringing the press.

I saw a rumor that Mike Jones turned the job down. Which is surprising if true

Couldn't possibly be true. You must mean John Thompson III. A lowly coach like Jones would never turn down the job at JMU.

for a few guys, several places, but glad they have not chosen to do so. Also, as much as i like the optimism, Siddle isn't KK. We can hope he becomes him, but he's not him. Not nearly the track record or experience coming in.

Could be really good though. Does UNCW win back to back CAA titles without Flemings just showing up to add to the rest of the mix? We will never know. I like the Hawks chances over time in this case.

Not what I said and not the point. He carries CREDIBILITY at UNCW that Byington doesn't at JMU. He was a part of one of the best three years in the histroy of UNCW basketball and it all happened while these guys were heading into HS and watched every bit of it.

So Byington who turned around Southern as a HEAD COACH had less credibility than someone who was an ASSISTANT on good teams at UNCW(and average at best at State)? Interesting take, not sure i agree. Most on this board threw out him early as a candidate we'd have been happy with at UNCW. Can't we just say both teams made what appears to be solid hires? Ultimately we won't know until we see some results.

I've clearly stated Byington is a solid hire. We are talking about TRANSFERS. Siddle is directly connected to UNCW. Byington is NOT directly connected to JMU. What he did at GSU may or may not translate to wins at JMU in the CAA. What Keatts did at UNCW was PROVEN to be successful at UNCW in the CAA.

Furthermore, as I stated as well, Siddle brings a style of play that is highly desireable to the players we recruit. They've seen it at VCU, WVU, Louisville and now NCSU. They know exaclty what they are staying for. Byington isn't bringing a "system" the players can easily understand and embrace that they've seen before.

This isn't a Siddle good/Byington bad discussion. It's a discussion about why JMU players are leaving and UNCW players haven't left so far. It's all opinion and this is why I THINK there are different reactions at each school by the players.

RE: Mark Byington hired by JMU
Byington Comes From Strong Coaching Tree

But Byington saved his best compliment for Brad Brownell, the head Clemson coach since 2010.

“Probably the best basketball mind I have been around,” Byington said this past weekend.

So flashback to 1994 when Byington and Brownell both found themselves on the campus of UNC Wilmington.

“He was a bright guy. That was evident from the start,” Brownell, 51, told me Monday. “His freshman year, I was his academic advisor.”

Brownell, who grew up in hoop-crazy Indiana, arrived in Wilmington after being an assistant at the University of Evansville while Byington began his freshman season after turning down chances to play at several Virginia schools.

They put down roots in the hometown of Michael Jordan to be part of the first UNC Wilmington team under Wainwright, who got the head job at the Colonial Athletic Association school after being an assistant at Wake Forest. “I was looking to play a certain style,” Wainwright said Monday of hiring Brownell. “I was looking for someone with a motion offense background.”

Byington would go to Brownell’s apartment as a freshman to talk about his academic progress. The new JMU coach would summarize his classes in less than four minutes but they were required to talk for at least five.

“It is funny to think how far he has come, how far I have come,” Brownell said. “I am not surprised in the least the coaching career he has had and I am sure he will do well at JMU. Mark has done it the right way. He has worked his way up the business. We always keep in touch. Our teams scrimmaged this year” as Georgia Southern played at Clemson back in the fall.

Never saw that rumor on Mike Jones. A handful of folks wanted him, but the majority did not.

A good number of posters on our board wanted the admin to spend close to
a million dollars on the hire. That was the hill they wanted to die on.

More have come out recently liking the Byington hire. Looks like he is bringing two of his staff from Georgia Southern and picked up an assistant from Mt. St Mary's and one from UMES (Calvin Baker ex mid 2000's W&M Tribe & UVA player). Both those assistants have ties in Virginia/DC/Maryland.

Georgia Southern fans let us know they really liked him and he turned a terrible program in to a top 4-5 Sun Belt team. One thought the admin didn't do enough to help him get over the hump and the school / fans are more in to football for that to have happened.

Most of us are fine with whoever wants to go can go. Give Coach B a clean slate. 2-16 CAA 0-1 CAAT.

Dwight Wilson is going to Ohio to play one year. Darius Banks and DeShon Parker haven't found new homes. At least Parker would have 2 years somewhere.

I think Byington's background will equal success at JMU (above what Matt Brady ever did).

It would be great to see UNCW and JMU raise their level of play again, which will only help make the CAA even more competitive.

Byington has landed his first new player. JMU fans already not excited, lol.

Our 1st recruit for our new basketball coach...
He's the 4th scoring option from the 247th ranked school in the country (9-20 last season).

He played 18 minutes against Byington last season in their 1st game (a hyperextended knee ended his season in early February).
Stats: 0 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 1 turnover.

Well, I'm excited...03-yawn

Big time! This must the "new-hire bump" that was mentioned on the UNCW recruiting thread.

They could have gotten the top rated kid that had potential of Zion Williamson, and JMU fans would have been ho hum on him and pointed out every flaw in his game while "wishing him the best at JMU". It is just who they are.

Come on now. One guy craps on the transfer kid, but we all get lumped in to wish him the best while pick at his carcass?

I do not know much about the transfer PG, but most of us are interested in how Coach B will fill out the roster.

For anyone who cares there was a story that the staff hires may be announced this week.

Depending on the topic that is not untrue. Leads to some interesting back and forth as well as established camps of thought on JMU or JMU athletics.
