Welcome to JMU Coach Byington!

After listening to his introduction he does not sound like a guy who is from Salem/Roanoke or Southwest Va. This is coming from someone who grew up in Roanoke.

Long story short, he took over a really bad program and made them respectable. He has not yet produced results which jump off the page like a conference regular season championship or conference tournament Championship. He does not have any NCAA or NIT bids to his name either.

Congrats on the hire! I went to high school with Mark (couple years younger than him) and remember watching him lead the Salem to a state title his senior year. I know he played at UNCW but didn’t really follow him until he was hired at GaSo. He took a traditionally bad program there and made them decent. All the Southern fans I talked to said they loved him there.

We have a new coach. Let's support him 100%. Get your season tickets and let's open the new arena with lots of energy. We have a great team coming back and we need to be there to cheer them on. Do not say anything negative about our new coach. Give him a chance. I hope all of our players will stay. Even though we did not win I loved watching them play. A new coach and the new arena will be a great opportunity and should be an exciting season for all.

Great to see the nice comments from GSU fans here. Seems like a classy guy.

Yea. Never heard of the guy. But seems to check out.

I’m in. Kinda like it was a bit off the grid hire.

Can he coach? I have NO idea. But I’m willing to go find out.

RE: MBB Coach Mark Byington
I’d say he hit all the notes there. Hoping.

Some games of note the last couple of years. I know most are losses but at least they were right there.

This past season lost to Auburn and Georgia by single digits. I know, losses. But UVA embarrassed us and they were not that good early.

They beat George Mason once. (They also beat Mason 3 years ago)

Last year the lost to Central Florida by 4 and Dayton by 4. Led both games late. Both on the road. Central Florida was really good last year(see Duke game and blowout of VCU) and Dayton is a tough place to play.

Saw a lot of GSU fans wishing him well and thanking him for his time there. That’s what jumped out to me that we’re getting a good guy. Reminded me of Houston. Man how refreshing would it be to have a men’s basketball coach get poached from JMU?

RE: MBB Coach Mark Byington
I like the hire, of course, I wasn't one that thought there was any legitimate shot at getting Pitino/JT3, nor did I want them. Per a colleague in the VT athletic department, Byington was in the list of names circulated around the athletic department (and perhaps contacted) about the VT opening last year (where he served as an assistant a few years ago).

It seems he reshaped the culture of GA Southern basketball and brought excitement to the campus (go dig up some YouTube videos of their game against Georgia State last year). GA SO was irrelevant for 20+ years before he arrived (sound familiar). I hope he does really well here and in a few years he's being plucked away to a P5 program.

Our job has one thing going for it and that's a new building. Sure, we have had success in the distant past, but someone is inheriting a group of players that won 9 games last year but with a fan base and administration that is expecting to win immediately. That is a tall task and I think it is going to take a young, motivated coach that has the energy to completely revamp the culture around our basketball program. Good hire in my book.

In Coach Byington’s video after he was hired he said he expects to win right away- no talk of rebuild. He talks about the success of the other JMU programs and what JMU hoops should achieve. I think he gets it.

Agree, he certainly said all the right things. Just like I felt from Cignetti’s introductory press conference, I really like that his expectations for JMU are where they are. Hopefully he can deliver on them.

I wouldn’t expect him to say anything else. Imagine if he said something like “I’m happy to be here and even though we have a brand new arena, come back in a few years when we’re relevant”.

RE: MBB Coach Mark Byington
There have been plenty of hires in plenty of places where the coach tells the fans it’s not gonna be an instant turnaround but they’re gonna do it the right way so you need to be patient. The expectation of “going to the tournament every few years” definitely isn’t a given for a program that’s been there once in the past 25 years. But that’s the expectation he has and that’s good to see.

I'd be interested if coach pulls out the stops to keep players on the roster.

Cautiously optimistic. JMU could hardly be worse than they were last year. If he clicks with the players, they should do a lot better.

RE: MBB Coach Mark Byington
I remember Byington when he played for UNCW, good smart player.

Prior to coaching GSU he was interim head coach at CoC when Crimins stepped down and did a good job. I was surprised they didn't give him the job at the end of the season.
