Rob Strickland had moments.

I think his hype was huge - JMU's first Blue Chip center, but his career was very average at best.

Career

PPG 5.3
RPG 5.3

His Senior year was the only season he started more than 18 games.

Doubt he was even one our top 25 front court players.

One armed Pat Mitchell had more rebounds and points per game for his career.

Lamont Boozer was 6’10” and a top 150 recruit. Never dominant but a solid front court guy for a couple of years- better than Strickland

I would second Boozer as probably our 2nd best 6'10" or taller player ever. In his last 2 years, he was good for 9.3 pts and 5.4 rebounds. He could play some defense (and actually hustled down court), something Bowles was loathe to do.

Granted Boozer was overmatched when Todd Maccaoulough and Washington came to the convo but he was a solid big. I’ll grant you a couple of others from that era. Mate Mlisa was 6’10” and could have been real good at JMU had he stayed. Also Lott was legit 6’8” 6’9” and a very solid player with good post moves who could even on occasion make an outside shot during his time at JMU.

It could be argued the Dan Ruland (though only 6'8") was the best center the Dukes have ever put on the court and was drafted in the third round by the Sixers. Though he didn't make the team. Played all four years as a Duke and part of the legendary teams that made the NCAA Tourney three years in a row. Plus he was an all around good dude.

RE: Hoops transfers forecast
dnr article in recent days about JMU recruiting a big for their one guaranteed open spot next season. Rules would be different for Paul Lewis or Nicks as I’m sure they would figure out more open spots if those guys were viable.

This promise of another big should make everyone happy. Sometimes a 6’8 or really skilled /explosive 6’7” is better than a limited 6’10”. It’s been said many times and over the years increasingly become the case with changes to the way basketball is played but size can be overrated. Think Flowers, Hood, etc of recent years.

Some fans would rather a conventional big or two and be ok with some real diminutive guys on the roster too. Others are kind of ok with the idea of interchangeable parts ball handlers shooters etc. with length between 6 and 6’8”. I think it’s a balance and I believe we not only have it on the current roster but that we will moving forward but I think back to those final Brady team first Rowe team with Paulus, Lukic, Vodo, and Dimitri all on the roster at the same time- 6’8” to 6’10” with bulk - good size but limited.

I think having sule will show us a bit what more depth in size will do for this team. I think its wise to save that for a big save for paul lewis or nickel. We will probably see another transfer or two after this season as well. So many good guards on this team...

Excited to travel up and watch this team!!

Good article on what Coach By sees in Ihenacho along with his (Ihenacho) outlook of the team and style of play.

Liking what I hear out of the team in this article per Mettlen

Agree. Really looking forward to the season and the new arena. I think we will be exciting and very good. Ihenacho seems like an unselfish stat stuffer. My only real concern is chemistry/playing time. The competition for playing time will be intense but that is what you want.

With things starting to get close to the start of school and MBB and WBB practice starting in a couple months I am curious how many of the players that are in the transfer portal are still looking for a home? Thought I saw something recently that about 500 or so men were still looking.

This is a bold statement to make without him seeing him play a single minute for the Dukes but ever since we got him I have thought he’s our Matt Lewis of the future. Freshman player of the year and has 4 years left combined with his size and speed.

Huh? Not sure how what I said could be thought of as a bold statement.

Ihenacho talking about what he sees in other players on the team is of interest to me. I made no predictions or statements about him or other players. I took it as Ihenacho sees a higher level of skill than what he was accustomed to at North Dakota & the Summit League. Therefore, I like how that could translate to the floor in Coach By's 2nd season.

If you haven't seen him play a single minute for the Dukes, I could say "wow that's a bold statement to think of him as our next Matt Lewis."

I was prefacing what I was about to say with “this may be a bold statement.” Not an attack on what you said (all you said was good article?). I said that I believe he will be our next Matt Lewis (which is a bold statement).

Not looking to argue just giving my perspective on what I’ve read for Ihenacho.

That is the thing with this wide open transfer portal.....be careful what you wish for b/c you just might get it. The number of spots is still the same.....and why would you want a mediocre player with 1 or 2 year left when you can just go get a fresh HS kid.

If you are a bench guy what makes you think you are gonna be attractive to another school, never really got that one.

As a longtime WBB fan, it’s always been easy to just ignore MBB. Happy to say my interest is piqued after last year’s success!
